Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

This is a preliminary list based solely on metacritic's metascore and number of reviews. That is, Arctic Monkey's popsition in NME's list of the best British albums of all time has not been taken into account.

1. Cat Power - The Greatest
2. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
3. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever They Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
4. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
5. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
6. Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas
7. Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers
8. Mogwai - Mr. Beast
9. Jenny Lewis - Rabbit Fur Coat
10. Roseanne Cash - Black Cadillac

I don't think all these 10 would go into Acclaimed Music all-time 2500.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Thanks, that was quick!

Obviously, Arctic Monkeys would move up to #1 if that absurd NME fifth-best-British-album-of-ALL-TIME rank was included. (Incidentally, while the album certainly isn't THAT good, it is pretty damn good, and at least worthy of its high 2006 ranking - think Mike Skinner fronting Sleater-Kinney doing a Buzzcocks tribute record and you'll have an idea of what it sounds like.)

Glad to see the Belle & Sebastian record up so high. I've really liked what I've heard from it.

3121

I think Prince's new album is going to get quite the good acclaim. We'll have to see!

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

What about Goldfrapp. That's all I'm hearing about nowadays.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

That record came out in 2005 in Europe.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

After one more week into 2006, the top 10 looks almost the same. In parenthesis the current positions at RYM.

1 (8). Cat Power - The Greatest
2 (2). Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
3 (7). Arctic Monkeys - Whatever They Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
4 (3). Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
5 (34). Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
6 (41). Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers
7 (25). Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas
8 (19). Jenny Lewis - Rabbit Fur Coat
9 (10). Mogwai - Mr. Beast
10 (12). Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac

Quite similar figures for the critics and the RYM users. But while the critics are more in love with the girls, the RYM users are still busy with the prog/metal stuff.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Until the next site update I will continue to give you this little weekly feature. However, this is another week without any new entries.

Updated RYM positions within brackets.

1 (10). Cat Power - The Greatest
2 (3). Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
3 (2). Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
4 (14). Arctic Monkeys - Whatever They Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
5 (9). Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
6 (57). Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers
7 (22). Jenny Lewis - Rabbit Fur Coat
8 (33). Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas
9 (28). Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac
10 (11). Mogwai - Mr. Beast

The next site update will be sometime in April.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Thanks for these continued mini-updates, Henrik. This may be a more specific question than you're able to answer, but: if you were to post a site update right now, what would be the approximate breakdown of these 2006 albums in terms of where they would rank on the all-time list, i.e., #'s such-and-such would be in the top 500, top 1000, etc. Just curious.

It'll be interesting to see whether DESTROYER'S RUBIES keeps up this level of acclaim through the end of the year, which would result in it being ranked higher than any of Bejar's work with the New Pornographers. Somehow I tend to doubt it; it may end up more along the lines of Low's THE GREAT DESTROYER, which ranked highly in the early going last year but has now disappeared completely.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

So far this list is better than anything that came out in 05. There are so great looking artists on this list as well. I may end up being the most attractive list of all time.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I think 2006 has been extremely poor so far. Arctic Monkeys they are terribly average, and they're sitting in 4th.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

The Artic Monkeys are a great band. All 05 had to offer was Block Party who reeked. The Artic's are overhyped but for a group of teenagers they're fantastic. Belle and Sebastian are at the top of their game and Izzy Campbelle seems to be coming out with great material as always. The Gossip are plagued as being underdogs because of the lead singer's gurth but they're one of the many bands that are bringing women back to the spotlight where they belong. 06 is turning out to be one of the best years that this decade has to offer.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Sorry but the Arctics dont do it for me at all. Better than Bloc Party maybe but that isnt saying much. I'd like to hear something fresher than this.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I've heard this before with the Stroke, White Stripes, Interpol, YYYs, the Libertines, Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand. The list goes on and on. Whenever there's hype there's ALWAYS haters.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

An extended list and some more changes this week.

1. Cat Power - The Greatest
2. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever They Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
3. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
4. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
5. Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
6. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
7. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
8. Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers
9. Jenny Lewis - Rabbit Fur Coat
10. Mogwai - Mr. Beast
11. Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas
12. The Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics
13. Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac
14. Donald Fagen - Morph the Cat
15. Morrissey - Ringleader of the Tormentors

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Terrible year so far...

