Sneak preview of the coming update!

I still have a lot of work to do before I can update the site with jazz and world recordings, but I have finally come to a stage where I have a preliminary album list on my computer.

There is still a lot of work to do on the songs as well as on links and formatting. I feel really sorry to keep you waiting and waiting and therefore I would like to do something for you here in the forum in the meantime.

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Harold,
"Moanin'" and "Song for my Father" are in the top 1000 but not in the top 600. On the other hand you picked "Free Jazz" and "Out to Lunch" correctly.

Shaun, you got "Lady in Satin" and "Blues and Roots" right.

I also found out that I made a mistake. There are only 43 new albums in the preliminary top 600.

This means that we now have the following list.

1. Benny Goodman - Carnegie Hall Concert
2. Thelonius Monk - Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 1
3. The Quintet - Jazz at Massey Hall
4. Miles Davis - Jeru/Birth of the Cool
5. Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours
6.
7. Frank Sinatra - Songs for Swingin Lovers
8. Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
9. Duke Ellington - Ellington at Newport
10. Ella Fitzgerald - Sings the Cole Porter Songbook
11. John Coltrane - Blue Train
12.
13. Thelonius Monk - Brilliant Corners
14. Billie Holiday - Lady in Satin
15.
16. Cannonball Adderley - Something Else
17. Frank Sinatra - Sings for Only the Lonely
18. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
19. Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come
20. John Coltrane - Giant Steps
21. Dave Brubeck - Time Out
22. Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
23. Charles Mingus - Blues and Roots
24. Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
25. Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar of...
26. Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth
27. Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz
28. Bill Evans - Sunday at the Village Vanguard
29. John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
30. Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
31. Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
32. Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
33. Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
34. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
35. Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
36.
37. Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
38. Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
39. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
40. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame
41.
42. King Sunny Adé - Juju Music
43. Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social Club

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

The more blanks get filled in, the more fun this gets. OK, time to roll up the old sleeves and try to figure this out:

I'm going to take a wild stab here and guess that most of the five remaining slots are filled by one artist, namely Ol' Blue Eyes. #6 is SWING EASY; #12 is either COME FLY WITH ME or A SWINGIN' AFFAIR; #15 could be COME DANCE WITH ME; and #36, I'm guessing, is SEPTEMBER OF MY YEARS. The only other possibility I can think of for #36 is Miles Davis' MILES SMILES, depending on how accurate the chronology is.

As for #41, I'll say that's either Herbie Hancock's HEAD HUNTERS or Weather Report's HEAVY WEATHER.

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

One of these was correct, namely "Head Hunters".

Four more to go!

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Two more guesses before I call it a night:
#12 is Count Basie's ATOMIC BASIE
#36 is John Coltrane's ASCENSION

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Sarah Vaughan - With Clifford Brown
Miles Davis - Relaxin'
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Music
Charles Mingus - At Antibes

Surely...

Mr. Coleman's A Love Supreme must be in there!

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Count Basie was correct.

"A Love Supreme" by Mr. Coltrane is included.

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Hmm, this is getting tougher ...

#6 is either Billie Holiday's LADY SINGS THE BLUES or Clifford Brown's STUDY IN BROWN.

#15 is either Miles Davis' MILESTONES or Ella Fitzgerald's SINGS THE GEORGE AND IRA GERSHWIN SONGBOOK.

#36 is THE HELIOCENTRIC WORLDS OF SUN RA, VOLS. 1 & 2.

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Nope.

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Somebody else is going to have to take a crack at the remaining three -- I'm tapped out. Any clues, Henrik?

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Rousing myself for a last gasp:
Is #15 ... Miles Davis' PORGY AND BESS?
Is #36 ... Mr. Davis' LIVE AT THE PLUGGED NICKEL?

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Porgy and Bess is correct!

#6 is a live album
#36 is, based on reviews I have read, a challenging listen, suitable for Halloween!

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

#6: Erroll Garner's CONCERT BY THE SEA?
I'll have to think about #36. Something by Roland Kirk, perhaps?

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Is #36 Andrew Hill's POINT OF DEPARTURE?

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Is 36 Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil?

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

SPEAK NO EVIL was already suggested in a previous post. It's probably in the top 1000, but not the top 600.

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

#36 - Albert Ayler, Spiritual Unity?

(It does have songs about "Ghosts" on it!)

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

sonofsamiam, I think you may have gotten it! The titles on the Ayler album make sense in terms of Henrik's clue, and it fits the time frame.

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

You got it right with "Concert by the Sea" and "Spirital Unity". Good job!

I hope you enjoyed this little game.

LOL!

at my confusing Coleman and Coltrane.

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Wow...this is very exciting. I can't wait to see how they fit into the current top 200.

44 in the top 600; is there any way you can tell us how many of these crack the top 200?

Also, with the update of new genres and also new albums being released weekly, when do you foresee expanding the top 2000 to 2500 or 3000?

Re: Sneak preview of the coming update!

Unfortunately a very small percentage of the 44 albums are in the top 200, that's all I want to say at the moment...

In one of the next updates there will be an extension to 2500!

Ohh, Very Nice!

the top 2,500. :)

Henrik- after the all-inclusive update, you'll be taking a month or so off before doing the next update, correct? After the all-inclusive update, adding the sea of lists thereafter should be a snap (in their prioritized order, of course). Well, all except maybe Songs and Albums of the Century, and the Rock Song Index. Of course, I've already volunteered my services for that down the road.
