BLENDER Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s

The new BLENDER is out, and the top song of the 80s-00s is Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." BLENDER's list is...interesting as there are two Backstreet Boys songs on there and two Christina Aguilera songs on it. One-hit wonders like Digital Underground and L'Trimm also made it on there.

I Was Wondering When Blender Would...

have a list of this sort.

Are you a subscriber? I am, and I haven't received the new one yet.

I would guess one of Aguilera's songs is Beautiful, and one of Backstreet's is I Want it That Way.

From wlbc.com...

#4 - U2, One
#5 - NIRVANA, Smells Like Teen Spirit
#6 - MADONNA, Like A Prayer
#7 - JOY DIVISION, Love Will Tear Us Apart
#8 - RUN D.M.C., Sucker MC's
#9 - BRITNEY SPEARS, ...Baby One More Time
#10 - 50 CENT, In Da Club

Numbers 11 to 20 are as follows:

#11 - GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS FIVE, The Message
#12 - BEASTIE BOYS, Fight For Your Right (To Party)
#13 - EMINEM, My Name Is
#14 - DIANA ROSS, I'm Coming Out
#15 - AC/DC, You Shook Me All Night Long
#16 - OUTKAST, Hey Ya
#17 - BACKSTREET BOYS, I Want It That Way
#18 - RICK JAMES, Super Freak
#19 - NOTORIOUS B.I.G., Hypnotize
#20 - DOUG E. FRESH & THE GET FRESH CREW, The Show

And in case you're wondering, song number 500 is COLDPLAY's Yellow. The rest of the list includes everything from SIR MIX-A-LOT to NO DOUBT to NORAH JONES and DIDO.

Re: BLENDER Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s

I saw a news item on this. The title of the list is "The Top 500 Songs Since You Were Born." It should be interesting to see the full list.

Re: BLENDER Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s

I'm not a subscriber; I was in Barnes & Noble yesterday and saw the magazine and looked through it.

Some very interesting inclusions:
Backstreet Boys - "Larger Than Life"
Aerosmith - "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"
Clint Black - "Killin' Time" (cool they included country, but why this one?)

Moonbeam Will Be PLEASED to Know...

that it looks like Prince has the most songs on the list, at 7. Madonna has 6. Kinda shows how maybe Rolling Stone went a tad overboard in having 23 (or whatever the number was) Beatles songs in its top 500 of all time (as great as those songs are- a pub probably shouldn't go *that* overboard in the number of selections per act).

The Prince songs and their rankings:

24. "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"
98. "When You Were Mine"
106. "Little Red Corvette"
169. "When Doves Cry"
259. "Kiss"
375. "Purple Rain"
412. "If I Was Your Girlfriend"

The Madonna songs and their rankings:
6. "Like a Prayer"
84. "Borderline"
87. "Into the Groove"
285. "Don't Tell Me"
401. "Ray of Light"
468. "Papa Don't Preach"

Re: BLENDER Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s

Interesting list! I'm happy to see Prince place 7 songs, but the Backstreet Boys? At number 17?

Well...

"I Want it That Way" has garnered some acclaim via lists, so I guess it's not too shocking to see it here. The list does have some varrity in it- some straight-out pop tracks, as well as some less so.

From what I can see, aside from P & M, these are acts with at least 3 songs:

U2: 5
Eminem: 4
Run-D.M.C.: 4
Outkast: 4
L.L. Cool J: 4
Nirvana: 4
Jay-Z: 4
Beastie Boys: 4
Public Enemy: 4
Michael Jackson: 3
R.E.M.: 3
Guns N Roses: 3
Radiohead: 3
Bruce Springsteen: 3
New Order: 3
Destiny's Child: 3

I Want It That Way

I placed I Want it That Way at 64 on my list for the song poll currently ongoing at this site, and I’m not trying to be knowingly ironic in the least: I think it’s one of the most perfectly written pop songs I’ve ever heard regardless of genre. It’s a great example of popular songwriting craftsmanship at the very highest possible level, and I for one consider it to be on par with Big Star’s September Gurls or Randy Newman’s Sail Away, just to through two other examples of great songwriting out there.

Re: BLENDER Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s

Anyone know the full list ?! Please , post here !

Re: BLENDER Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s

This list is uninteresting. What kind of magazine is this BLENDER ? I can't believe someone can consider these songs as the best songs of the last 20 years. It's a shame for music !

Oh, DA...

just because Prince and Madonna have the most songs on the list, don't get into a tizzy. ;)

Blender is a music magazine- it's spawned from the creators of Maxim, but it's a pretty cool publication. The writing is zippy and at times witty. Its circulation is roughly half that of Rolling Stone.

Re: BLENDER Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s

Sorry JR, I didn't even talk about Prince and Madonna. OK sometimes I like to tease you JR and Moonbeam about your endless love passion for Prince and Madonna that I try hard to understand by don't really succeed.. But I don't dislike Madonna or Prince, I even think that they each made a couple of fair songs and that they are two of most representative artists of the 80s period. I think this BLENDER list is just crap because of the presence of minor artists that make commercial music, middle-of-the-road music, that should have no place in best-of-lists. That's just music whose aim is to sell some more records, make money. That's the thing of the time, music to consume fast, in no way a music destined to live long and to be impress on the books of music history... I talk about : Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Aerosmith, Destiny's Child, Jay Z, Run DMC, LL Cool J, 50 Cent, Notorious Big, No Doubt, Dough E Fresh, Norah Jones, Dido, and many others. I will never forgive BLENDER for that.

Run-DMC?

Surely you jest, DA! RDMC is one of the most acclaimed and important acts of its genre. I do agreew with many of the others you listed- especially 50 Cent. But, I htink Blender's aim was to cpmbat the Rolling Stone list, where there was little representation of more modern music.

Being a follower of AM, you should know though, that, for exampel, Britney Spears' two tracks on the list have done very well on best-of lists (but note that her albums haven't). There are a number of big commercial hits on Blender's list, but, again, part of the list's purpose is to give some notice to what they consider to be good pop songs. It's not like a bumber of those on the list do well in other lists, so it's not going to impact the overall grand scheme of all things acclaimed. Similar to the Songs & Artists Classic Playlists- it's only going to aid those tracks that already have a decent level of notable acclaim.

Re: BLENDER Top 500 Songs of the 80s-00s

The BLENDER website has songs number 251-500 posted; if you want the top 250, it says, you have to buy the magazine. Bastards. I'm sure the full list will pop up somewhere sooner or later.

Unless you're completely allergic to pop, this is a fairly fascinating list. It's a weird mix of ubiquitous radio hits and hipster-cool tracks that runs the gamut from "I Want It That Way" to Metallica's "Battery" and everything in between. I've only given the list a once-over in a store, but I can tell you one inclusion that made me smile: a personal favorite cheesy classic-rock track, "Hold on Loosely" by Southern rockers .38 Special. I have always loved that song, and it's good to know I'm not the only one.
