Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

They manage to put in Bowie's Let's Dance but only Sign o' the Times from Prince's stellar 80s output?

I Can Sympathize...

i.e. Like a Virgin and no Like a Prayer! (not that I don't enjoy LAP).

Maybe they just figured LAV was more important a release than LAP. LAP is represented, though, via The Immaculate Collection, which kicks off the 1990 section.

We're going to see some albums in the 90s that weren't the biggest critical hits, but were commercial blockbusters. Of course, there also are some great critically successful albums included in the 90s, as well. But also one surprising omission- especially since it was one of the 90s most acclaimed and revered efforts. Stay tuned.

Like a Prayer

That surprised me too. Like a Prayer is easily better and more important than Like a Virgin. If they based the inclusion on sales, then why not include 1999 and Purple Rain, both of which being critical darlings that easily surpassed the sales of Sign o' the Times?

Obviously...

I meant to say "not that I don't enjoy *LAV*.

I don't think it's necessarily just sales- the LAV was a huge cultural album. It, along with the first album, were probably more influential (in various ways) than Like a Prayer.

Now, onto the 90s...

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

Great job JR!

However, as there are no Massive Attack albums listed, this list cannot be included.

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

I agree with Henrik, but I want to go one step further: All lists that do not include at least one Teenage Fanclub should be excluded from AMF.

Silly Henrik...

Don't you know that Massive Attack can't measure up to Creed?

Or Britney Spears, for that matter?

Hehe...

I think that's sarcasm, Henrik, though I cannot be sure!

Massive Attack is mentioned in the text for Portishead's album, as releasing what's regarded as the first trip-hop album. I know- small consolation.

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

Yes, the list will be included of course. But it's an odd list, mixing very interesting choices with some quite embarrasing picks. And any list that has "Autobahn" as the best Kraftwerk album is annoying to me. It shows that they don't really listen to them, and dutifully includes the album with the most famous song, rather than any of the later albums, which are much more impressive as a whole.

Re: Hey JR ...

Don't forget to post the list for the 2000s.

2000s

Of course, HW. :)

(BTW- the notable omission for the 1990s- for me- was Lauryn Hill!)

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

Thousand thanks, JR!

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

2000's list is predictably awful. should have got someone else to write him for him.

The Book Was Compiled By...

7 music writers.

The 1990s and 2000s do look to have their share of "huhs," but like Henrik said, there also are interesting choices along the way, in addition to undisputed classic albums.

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

Thanks for posting the list, JR! It's interesting at the very least! :D

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings - Updated edition

This book has just been issued in a new edition, paired in a reversible format with a companion volume on "Singles".

Here are the 2006 and 2007 albums that have been added to the Albums half of the new book:

2006
Lily Allen, ALRIGHT, STILL
Arctic Monkeys, WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT
Bob Dylan, MODERN TIMES
Joanna Newsom, YS
INTRODUCING JOSS STONE
Amy Winehouse, BACK TO BLACK
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL [original soundtrack]

2007
50 Cent, CURTIS
Arcade Fire, NEON BIBLE
Radiohead, IN RAINBOWS
Britney Spears, BLACKOUT
Timbaland, SHOCK VALUE
Kanye West, GRADUATION

The original edition of the Singles book came out about a year after the Albums one did, and I'm not sure if Henrik or anyone else ever transcribed it for the AM database. Anyone interested?

Definitely...

what year does it go through? And thanks. :)

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

Well, the new edition - which, as I said, is one-half of a book (officially titled CLASSIC TRACKS BACK TO BACK) also containing the updated version of the Albums volume - goes through 2007. Thanks.

Ooh, Gotcha...

sure, post whenever you get time. Thanks.

Re: Albums: 50 Years of Great Recordings

Sorry for the confusion - when I asked if anyone was interested, I meant was anyone interested in -doing- the transcription of the list. I don't have the book. If I -do- decide to buy it I would of course be happy to transcribe the Singles list, but I don't plan to at the moment.

Japandi is a design style that blends Japanese and Scandinavian influences. The result is a clean, minimal look that is both elegant and functional. Japandi furniture is often made of natural materials such as wood and stone, and it often features simple, clean lines. Color schemes are typically muted, with black, white, and gray being the most common. Japandi rooms are designed to be calm and relaxing, with a focus on simplicity and functionality. In recent years, Japandi has become increasingly popular as more people seek out ways to create a calming oasis in their homes. If you're looking for a way to bring a touch of Japandi into your home, start with simple changes like adding a few low-profile pieces of furniture or using muted colors in your decor. You may be surprised at how quickly you fall in love with the look.