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

It's good to be positive isn't it Bullfinch

Band of Horses, Johnny Boy, Liars, Sunset Rubdown, Graham Coxon and Raconteurs are all worth checking out from this year.

Plenty of big artists coming back and a pile of interesting debuts on the way too.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

None of the ones you mention are on the list...

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I actually think this year has been a little better than last year so far. I really like the Belle and Sebastian, Ghostface Killah and Cat Power CDs.

After giving a few preliminary listens to the upcoming Built to Spill, Pretty Girls Dig Graves and Drive-By Truckers albums, I can say that they all have potential but will require more listens. I'm a little disappointed by the new Flaming Lips album, however. But it could grow on me.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

That's because they haven't been reviewed enough to get on Metacritic or in some cases All Music as well. They will all feature on top 50's come EOY.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I still have a lot of work to do before the next site update and in the meantime you will have to live with these mini-updates of the 2006 list...

This list is still only based on the metacritic data (metascore and number of sources). In addition, Arctic Monkeys has been listed both by NME (All-Time top 100) and Mojo (top 100 of 1993-2006), so it's definitely the most acclaimed album of 2006, but I can't say yet what the all-time place would be at AM.

1. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever They Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
2. Cat Power - The Greatest
3. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
4. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
5. Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
6. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
7. Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers
8. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
9. Mogwai - Mr. Beast
10. The Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics
11. Built to Spill - You in Reverse
12. Jenny Lewis - Rabbit Fur Coat
13. Morrissey - Ringleader of the Tormentors
14. Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas
15. Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac
16. Donald Fagen - Morph the Cat
17. Howe Gelb - 'Sno Angel Like You
18. T.I. - King
19. Kelley Stoltz - Below the Branches
20. Graham Coxon - Love Travels at Illegal Speeds

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Does that Mojo list count? It was voted for by readers as well.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Thanks so much for these mini-updates, Henrik! All we have to do is sit and wait while you do all the work. Please know that it is very much appreciated!

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

No!!! How can the Arctic Monkeys be top???

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I think Mark and Izzy will top critics list with the whole Johnny June Carten Cash trend going on. I love Izzy! She's criminally underrated. I hope Artic Monkeys make the top 10 of the 00s. At least its not all sappy like all the british stuff that was coming out in the early 00s. I don't like this new text box. Sometimes my computer has a few bugs and the text doesn't even show up. Please consider getting rid of the text.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Bullfinch, this is now the third or fourth time you've said exactly the same thing. You don't like the Arctic Monkeys. WE GET IT ALREADY.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Since Arctic Monkeys feature in the NME and Mojo lists, it is more or less clear that the album is going to be no 1 of the of the acclaimed albums of 2006 when the lists are collected early next year, isn't it Henrik? (If not something totally unpredictable happens of course).

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

It all depends on the end-of-year lists, but I think we can be pretty sure to see Arctic Monkeys in most of these lists.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

The Arctic Monkeys album is in pretty much the same position as ELEPHANT was in 2003, when the NME placed it on their latest top 100 of all time list before it was even released! With that much advance hype going for it, it was inevitable that it would end up at the top of the heap for the year - although SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW certainly gave it a run for its money.

WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM ... is obviously guaranteed a spot near the top of the U.K. critics' lists this year, but the U.S. is another story. It's getting great reviews here, to be sure, but nothing compared to the deification it's received in Old Blighty. I don't see it winding up with as high a Pazz & Jop rating as FF's first album.

(Assuming there _is_ a Pazz & Jop next February - Chuck Eddy was just fired as music editor at the VOICE, and strong rumor has it that Christgau is getting bounced as well as the new owners continue their ruthless housecleaning. If he's really leaving, I don't see P&J continuing, at least not at the VOICE; maybe Christgau will administer the poll on his own through his personal site.)

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Aren't they like the Ebert and Roeper of music?

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Harald I will keep saying it until they are toppled!

