I think we should, although someone like Shakira or Nelly Furtado, who have both released Spanish albums that don't have 1000 votes on RYM, probably should not be eligible.
Yes let's say they're not eligible. the line is kinda blurred, but you are the judge (an I can be your assistant)
And one more question : I suppose Hawaii is in the Pacific region and not North America. What's your opinion ?
like nic, i'm happy to withdraw some of these if people who haven't voted yet would like to nominate some songs
1.1 - Abdel Aziz el Mubarak - "Tahrimni Minnak" (Sudan)
1.2 - Baaba Maal - "Tindo" (Senegal)
1.3 - Geoffrey Oryema - "Lapwony" (Uganda)
1.4 - Abdullah Ibrahim - "The Mountain" (South Africa)
3.1 - Fantastic Plastic Machine - "Philter" (Japan)
3.2 - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Michael Brook - "Sweet Pain" (Pakistan)
3.3 - The Dawn - "Abot Kamay" (Phillipines)
3.4 - what else are other people planning on putting here? i'd like to add something by gabby or atta, but haven't settled on a song yet, open to suggestions.
4.1 - still don't know here...
4.2 - Marta Sebestyen - "Harom Arva" (Hungary)
4.3 - Heather Jones - "Nos Ddu" (Wales)
4.4 - Nino Rota - "Amarcord" (Italy)
actually, i'd love to nominate Suba's beautiful "A Felicidade" but i'm not sure where it belongs. he was serbian, but by this time he was living and working in brazil, and the song probably belongs with others from this region, so in that case replace the Cantuaria song (otherwise, the Sebestyen one). thanks.
However, like Greg said, if someone who hasn't nominated for these regions yet really wants to nominate a song, let me know and we'll work something out.
I'll nominate the gorgeous Ett Enskilt Rum På Sabbatsberg by John Holm for 4.1, courtesy of Fred's great thread on Sweden.
I'm biased but I thought 4.1 would be one of the first to be filled. As a companion to Fred's list, here are some of my favorite Swedish songs, in chronological order:
Lars Gullin - Danny's Dream (since Nicolas changed his vote) (jazz)
Jojje Wadenius - Kalles klätterträd (children's music)
Pugh Rogefeldt - Här kommer natten (psychedelic rock)
Träd, gräs och stenar - Sanningens silverflod (psychedelic rock)
John Holm - Ett enskilt rum på Sabbatsberg (singer/songwriter)
Nationalteatern - Livet är en fest (folk rock)
Peps Blodsband - Hög standard (reggae)
Magnus Uggla - Varning på stan (pop punk)
Dag Vag - Dimma (punk)
Mikael Wiehe - Flickan och kråkan (singer/songwriter)
Adolphson & Falk - Blinkar blå (synth pop)
Lustans lakejer - Diamanter är en flickas bästa vän (new wave)
Ulf Lundell - Den vassa eggen (rock)
Eldkvarn - Kärlekens tunga (rock)
Di Leva - Vi har bara varandra (pop)
Lisa Ekdahl - Vem vet (singer/songwriter)
Bo Kaspers orkester - Puss (jazz pop)
Petter - Så klart! (hip hop)
Kaah - Dom tittar när jag dansar (soul/funk)
Detektivbyrån - E18 (folktronica)
The following songs are also among my favorites, however they are foreign songs that were rewritten with Swedish lyrics so maybe less interesting for this game:
Lill Lindfors - Du är den ende (pop)
Fred Åkerström - Jag ger dig min morgon (singer/songwriter)
2.1 Brazil
2.3 North/Central America
2.4 South America
3.1 East Asia (Japan China Korea Vietnam Mongolia)
4.1 to 4.4 : all Europe
However, like Stephan said, if someone who hasn't nominated for these regions yet really wants to nominate a song, let us know and we'll work something out.
Still open for people who have nominated less than 2 songs :
1.1 North Africa (1 song left)
1.3 Southern Africa (3 songs)
2.2 Caribbean (1 song left)
3.2 South Asia (3 songs left)
3.3 Southeast Asia (4 songs left)
3.4 Oceania (6 songs left)
Thanks for the list Mindrocker! I'm gonna need a few changes though. First, I can't accept 3 songs from 1.3, there's only place for 2. You'll have to pick two. Secondly, I can't accept 2 songs from 2.4, because we already have 15 songs. You'll have to pick one.
Yeah Henrik, that is acceptable. Feel free to nominate another round nicolas. Also, anyone can vote another time for 3.3 and 3.4 if they want to (that means you can vote twice for those, nic).
Nicolas, the bolded numbers are the ones that are different between the two of us; I'm not sure who of us is wrong, perhaps you counted hectorthebat's Motherjane?
Since there are already plenty nominations from Ethiopia and Congo you can omit Muluqen Mellesse and Bantous Jazz, and from the 2.4 section Joe Arroyo.
Also, can you please replace Carabao's Made In Thailand by the following song?
Looks like this game is stalling, and nominations aren't completely done.
There are still
1 song from region 3.2 (South Central Asia)
1 song from 3.3 (Southeast Asia)
4 songs from 3.4 (Oceania)
Stephan, what's your plan ?
I know it's not very easy to find music from these remote regions, but I'm posting many recommendations everyday in the recommendation thread
So is it time for a final round ? If you want I can nominate the rest of the songs. I'll try to post varied styles and not just folk stuff from before 1975
Sorry nic, I was just looking at this topic after not having a second of time this weekend. Since nobody has nominated any song over the weekend I'll let you fill the remaining spots; the alternative is likely one of us picking some of your recommendations.
I will try to get the first 8 songs uploaded today and get this thing going this week! I was thinking we should probably avoid running country to country as much as possible to get some distinctly different songs in each bracket. What do you think?
Edit: Or wait, we decided on 16 songs before. What do you think is better? It does distill things to 16 weeks rather than 32.
I think that avoiding country to country is better
And maybe you could do 1.1 then 2.1 then 3.1 ...
instead of doing Africa then America then Asia...
And why not do 8 songs a week ? It would give people more time to get into the songs (or post 16 songs every other week)
Yeah, that was my plan (1.1, 2.1, 3.1, etc.). I do think 8 is better than 16, it just makes for a rather long game. In any case, I'll just post the first 8 now while waiting for Greg to get back to me. I'll leave that song (and 7 others) for next week.
I'm not sure if that last song should be eligible to be honest; although it is gorgeous.
Do you have Dropbox? If so, are you using the email I have for you from the film polls? If not, could you set up an account there using that email address?
Edit: Or, I guess if the file isn't too large, you could just mail it.
