Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

Ddiamondd
I won't include tracks by UK bass acts as they very likely will not be included by anyone else and thus would be wasted votes.

---

For anyone interested, though, 20 brilliant UK garage/house/tecnno/'bass' tracks to check out would be:

2/ Julio Bashmore - Battle For Middle You
3/ Mosca - Bax

I'll be voting for these. I just got into this style with the end of year lists from Fact, Resident Advisor, and a couple of others.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

Just one question : does the ranking order matter or do we just have to make a list of 20 songs without ranking them ?

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

^ Even though ranked lists are more interesting to look at, the songs don't have to be ranked. The ranking order doesn't really matter because the first 20 songs on every list count as 1 nomination each, regardless of rank.

It's so hard for me to remember songs by name, or even to pick out individual favorites on most of the albums I like.

My list will focus a little more on standout songs from albums I do not think are that great as a whole.

This is mostly nonstrategic, but there are one or two instances where I noticed one or two other votes for a particular song and made sure to include it over some other equally deserving songs.

Josh T Pearson - Sorry With A Song

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

I've been gone for a fairly long time, but I want to make a point to participate in these polls.

What is the rule on strategic voting in the nomination round? No preference, but it makes a difference if you don't want to vote for a song that seems assured of a spot in the second round.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

1. Lady Gaga - "The Edge of Glory"

It shocks me to no end that my song of the year is by Lady Gaga. I enjoyed a few songs of hers here and there, but I would never have considered myself a fan. I still don't, but with such transcendent magic like this song, I can see what the fuss is all about. For someone whose material seems so calculated to release the most moving song of the year is quite the surprise! The increasing oomph with which she repeatedly guts out "the edge!" is just wonderful.

2. Björk - "Moon"

Björk is one of my absolute favorites, but I wasn't anticipating Biophilia all that much. Nonetheless, the entire album blew me away as she seems to have found that singular focus of hers again. There isn't a more gorgeous song from 2011 than this one - it really does feel like being reborn, Vespertine style!

3. Gotye featuring Kimbra - "Somebody That I Used to Know"

Probably the best Australian pop song since "Can't Get You Out of My Head". A hushed start opens up with tuned percussion and a warm, vibrating string as Gotye recounts the details of a breakup with what seems like resigned acceptance before launching into a wonderful chorus bitterly decrying the cold brush-off and the sudden transition of his ex from someone so beloved to somebody that he used to know. While this in itself would make for a good song in its own right, it becomes great as Kimbra chimes in to present the other side of the story and turn the song on its head. As such, we learn that Gotye's character carried the residual memory of previous romantic fallouts into this relationship, which ultimately doomed it, and that the previous details he recounted were describing his previous relationships. Gotye immediately returns for one more chorus, and complemented by Kimbra's wails, it resonates with new meaning. Rather than be a sad-sack "woe is me" song, "Somebody That I Used to Know" serves as a chilling narrative of a cyclical self-sabotaging inability to let go of past heartbreak in which new relationships inevitably serve as mere vehicles for new faces to occupy old wounds.

4. Björk - "Thunderbolt"

Biophilia seems to combine the sentiment of Vespertine and Homogenic. If "Moon" brought back the twinkling sacred beauty of Vespertine, "Thunderbolt" is a return of the molten fury of Homogenic, complete with insatiable passion scorched through spiky synths.

5. Lady Gaga - "Born This Way"

I swear, I'm not a Lady Gaga fan! However, I can't deny that I really adored two of her songs this year. My biggest gripe with her material prior to this is that she seemed so intent on casting an image of cool. But this is just so unabashedly cheesy with its lyrics of self-empowerment and roaring synths that I couldn't help but love it.

6. St. Vincent - "Northern Lights"

I liked Actor, but I loooooooove Strange Mercy for its wicked, sky-charring feverishness. There's nothing that sends a song careening over the edge of sanity quite like a Moog freakout, and this song arguably does it better than any song I've heard since the 70s.

More to come.

3. Gotye featuring Kimbra - "Somebody That I Used to Know"

This one is ridiculously popular here, in Poland.

It's ridiculously popular pretty much everywhere. Given the quality of the rest of the album I'm gonna predict it will be a one-hit-wonder.

The Black Keys album has really grown on me and those are two stand-out songs. I'm updating my songs list and I'll probably vote for both.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

I'm not sure are these my favorite songs of last year but I didn't have time to do this better.
If you're not familiar with some of the songs I recommend especially you to listen to TV on the Radio song (it's better than any of the songs from Nine Types of Lights).

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Somewhere Over the Double Rainbow
Battles feat. Matías Aguayo - Ice Cream
Bon Iver - Perth
Burial - Street Halo
Burial – Stolen Dog
Destroyer - China Town
Earth - Old Black
Explosions in the Sky - Postcards from 1952
Gang Gang dance - Glass Jar
Iron & Wine - Walking Far from Home
Kurt Vile - Baby's Arms
Lana Del Rey - Videogames
M83 - Midnight City
Mirel Wagner - No Death
Mogwai - Music for a Forgotten Future (The Singing Mountain)
Radiohead - Codex
TV on the Radio - All Falls Down

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

These four songs stand above everything else that I've heard from 2011:

Gotye featuring Kimbra - Somebody That I Used to Know
Metronomy - The Look
Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers
Adele - Rolling in the Deep

Others I like:

Metronomy - Everything Goes My Way
Radiohead - Bloom
PJ Harvey - The Glorious Land
Lykke Li - Love Out of Lust
James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream
Avicii - Levels

By the way, I think most of the songs on Gotye's new album are pretty good, but "Like Drawing Blood" is even better, especially the song "Hearts a Mess". One of the most underrated artists of our time.

I'll have to check out Like Drawing Blood.

Here's my review of Making Mirrors, a very puzzling album for me.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

More nominations:

7. The Human League - "Sky"

I had doubts about a Human League reunion, but songs like this squashed my fears! "Sky" is vintage dark, loping, mid-tempo broodiness entwined in layers of synths. In other words, it's exactly what Human League has been acclaimed for since 1981.

8. St. Vincent - "Surgeon"

Clark's ability to make such terrifying lyrics so beguiling is top-notch. And that Moog breakdown at the end... WOW.

9. Metronomy - "The Bay"

Does it surprise anyone that my favorite song on an indie synth album is the one that brings the most funk? It's a snooty funk to be sure, but that octave-stepping bass on top of those gorgeous swathes of synth sets my heart alight.

10. The Strokes - "Macchu Picchu"

That percolating guitar and clean drumming that open this song and album burst through with such vintage joy! The way the guitars alone finish off the chorus shows off their melodic skill, too, making this the album's highlight.

11. Björk - "Cosmogony"

A magical recounting of 4 different tales of how the world and universe came to be. Only Björk could make all 4 sound so sacred.

12. Emma-Louise - "Jungle"

I stumbled upon this by accident through a local radio station. I was immediately taken by the gently pulsing synth patterns and the singer's delicate voice before the chorus flexes some gritty instrumental muscle while her voice ethereally soars! I quickly researched the artist only to find that she was shockingly only a teenager, and unsigned by a label at that! "Jungle" is well beyond its years, although looking back I certainly can attest to the fact that my head was a jungle, too, at that age.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

Nobody else likes "The Edge of Glory"? JR?

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

Last day to nominate songs.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Songs Poll - Stage 1

So most likely songs with 2 and 3 nomination will pass, won't they ?

That's right. There are 36 songs with at least 3 nominations and a further 63 songs with 2 nominations. So at the moment the total number of songs that will advance to the final round is 99.
