Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

I'm not surprised they doctored the results -- they've probably been doing that for years. And may I say now that Bloc Party are EXTREMELY overpraised.

Ironically enough, Pitchfork doctored their EOY last year so Arcade Fire came in at No. 1 -- Funeral actually should've been 4th or something, but I think Pitchfork wanted to retain their stock as the site that "broke" the band.

Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

Looking at the top ten it contains a bunch of NME endorsed bands. (Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, The White Stripes and Babyshambles.) The rest all seem to be records at odds with the 14-21 market they are aiming at like Sufjan and Antony.

Glad they didn't include 9/10 albums from The Others and The Subways. Americans didn't do too well (No Beck, Weezer or Nine Inch Nails which all got 8's I think.)

Silent Alarm has 5/6 great tracks on it but too much filler to be considred album of the year. Compare the strengths of the songs on Franz Ferdinand last year.

Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

Where did you find out about Pitchfork's doctoring? Is that common for a lot of lists, at least in the manipulation of what will be the single album of the year? Maybe it's best to look at the best albums on lists from #10 on down to account for any hype or any critic bias that isn't strictly based on their view of the quality of the music.

Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

Where did you find out about Pitchfork's doctoring?

They included all the different individual critics' lists with the feature, and I added 'em up. For the most part the order perfectly matched, except near the top.

Is that common for a lot of lists, at least in the manipulation of what will be the single album of the year?

I really have no idea, as usually there is very little transparency with the decision-making. Plus, editors can probably override whatever results come in. For example, Ryan Schreiber made a point of championing Funeral on Pitchfork, it was No. 1 on his list, and it "seemed" right on top of their list (i.e., it didn't surprise me), even though Devendra Banhart, Animal Collective, and Brian Wilson all out-polled it.

Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

That NME list just highlights a couple of things for me:

1) This year has been pretty poor for music

2) NME dont have a clue

That top 10 is absolutely dire, how they can put the Franz Ferdinand album 3rd I will never know, it's a shocking album.

Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

Um, The Others only got 8/10 & The Subways only got 7/10.
Other albums that got 9/10 that are missing include Roots Manuva, Idlewild, System Of A Down (8 for Mezmerize, 9 for Hypnotize), Kano, Bright Eyes (Digital Ash), My Computer, Khonnor, Lightning Bolt and The Wrens. It's also a surprise they didn't put in Hot Hot Heat and Foo Fighters.

Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

Thanks for picking me up on the above. I have heard that they had to bring in a freelance to review The Others as none of the permanent staff would have given it a glowing review.

Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

Mitchell, is the Q albums list you posted a readers' list as the tracks list is, or is that the critics' album list? The placement of X & Y at #1 gives me a clue that it's the former, but I want to make sure.

I think you should repost these Q and MOJO lists on the forum under their own headings, rather than bury them here in the NME thread. That'll make it easier for us to comment on them separately -- and make it easier for Henrik to find them as well!

Re: NME best of 2005 Albums

No the Q albums list is compiled by Aizelwood, Duerden, Harris, Kessler etc.

I'll repost later then.
