Kiko Veneno was the leader of the seminal band Veneno that recorded the ground-breaking 1977 album “Veneno” (“Poison”), considered by many the all-time best Spanish album. They created a fresh mix of drums and spanish guitars, of Bob Dylan automatic poetry and Andalucia popular rhymes, of Frank Zappa’s free musical approach and flamenco roots. The band broke up after this only album, and while the guitarists of the band Raimundo and Rafael Amador reached high heights with a new band, Pata Negra, the career of Kiko Veneno went down during the eighties. In 1992 Kiko resurfaced with a brilliant album, “Échate un cantecito” (“Burst Out Some Singing”) recorded in London, played mainly by English musicians and produced by Jo Dworniak.
The gorgeous album closer was “En un Mercedes blanco” (“Driving a White Mercedes”), wrapping a theme as serious as the drug addiction with a sweet and danceable rumba rhythm and his usual (and typical of Andalucia) sense of humour. The lyrics are slightly cryptic but Kiko himself gave some clues to Spanish Rolling Stone: “Got the idea one day when I was with Raimundo (Amador) in Seville neighbourhood of 3.000 Housing (suburb of Seville mainly inhabited by gypsies). I saw a gypsy boy buying a half dollar of tinfoil for having some “chinos” (heroin joints). The lyrics talked about the impact that heroin made to gypsy world: it wreaked havoc among 90% of the families”. It’s about the 3.000 Housing of Seville but it could have been about every ghetto of every city, from the Bronx to the Paris “banlieues”. It doesn’t matter. You got the picture by now, don’t you?

That’s the idea, to create in some of you enough curiosity for hearing the song, even with an illegal download (or seeing the video in YouTube). In that way there isn't the excuse of “I don’t understand the lyrics”. It’s possible that you don’t like the song, but at least you’ve expanded your musical knowledge just a little more.
