Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

Please put Belong by The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart at number 9 and therefore moving the albums from my original list from 9 to 20 one rank below putting Cooder's work out of the list. Thank you and sorry for the trouble made.

1. Girls - Father Son Holy Ghost

A great guitar album and very original because of its many influences : punk AND prog rock in the same song !! ("Die")

That's no trouble at all... but it was quite painful to take Ry Cooder off your list.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I had The Leisure Society at #3 all year, #2 a few weeks ago but I just keep going back to that album and I still think it's absolutely great. I'm shocked that it was barely reviewed, not to mention barely heard. Anyway, I thought 2011 had 7 fantastic albums, ones that I think I'll always love. After that, the year kind of falls off a cliff. The difference between #7 and #8 for me is huge.

One thing I found in 2011 is that it's becoming a bigger chore to find music I really enjoy. Rate Your Music charts found me The Leisure Society, I took Pitchfork's advice with Bon Iver even though I didn't care for the debut, TV on the Radio and Girls were albums by bands I already had liked, and Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Asteroid #4 I think were both from reading an Under the Radar review. I feel like I missed out on some good stuff in 2011 even though I listened to a lot of albums just because I didn't have a consistent source for finding new music: Music is so diverse right now and it seems like every critical site or magazine is trying to tackle it all. At the end of the year I kind of stopped trying to seek it out and letting it find me but I'm not listening to a whole lot of new stuff that way. I need a solution to this problem!

Cream of the crop:

1. The Leisure Society - Into the Murky Water
2. TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light
3. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong
4. Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver
5. Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost
6. Asteroid No. 4 - Hail to the Clear Figurines
7. Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for My Halo

Good but I doubt I'll revisit these:

8. Akron/Family - S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT
9. Cults - Cults
10. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
11. Fruit Bats - Tripper
12. The Antlers - Burst Apart
13. Tennis - Cape Dory
14. YACHT - Shangri-La
15. David Lowery - The Palace Guards
16. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - A Corporate World
17. Givers - In Light

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

my list in progress

JuJu and Kouyate/Neerman are 2 fantastic African vs Western World albums

This year I chose, rather than to hear 100 albums one time, to take time to discover the albums I liked; I probably missed some albums but there are so many anyway...

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

All right, tune-yards won me over, sorta, (although I refuse to do the upper case/lower case thing). Can you please slip them in at No. 18 on my list and move everything else down appropriately. Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience — at least it wasn't No. 1.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I'm not making a list because I haven't listened to alot of music from 2011, but I think it would be cool if everyone estimated the number of albums they actually listened to enough to form an opinion in 2011.

I think I have listened to a little bit more than 40 albums in full, about 30 included in current top 50.
I have heard at least 3 songs from almost all the top 50, I think that Washed Out, War on Drugs, John Maus and Gillian Welch are the only artists who released albums I haven't the slightest idea about (and most likely won't have the time to before the end of the vote)
I have 3 albums left I should be able to listen before the deadline, if I have more time I will try those 4.

I've rated 63 albums. Most of them I know well enough. Some just didn't seem to interest me to hear more often.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

Rated 62. Probably 20-25 of those I only listened to once, but I listened to everything that even stood a chance to make it into the top 20 at least twice. Anything that was close to the top 10, at least thrice.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

There are about 110 I listened to more than once. If you include all the ones I sampled for 20 minutes in my broad sweeps, maybe 300.

What I tend to do is take anything that stands out at the very top of somebody's list on either here, Metacritic, Metacricket, Anydecentmusic, RYM esoteric chart, Popmatters or Pitchfork, and add them to a huge list. Then I go through the list on streaming sites, listening to enough from each to make an educated guess for whether it will stay with me later, adding the ones that stand out to a smaller list for further listening later.

(Albums by artists I have high expectations from already go straight to the smaller list.)

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I've rated 38 albums. I've heard samples from about the same number (30-40).
This year there are more albums that I've listened more than once.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I've listened to 22 albums from 2011. I'm not sure that's enough to make an educated top 10, but I'm comfortable with my selections.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

There are 68 albums for me, with about 20 more on a need-to-hear list (most of which I probably won't get to anytime soon). I think that's enough for a pretty solid top 30, especially since I typically don't listen to things I know I probably won't like.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I got through about 150 last year. With EPs and 12"s probably got around 230-240 releases.

Jeez!

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

I bought 38 CD's (yes, I still like to actually purchase CD's so I can truly listen to an album 3 times in my car to get a real feel for them). I listened to another 50+ or so off advice from users on this forum, RYM and a few publications I check out throughout the year. A lot of those did not leave a favorable impression, except for maybe a song or two which I will then purchase those songs individually and forget about the albums.

That being said, there is soooo much new music and really no format to figure out what is necessary to check out and that makes it so difficult to really know what is worthwhile. I do have the pleasure of having a great radio station here in Milwaukee, 88.9 which is kind of an Acclaimed Music wet dream with alot of indie with a blend of hip-hop, r&b, reggae and artists like The Smiths, Elvis Costello, Springsteen, Marley, Prince, The Cure etc... mixed with the likes of Bon Iver, The Roots, M83, Arcade Fire and so on... If you have a chance to check it out online, it could be a find for alot of us on here. I have to say, it is my #1 source when it comes time to spend an afternoon searching for new music at my local record store.

Finally, I always enjoy reccomendations from everyone here on the forum. I like having a source when I want to check out some new music. Keep up the good work.

Thanks to Frank Ocean and the Weeknd, this is the first time I'm excited by coming R&B releases since... well, ever !

Jackson
Great list Brad. I had never heard of this album, but I'm definitely putting it on my to-do list. Nice to see votes for Matana Roberts, Akron/Family, and Julianna Barwick.
Sincere thanks Jackson. Arbouretum tends toward the "stoner" rock category (a la Dead Meadow, Comets On Fire, etc.) for better or worse. Certainly a 4.9 rating from Pitchfork could have been (was?) the kiss of death. But if you like heavy, plodding guitar jams in the minor key (and lawd knows I do), give this one a spin & enjoy the (Slo-)ride.

Re: The 2011 Year-End Albums Poll

Here we are. A very good year for rootsy stuff, like 2008.
Fleet Foxes album is a great delivery, folkier than the previous, less focused but great songs with fantastic instrumentation.
Ry C and Tom W could've been number 1 in many other years.
This forum's favorite albums (PJ, James B and Bon iver) get honorable mentions but none of them is a record I'd actually like to hear again.
