BTW,Prefab Sprout should be in 80s Pop instead of this
Funny you say that, I had Prefab in New Wave and A-Ha in 80's pop but changed it during my final draft putting A-ha into new wave and moving Prefab into this genre, a collection of modern rock artists pre-fall of '91. It gets tough trying to fit these puzzle pieces together...
I think their famous album Two Wheels Good/Steve McQueen can fall into this category but the rest is definitely as pop as it gets. It's almost a different band for me.
1. Pixies
2. Sonic Youth
3. Nirvana
4. Echo and the Bunnymen
5. REM
Also, why does late 70's/early 80's post-punk have to compete against all famous grunge bands and also REM? Shouldn't bands like The Jam and Echo be in a punk/post-punk/new wave genre?

tragic.
Blame it on Soundgarden, not Violent Femmes !
Violent Femmes self-titled is one of my favourite albums of the 80s, I like Big Star (heck, I have one of their songs in my top 10 ever) but I'd rather listen to Violent Femmes first album than to any Big Star album. (Granted, Big Star has 3 good albums where Violent Femmes only have 2)
I still want to know why post-punk/new wave had to compete with grunge and 80's alternative. Shouldn't grunge have been grouped with 90's rock?
I know this was a tough genre and there is a new wave genre which will be coming up. My thoughts on a pre-grunge genre was using alternative bands who released albums before fall of '91 and bands that came after placing them in a post-grunge genre. Since there was a multitude of alternative bands that can fit into other genres it is tough to have an exact science, there will be little quirks here and there, nothing is going to be perfect. I did not exactly create a 90's rock genre.
