You could almost say we have a consensus regarding the albums, as no other album was close the top 10. But in the song list we had an extremely tight game between in particular a few Pearl Jam and Nirvana songs. In fact, Pearl Jam's "Black" and Nirvana's "Come As You Are" got the same score. I have decided that the 10th place goes to "Black" since Pearl Jam's "Alive" was closest behind on place 12 (although Nirvana's "In Bloom" ended up on place 13, only 2 points behind "Alive"!). I think it will be interesting to see where an outsider like "Black" will end up in the 90s poll.

Antonio Vega was the leader of Nacha Pop, one of the best bands of the “Movida Madrileña” (“Madrid Move”, the Madrid musical scene of the first eighties). But while Nacha Pop shared with other “movida” bands some external aspects (like a vital, fresh and colourful musical approach), at the core there was a reflexive, troubled, intimate and sometimes impenetrable songwriter. Moreover, the fragile health of the singer caused by long-time heroin addiction had received much more attention (an even a premature tribute album aptly called “this sad and lonely boy”) that his music itself. In fact I’ve got knocked by a last year TV appearance of a weary, aged, grey-haired (and toothless!!) Antonio Vega.
But, back in 1991, the first solo album of Antonio Vega “No me iré mañana” (“I Won’t Leave Tomorrow”) balanced between gorgeous pop songs and intimate ballads as “Se dejaba llevar por ti” (“She Let Herself Be Driven by You”) that, in the singer’s own words, “it’s about the feeling I get when nothing ties me”. But let’s hear Diego A Manrique, the pope of Spanish rock critics talking about Vega in 1992: “Antonio Vega was twenty-something when he shook us with “Chica de ayer” (“Yesterday Girl”). That song broke the consensus: we were enjoying the speedy youth of the New Wave and there came a spoilsport, remaining us that not everyone was invited to the party, that life include some dilemmas and agonies too. It was a strong challenge: the Everlasting Orgy had been declared and there came a man with the hangover songbook. A silent guy, of shy looks and heart on the sleeve. An aching heart where Antonio wet his fountain pen. A pen writing from the solitude, from this sublime clairvoyance when the pain provide the necessary words to move away the monster. Antonio Vega never travel the short cuts, never looked for pleasing the audiences. His lyrics contain a magnificent opacity, spirals of personal metaphors, chronics of twilight visions, sparkles of not transferable intuitions. Maybe that’s why the lyrics retain its magnetism along the years: they have the balsamic power of the intense living experience while they keep some clues and revelations for the obsessive listeners”. Well, Diego, it’s impossible to say it better.