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

As if British music gets enough exposure. They start to make there marks in the US and they get this kind of reaction. This is why Brits don't like coming here.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I'm British.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Well that explains things perfectly. British critics hate their own kind once they make it big. Punk rock is the prime example.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I would agree with Bullfinch that 2006 hasn't been that great of a year for music so far (other than the Arctic Monkeys of course)! But I think it could end up being one of the best in recent memory with new releases from Pearl Jam, Tool and Red Hot Chili Peppers coming next month. Plus debut albums from The Raconteurs, Orson, Gnarls Barkley and Dirty Pretty Things(though I can't stand Carl). Also Muse, Blur, AC/DC, The Who, Kanye West and Metallica will release albums this year. And we might get late releases from The Killers, Travis and Roger Waters. And if were all good maybe R.E.M., David Bowie and Radiohead. Any year that has David Bowie, Radiohead, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, The Who, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blur, Kanye West and a debut like the Arctic Monkeys sounds like a great year of music to me!

Wow I wrote to MUCH

Don't Sleep on David Gilmour either.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Looking forward to the Pearl Jam album, but I'm no fan of Tool I have to say. The Smashing Pumpkins are going to record a new album in the summer which might be released before the end of the year. What else? New Gomez album, possibly a new Go! Team effort and KT Tunstall.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I have a feeling that Pearl Jam, Tool and Red Hot Chili Peppers will all release what many will consider are the worst albums of thier careers.

The Raconteurs and Gnarls Barkley albums a re very solid. Dirty Pretty Things albums starts well but ends up sounding as bad as Down In Albion.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Hey all!

I thought 2005 was great year and more than lived upto the expectations built by 2004....for the first time after years I was humming songs which were current.

I still find it shocking that Editors' "The Back Room" did not make the list last year, nor did KT Tunstall's "Eye to the Telescope"....
Editors are the band of 2005 and KT Tunstall is a talent that steamrolls any other contemporary female artist (comparisons to Dido/Joss Stone? Oh stop!).

2006 will probably see an unknown artist/band come from the blue and strike gold. So don't just focus on the big and hyped releases! So Arctic Monkeys can eat egg. Haha. I think they have talent though..they can grow...everyone should just let them be.

Later,

Aveek.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I think I like Gnarls Barkley, might have to check out their album.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

'I think I like Gnarls Barkley, might have to check out their album.'

Yes, well, that song sounds good.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

2005 was by far the worst year of the 00s. If the Killer's new release is a highlight than this may turn out to be an aweful year. At least the 1st 6 months are already putting 05 to shame. Most of these bands that you mentioned are in their early 40s or older. We need young blood nowadays. These bands are like those tv shows that run out of steam (Rosanne, Cosby Show, Frasier, West Wing, ER, Murphy Brown, the Simpsons). It's time to call it quits. What's wrong with all these females that are making it big? Most have put out terrific efforts. Don't count the grrls out!

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Can't wait for the new Muse record out in July. That could be one of the best releases this year.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

If the Muse record is one of the best of the year then I will fill my ears with concrete.

Futureheads second isn't a patch on the first, shame.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Even the first one had that annoying synthy sound that all the clubs and kids are in to nowadays.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I'm surprised At War with the Mystics is in the top 10. Unlike Flaming Lips' previous two albums this one is very unremarkable.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Henrik, have you seen the new Consumer Guide in this week's VILLAGE VOICE (apparently the reports of Christgau's departure were wrong)? He awards FISHSCALE a rare A+, the first one he's given to a new album since SMILE in 2004; I think the only other ones he's handed out this decade were for LOVE AND THEFT and STORIES FROM THE CITY, STORIES FROM THE SEA. (Christgau hasn't rated any of the other albums in the current top 5 yet.)

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Harold, Christgau's review is included at metacritic.com

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Get rid of Built to Spill. Best Ofs shouldn't count. In that case put Lullibies to Violane by the Cocteau Twins in as well.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Are you saying the new Built to Spill is a Best Of? Because it's actually all new material.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Ma Bad! I heard a best of was coming.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Hey Henrik,

Have you heard of this guy called Piero Scaruffi? Apparently he is a famous music historian and journalist...among other things...like being a scientist!

Go to www.scaruffi.com and click on music for lists by year.

