Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

What a great list!

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

I agree. A great list that tries to avoid the obvious choices.

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

I certainly don't always agree with Blow Up. For example, I find their top 3 albums of 2006 (1. Joanna Newsom - Ys, 2. Liars - Drum's Not Dead, 3. Scott Walker - The Drift) very difficult to enjoy.

But this might be the most interesting list I've ever seen. I really like the ones I've heard and I'm eager to check out the rest!

Thanks!!

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

Glad that Decacdes was #2, such ana mazing song!

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

Blow Up always avoid obvious choices.
Sometimes their choice could appear too much unconventional, but it's certainly the best italian music magazine.

I'll post sooner other lists dealing with cover songs and italian songs

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

This list inspired me musically and creatively! Let's start a new thread. Our own top 100 "inspired by the Blow Up top 100"! Any takers?

The gems: (so far)

Robert Wyatt - Sea Song
Elliot Smith - Memory Lane
Richard Harris - Macarthur Park

Robert Wyatt - "Little Red Riding Hood Hit The Road".
Liquid Liquid has the coolest first 20 sec of a song...the sound that Syd Barret makes after 2.17 in "Feel" is...Syd?...Gil Scott-Heron! Phil Ochs - "Small Circle Of Friends" and Julie Andrews "My Favourite Things" is hard to erase once entered...Soap Shop Rock grows...

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

66. Townes Van Zandt – Pancho And Lefty

Worthy of much acclaim. Glad it got some.

Another Texas outlaw-folk gem worth checking out is "L.A. Freeway" by Guy Clark.

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

The gems so far)

Lou Christie (!) - Paint America Love

The whole album is great, and is IMO one of the few truly undiscovered lost classics out there. Who woulda thunk?

C.A. Quintet - Trip Thru Hell
Marlena Shaw - California Soul

Really glad you like these, too.

By chance I discovered Funkadelic - Promental...Enema Squad as well. Probably belongs...

There's TONS of great P-Funk. Very hard to pick just one...

Liquid Liquid has the coolest first 20 sec of a song...

I presume you've heard Grandmaster Flash's "White Lines"? If not, check it out...

Gil Scott-Heron!

YES!

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

OK, somethin' went crazy with the quotes in my post above ... hope you can parse through that.

Anyway, main point is everyone should check out Lou Christie and Gil Scott-Heron!

And fear not, Son. We had many common favourites and some songs I didn't find, in the record store :)

Skipped the jazz as well, but that's because I'm stupid, conservative and you name it.

Re: Blow Up - 100 songs to remember (December 2006)

I'm so VERY pleased you liked all those tracks. It really makes this insane process of listing stuff worthwhile. It also scares me a bit how much great, unsung music there is out there -- the canon could really use some freshening up from time to time!

Oh, and considering some of the things you like, you really should give jazz a shot. Donald Byrd is a jazz artist, and Gil Scott-Heron has a lot of jazz elements in his music. You should give Charles Mingus a try; almost everyone I know who likes adventurous rock loves Mingus.
