New update May 10, 2006

I am currently uploading all the pages for the new update. It should be completed within an hour I think.

For this and all future updates, I will present all the albums and songs that have entered (or re-entered) the Acclaimed Music lists. I will also present the albums and songs that have dropped out.

Most of the new albums and songs have entered AM because of the critics lists that have been added in this update. However, a few recordings were added now because my source database wasn't complete before. A few records might also have entered because of changed algorithms.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Awesome! Thanks for this! I like this new policy very much, even if I love many more albums that are exiting the ranks than are entering.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Thanks a lot for this lists of entry and drop-outs. It help a lot those who try to keep up with how the world's tastes are evolving. Really awesome. Congratulations!!!!

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Great update! You've added a LOT of those lists that were on the backburner. With each new update this site gets better and better.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Awesome! I'm glad to finally see ‘Don’t Know Why’ making the list, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see ‘Patches’ pop up on the list. I’m surprised to see ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’ make the list because it recently made the list of the worst songs of all time, but I am glad, because I thought I was the only one who actually liked the song. Very happy to see ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ on the list now, as well as two Keane songs. I’m also glad to see ‘If You Could Read My Mind,’ ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl,’ ‘Where Is the Love,’ ‘Killer Queen,’ and ‘Life’s Been Good’ now on the list.

I’m sad to see ‘To Love Somebody’ leave the list (it wasn’t too long ago that we had to say goodbye to ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ as well). I’m also sad that ‘Sunshine Superman,’ ‘Crocodile Rock,’ ‘Constant Craving,’ ‘Give Peace a Chance,’ ‘Take the Money and Run,’ ‘Pleasant Valley Sunday,’ ‘Time,’ ‘Another One Bites the Dust,’ ‘I Only Want to Be with You,’ ‘Streets of Philadelphia,’ ‘Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel,’ ‘Careless Whisper,’ ‘5:15,’ ‘Free Ride,’ and ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’ are no longer on the list.

Keep up the great work!

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Very much worth the wait, Henrik. Nice to see those two U.S.-only early Rolling Stones albums (12 x 5 and DECEMBER'S CHILDREN) finally added to the list - I'd been wondering if you would ever include them. Good to see LODGER finally take its place alongside the rest of Bowie's stellar '70s output as well. I can't wait until I have more time to fully absorb all the changes.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Great update, Henrik. I'm expecially glad to see an italian artist album in the AM list: Giorgio Moroder's "From Here to Eternity". I hope to find sooner Ennio Morricone.

Great Stuff, H...

kudos for the new update. I wouldn't have known it had I not come to theforum, as the main page on my computer still says the last update was Feb. 7, even after refreshing it.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Good update! Except, why did Definitely Maybe fall?? And Blur pass Oasis??

Re: New update May 10, 2006

I'll take this one more time...

To delete all old pages: Go to Tools / Internet Options / Delete Files

To delete a particular page: Hold the mouse over the frame with the page you want to delete, right-click the mouse and choose refresh.

Is It...

different for Netscape Navigator/ it doesn't thave that option to delete files (unless it's under something else). Odd, becasue it still lists "Constant Craving" on kd lang's page, yet it's not in the top 2,500 list. My cooky system!

Re: New update May 10, 2006

In utero up 16 places....

Not long to top 100!

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Shouldn't Jay-Z be credited with "Crazy In Love?"

And it's cool the Grammy winners are included now, but are you going to include Record/Album nominees now as well? They would be like top 5 of the year but unranked, no?

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Jess, your question about Jay-Z has been discussed in two other forum threads, but the people who have brought up the issue before have been pleased with my answer below.

"I don't think Jay-Z is credited for 'Crazy in Love' on the record's outer sleeve (there's probably a note somewhere though where he is mentioned). This is why I haven't given Jay-Z credit for 'Crazy in Love'."

The GRAMMY nominees could be added too, but I could only find the 2005 nominees at grammy.com, do you have more info?

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Thus proving that the GRAMMYs are pure pish.

LOL...

It's true that *most* of what ends up as nominees in the major categories (in the overall history of the NARAS) aren't among the most aclaimed of a given year or anything. But, every now and again, truly acclaimed worls sneak in. It's mostly been about safe, non-threatening mainstream nominees. Getting a little better, but there's too much history to make up for!

Are critics members of NARAS?

Re: New update May 10, 2006

The Grammy Awards have always failed to represent any major musical movement or evolution...for 40 odd years it has been entirely unrepresentative of the music scene. I mean awarding Bob Dylan a heap of awards as an afterthought in 1998....what the hell!

They got it right only once - 1984 when Michael Jackson took home 8 awards!

Re: New update May 10, 2006

The Grammys are voted on by actual producers, musicians, etc. Why would you expect them to line up with critics? Just because critics like a work doesn't automatically make it the best.

Let's Be Serious...

lookat some of the nominees/winners in some of the major categories over the years. There's no way some of them hold a candle next to some of the best works of a given year.

Problem is, many of the best are not big household names, so at times the nominees have been the big hits of a year, from those safe acts. In some cases, some of those actually were artistically relevant, but many times other, they haven't been.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

you are defining best by critics or your own thoughts, though. obviously a lot of the grammy voters disagreed, which is their right to do. there is no actual 'best' because quality is subjective. to ridicule the grammys because they don't align with your opinion or with some critics is pretty arrogant.

Maybe So...

but it doesn't make it any less a strong viewpoint.

There's a reson the organization has developed the reputation it has- Shammys, Grannies, etc. It's not for nothin'.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

actually, it does make it a viewpoint with less strength. you are trying to force critics' opinions onto people who vote for the grammys even though they are separate bodies. and who started calling them the grannies? critics, even though the grammys aren't about the critics.

and while some choices lean older (like Natalie Cole and Tony Bennett), most of those were in the early 90s. over the years they have rewarded critical faves like stevie wonder, u2, coldplay, outkast, paul simon, and so on. you can find a lot of grammy winners on AM, so i don't know what the big deal is.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

A lot of normal people call them grannies as well.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

One question: Why aren't "12x5" and "December's Children" listed together with their English counterparts, which is the case otherwise when an album has a different title and a slightly different tracklisting in UK/US?

Re: New update May 10, 2006

12 x 5 and DECEMBER'S CHILDREN don't really have U.K. counterparts (although the former does contain all the tracks from the British 5 x 5 EP), which is wny Henrik hadn't included them until now; they're basically hodgepodges of singles and leftover tracks from the first three British albums that weren't included on the U.S. versions. It's a testament to the consistency of the pre-AFTERMATH Stones recordings that they play as coherent, cohesive albums nonetheless -- which is not, I don't think, something that can be said of similar Capitol Beatles collections like YESTERDAY ... AND TODAY or HEY JUDE.

Re: New update May 10, 2006

Grannies may be "different" from the taste of most critics, but given that they are selected by musicians and music biz people I would say they are picked by some kind of "experts", and as such it would be fair if Henrik found a way to include Grammy winners.

Obviously, just a Grammy without any critical acclaim wouldn't be enough to enter the top 2500 anyway.