Its interesting and strange...Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" is the only album ever to receive 9 out of 10! He hails it as rock's only true great contribution to music...Any takers?

Later.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Yes I've seen scaruffi.com, Scaruffi has been discussed here in the forum before and something from his website will be included in one of the nearest updates.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Hey, "Pearl Jam" is getting rave reviews...haven't heard it yet...how is it? Their best in 12 years?!!!

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Looks like the last two years have been comeback years for the 10+ year old bands. Greenday "American Idiot", Oasis "Don't Believe the Truth" and now Pearl Jam..hope Radiohead hits home.

The last time such a thing happened was during grunge 14 years back in 91-92 with R.E.M. "Automatic For The People" and U2 "Achtung Baby"...although they were far superior albums to these.

I think the music industry undegoes a shake-up every 10-15 years....still awaiting the next one...but it's definitely getting there.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Unfortuantely it looks like Radiohead won't be putting out a full length album this year, probably will be some EP's though.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Just bought the Wolfmother debut and I think it is one of the best albums so far this year. Also, the new Pearl Jam record lives up to all the good reviews.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Where are the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Am I the only person wondering why RHCP arent on the list? They seem to have got a lot of good reviews.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I had been wondering about the Chili Peppers myself. But Henrik's ranking is based mostly on Metacritic, and STADIUM ARCADIUM only has a 70 there. That's higher than the Strokes album, though, so I'm not sure exactly how Henrik calculates the final rank.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Strokes' metascore is based on many more ratings and therefore they have made the top 50. RHCP is just outside the list.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Doesn't Serena-Maneesh's s/t count as a 2005 release?

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Well, Metacritic have finally included that 5 star rating from Q for Stadium Arcadium. So it's overall score is now up to 72 from 24 reviews. It's interesting to see that Stefan has it 9th on his list. As well as Metacritic & Q he's included :

'RATE YOUR MUSIC', 'FASTNBULBOUS', 'MUSIK EXPRESS', 'SPEX', 'MUSIC BOX' AND NEW ALSO
'ROBERT CHRISTGAU'.

So i guess the ratings from these 6 must have been universally excellent !

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Doesn't Serena-Maneesh's s/t count as a 2005 release?

That's correct. I hadn't noticed this. Thanks.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Is it safe to assume that Johnny Cash and TV on the Radio (released in the U.K. this week, with the U.S. release to follow next month) will be making fairly high debuts in the next weekly update?

Amazing how stable the list has been as we reach the halfway point of the year. The top five albums from the initial 2006 update Henrik posted months ago are all still in the top ten.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Harold I think that shows how poor the rest of the year has been.

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

There have been some amazing releases this year! Just very few indie (and to be honest these lists all look like they were compiled by the NME)

Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
Tool - 10000 Days
Lacuna Coil - Karmacode
The Gathering - Home

To name but a few "metal" groups. The lists don't include this. I think were the reviews are coming from needs to be looked at!

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

Yes, metacritic has left out some metal magazines. That's not good, and I wish I had time to add those excluded magazines, but I simply don't.

Of the new albums below (bolded), Raconteurs should have been included a long time ago. A mistake.

1. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

3. Scott Walker - The Drift
4. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
5. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I used to like Catatonia. Who's stealing their name?

Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I actually know why these past few years have been so lousy as far as music goes. It's thanks to a little invention called the MP3 Player. People don't but music any more so bands can't make money. Cds are becoming obsolete and record stores are closing. Right now is just about the worst time ever to be in music. Those years of releasing 3 albums in one year are turning out to be 3 albums in one decade. Of course the artist don't want to admit that MP3's are responsible with the declining sales because of the Napster fiasco but it's the truth. Marketing music is harder now than it's ever been. Myspace helps but it's not the the solution.

Re: Re: Preliminary list of the most acclaimed albums of 2006

I'm a huge fan of Scaruffi, because I identify quite a bit with his philosophy of rating albums solely on their creativity and innovativeness, regardless of their "listenability" or "sellability". But it's only one man's take, so I really like what you're doing here with Acclaimed Music. I do hope that his lists are included very soon, if they haven't already. I'm a newbie to this site.
