Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Interesting list. I'd put The College Dropout, The Score & Stankonia in the top 10

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

This list is ridiculous, no Nas, Quest, Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, Me Against the World, and 36 Chambers immediately come to mind

If you are new to hip hop please don't use this list

Stick to trashy techno UK, this might as well be a list of random albums

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

As much a hip hop and rap fan i am this list is sooooooooooooooooooooo bad.

I mean its just so bad

I dont understand why Jay Z scores so high, he's shit!

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

I’m a big rap fan and I don’t think the list is that bad. Loads of weird choices though, but that’s part of the fun I think. My all time favourite rap album Enter The Wu-Tang isn’t even on the list! But it’s a good thing that it doesn’t just list the same old pack of essentials.

The top ten is pretty cool, but Stakes Is High over the first or second De La Soul albums, and 2001 over The Chronic, sure are a curious choices.
Great to see Devin the Dude, Camp Lo, Masta Ace (maybe his worst album, but whatever…), Non Phixion, Edan and E-40. Personally though I would throw a bunch of stuff off the list (Wyclef Jean?! C’mon..), and I think many of the artists are represented by wrong albums.
A fun list all the same.

And btw Jay-Z isn’t shit, he is THE SHIT! Or at least he used to be... Check out Reasonable Doubt (1996) and see what I mean.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

some of you are right about who's missing, but vgrd is more right.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

As soon as I saw the heading I thought surely Nas - Illmatic will be #1 but to my shock it doesn't even look like it's on there.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

To address some of the earlier points brought up, I think Illmatic was '94, 36 Chambers was '93, the great Public Enemy albums were in the late 80s and and early 90s.

That said, where the hell is Dizzee Rascal (this is a British list, so c'mon) and Madvillain?

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Slush is of course right.
I got so exited seeing a rap list on acclaimed music that I didn't even see the fixed time period. That explains some of the odd choices. Still a lot of personal favorites missing though, Madvillainy and early Eminem has been mentioned, and I would definetly like to see El-p - Fantastic Damage on there.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Seriously, no Nas? Stillmatic should have been on it. The BluPrint is not even Jay's best album, its Reasonable Doubt. the silliest thing though is that lil flip got a spot and Nas, the best rapper that has ever been (yes, had he died like biggie or pac he would also have been a ledgend and hes got better lyrics then they do, hes just not a dead ledgend)didnt get one.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

The List is quite good. Still i would come up with

Mos Def: Black on both sides
Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli & DJ Hi-Tek): Train of Thought
Nas: Stillmatic
Pharcyde: Labcabincalifornia (maybe...)
and i agree with Common, there should be "One day it'll all make sense" in the top 100.

I would cut 5-6 albums that i do not know ;)

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

I completely agree. I really don't understand why Reflection Eternal doesn't get more love here, there and everywhere.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

David Banner top 20?

you are fucking sick in the head/ not worthy of ears

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

list is poor i mean no stillmatic for one also the blurprint and biggies albums should be higher

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

At least it's not the same tired list that every critic pulls out every now and then. It is missing key albums obviously but included a lot that deserve recognition but don't get it. A list like this is suited for a person acquainting themselves with hip-hop because it provides a huge range of styles rather than the 20 albums that everyone has heard before and even if you haven't, those lists usually have no range whatsoever other than throwing in a few old school sides.

What was their judging process? Did they poll a bunch of people or what?

By the way whoever said Jay-Z doesn't belong on the list is crazy.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

your list is good and pretty accurate but i don't think only built for cuban links is number 1. I think it has to be either Mobb Deep's The Infamous, Wu-Tang's 36 Chambers, or an Eminem CD. I Did Not See That much eminem on there.

P.S. The Wu-Tang Clan ain't Nothing To Fuck With that's why they should be up there at numero uno.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Poor list

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

The only thing I agree with here is the omission of Eminem.

He's the kind of guy who gets extra credit just for being both countercultural and popular at the same time. His image is completely manufactured and his rapping is above average at best.

Dr Dre said 'Hey, how can we get a bigger white audience?' One of his market strategists said 'How about we find a way to combine the street rapper image with the sentiment of 'Fight for your right to party?' It was a brilliant tactical move on Dr Dre's part, but the actual music is vastly overrated by people like Robert Christgau who think if it's not rap and it's not pre-1991, it's not relevant.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

No Cannibal Ox?
Are they straight trippin'?

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Why all the criticism? I like this list. Like John said, at least it's something different. I wonder how many albums on here people have actually heard. I'm a pretty big hip-hop fan and I've only heard about half the albums in the lower half of the list (#51-100). Anyway, how about some rival lists? Here's mine (obviously I disagree with BillAdama):

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Nobody can't forget Bone Thugs n Harmony cd's like E. 1999 Eternal, The Art of War, or BTNH Ressurection

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

mf doom operation doomsday needs to be #1. He is the greatest mc of all time.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

I think I'm just biased against rap that glorifies violence.

That's why I gravitate more toward stuff like Outkast and the 80's rap that comes off as a protest against black culture being marginalized, and away from stuff like Dr Dre, Eminem, Wu-Tang, etc.

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

This is a mediocre list. Not bad, but not very good either. I dig Edan making it. I'm glad ATliens is in the top 10.

But where is The Roots' Do You Want More?!!!??! (exclamations part of the title but they go with the question). Where is Eminem?? MF Doom??

::facepalm::

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Re: Hip-Hop Connection (UK) 100 greatest rap albums 1995-2005

Not enough hip-hop talk on this board, so I'm happy this list has caused discussion. Greg's list is certainly solid, if I were going to do a quick T20 for this time period it would look like this

1. OutKast - Aquemini
2. Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
3. Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
4. Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
5. Madvillain - Madvillainy
6. GZA - Liquid Swords
7. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
8. Mobb Deep - The Infamous
9. Kanye West - The College Dropout
10. Common - Like Water for Chocolate
11. Black Star - Talib Kweli and Mos Def are Black Star
12. Outkast - Stankonia
13. Kanye West - Late Registration
14. Jay Z - Reasonable Doubt
15. Big L - Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous
16. OutKast - ATLiens
17. The Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Forever
18. Nas - It Was Written
19. Dr. Dre - 2001
20. Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
