Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

All right, tune-yards won me over, sorta, (although I refuse to do the upper case/lower case thing). Can you please slip them in at No. 18 on my list and move everything else down appropriately. Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience — at least it wasn't No. 1.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I'm not making a list because I haven't listened to alot of music from 2011, but I think it would be cool if everyone estimated the number of albums they actually listened to enough to form an opinion in 2011.

I think I have listened to a little bit more than 40 albums in full, about 30 included in current top 50.
I have heard at least 3 songs from almost all the top 50, I think that Washed Out, War on Drugs, John Maus and Gillian Welch are the only artists who released albums I haven't the slightest idea about (and most likely won't have the time to before the end of the vote)
I have 3 albums left I should be able to listen before the deadline, if I have more time I will try those 4.

I've rated 63 albums. Most of them I know well enough. Some just didn't seem to interest me to hear more often.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

Rated 62. Probably 20-25 of those I only listened to once, but I listened to everything that even stood a chance to make it into the top 20 at least twice. Anything that was close to the top 10, at least thrice.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

There are about 110 I listened to more than once. If you include all the ones I sampled for 20 minutes in my broad sweeps, maybe 300.

What I tend to do is take anything that stands out at the very top of somebody's list on either here, Metacritic, Metacricket, Anydecentmusic, RYM esoteric chart, Popmatters or Pitchfork, and add them to a huge list. Then I go through the list on streaming sites, listening to enough from each to make an educated guess for whether it will stay with me later, adding the ones that stand out to a smaller list for further listening later.

(Albums by artists I have high expectations from already go straight to the smaller list.)

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I've rated 38 albums. I've heard samples from about the same number (30-40).
This year there are more albums that I've listened more than once.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I've listened to 22 albums from 2011. I'm not sure that's enough to make an educated top 10, but I'm comfortable with my selections.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

There are 68 albums for me, with about 20 more on a need-to-hear list (most of which I probably won't get to anytime soon). I think that's enough for a pretty solid top 30, especially since I typically don't listen to things I know I probably won't like.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I got through about 150 last year. With EPs and 12"s probably got around 230-240 releases.

Jeez!

Thanks to Frank Ocean and the Weeknd, this is the first time I'm excited by coming R&B releases since... well, ever !

Rocky Raccoon, BillAdama and Vanillafire1000, I'm just acknowledging your requests for changes/additions to your lists.

Every single list is making albums rise and fall in ranking, so keep 'em coming.

Jackson
Great list Brad. I had never heard of this album, but I'm definitely putting it on my to-do list. Nice to see votes for Matana Roberts, Akron/Family, and Julianna Barwick.
Sincere thanks Jackson. Arbouretum tends toward the "stoner" rock category (a la Dead Meadow, Comets On Fire, etc.) for better or worse. Certainly a 4.9 rating from Pitchfork could have been (was?) the kiss of death. But if you like heavy, plodding guitar jams in the minor key (and lawd knows I do), give this one a spin & enjoy the (Slo-)ride.
