Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

BillAdama
I hope the indiephiles listen to it before just glancing at the top of the AM charts, rearranging it slightly and posting it.

Somebody called for me?

But in all seriousness, I've only heard 16 albums from 2009, and 9 of those 16 albums are from the top 10 of the year. I don't have a huge amount of time to track new releases, so I use the AM lists as a good guide on what to listen to. This might be seen as "critic pandering" by some, but I disagree. Of course I have some favorite bands whose albums I'll hear even if they don't place highly, but when it comes down to it the AM lists are my go to guide. I like most of what I hear, so I keep coming back.

In case you were wondering, here are the 2009 albums I've heard but didn't make my top 10 of the year.

Wilco (The Album)- Wilco
Embryonic- The Flaming Lips
Noble Beast- Andrew Bird
Fever Ray- Fever Ray
The Blueprint 3- Jay-Z
Tonight: Franz Ferdinand- Franz Ferdinand

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

BillAdama

11. Amadou & Mariam - Welcome To Mali

That is from 2009. AMers from the US, beware with African albums. They're often released earlier in Europe. You should look at their RYM release date.

Greg, I know you love "La Différence" by Salif Keita, that you placed in your 2010 list. It is a 2009 album.

Norway by Beach House is eligible. So don't forget to vote for it.
From the Ground by Broderick was my #10 in my new all time list. I highly recommend to all especially those who like 3/4 time signature (almost every song with vocals is 3/4) or likes the song I nominated in the songs poll.

La Superbe est le superbe!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

I can't stand Biolay's vocals. He should have left someone else do the singing.

Really? I don't find anything offensive. Close to Serge Gainsbourg I'd say.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Too close, but with a terrible affectation that maybe doesn't show for non French people

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Well Nicolas, you suddenly made me more critical about his voice and I realize that my comparison with Serge wasn't really fair. It's the half-singing style that is the most similar. I still love it though. Padam padam padam padam pam pam!

That would be me ! (and I also like many of the songs nominated).
My favorite song of 2009 is, once more, a 3/4 song. (like my 3 favorite songs ever, my number 1 from 1970, 1971, 1991, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2005 and the top 2 of 1997)

I find his voice much less affected (and annoying) than Vincent Delerm's. I'm not a huge fan of Biolay, but I do really enjoy La Superbe and Brandt Rhapsodie.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Yes, Delerm is worse, but I'm gonna try Biolay again

Petri:

I'm not in the business of asking you to do more work, but I'm wondering if a good supplemental thread could be a list of songs in the poll with the highest score and the least amount of votes.

I would be curious about a song or album that is really special to someone but no one else. We could have that person that was the sole vote talk about why they liked it.

Instead of giving more work to Petri, we could use the recommendation thread. Everytime there's a song I love and that is likely to get my only vote, I post it so people can hear it and maybe include it in their lists.
That could be an idea. In fact I don't understand why people don't use the recommendations threads that much. Lack of time ? Lazyness ? This forum is meant for sharing music I guess

@Stephan : The Wrestler is a 2008 single according to RYM

The Tinariwen album sounnds great, hope I'll have the time to include it.

BTW, sonofsamian, we'd love to see a list of yours in the Foreign World Cup thread.

We'd love to see everybody's nominations, so please everybody pay a visit to the thread, you don't have to vote for all the regions but just for one or two if you want !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Since I was not able not listen to music much in 2009 and 2010, I have a lot of catching up to do. Lots of great stuff though in 2009, neo-psychedelia and synth pop galore.

Animal Collective's album has some beautiful tracks, but I still can not listen to it entirely. The voice starts to irritate and too many annoying repetitions. Guess I'm still not ready for it ... maybe someday.

Hope to finish my lists before Wednesday, when a well deserved vacation and culture trip in Andalucia starts!

Nice. I'm also going on holiday for 3 weeks from Wednesday, to a remote part of South Africa without access to the internet, so I'm also trying to listen to as many albums and songs as possible before then.

Animal Collective isn't usually my kind of thing, but I love Merriweather and have listened to it about 30 times. I'll comment more about it when I post my list. For now, Benjamin Biolay's La superbe is keeping me company while I start packing (not sure what to make of it yet).

After discovering great rootsy music for the 2008 poll by the likes of The Tallest Man on Earth, Melingo and Hayes Carll, I wasn’t all that excited about listening to albums from 2009 when I noticed that the vast majority of the critics’ favourites were art pop and electronic music. Don’t get me wrong: I do like art pop and electronic music, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the music of 2009 seemed kinda limp and without oomph, and a bit pretentious and superficial.

But then I started listening to the albums and realised that it was silly of me to be so apprehensive and critical. It just so happened that the most interesting and forward-looking developments in music were in the fields of electronic music and pop, and just because it’s not rootsy doesn’t mean it’s superficial or pretentious (after all, this is 2009 we’re talking about, not 1939).

So I found myself feeling happy that Yeah Yeah Yeahs traded guitars for keyboards and went for a TV on the Radio production sound on It’s Blitz; Wild Beasts’ beautifully sensual, falsetto-driven Two Dancers delighted me; The xx’s debut sounded like a masterclass in how to make an understated, atmospheric pop album; and I was impressed by how natural and unforced Phoenix’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix sounded despite being so meticulously crafted.

But towering above all of it was Animal Collective’s weird yet accessible Merriweather Post Pavilion. When I listened to it for the first time in 2009 I was sligthly taken aback by the structure of the songs – or rather, by the lack of structure. While Animal Collective was a bit too weird for my liking before Merriweather Post Pavilion, their songs at least had a more familiar structure. But I made myself listen to it a few more times, and eventually I got used to the idea that looping “soundscapes” formed the basis of each song, instead of conventional structure. I’ve listened to it a lot since then, and after so many spins nothing about it sounds “experimental” to me anymore. Instead, what shines through time after time is childlike joy and exuberance – a sound that warms my heart and makes me want to sing and clap along to every song. It is an album that is exciting and energetic in a completely unique way, which makes it not only one of my favourite electronic albums but one of my all-time favourite albums of any genre.

Of course, there was more to 2009 than pop and electronic music. I liked the raw yet focused gangster rap of Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt. II, the infectious Congolese street music of Staff Benda Bilili’s Très très fort, and the rich and soulful jazz / New Orleans R&B of Allen Toussaint’s The Bright Mississippi, among others.

Special mention to Antony & The Johnsons, whose warm arrangements on The Crying Light are a million miles removed from the “coldness” of some of the acclaimed electronic albums. I know Antony Hegarty’s voice isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but to me it is an extraordinarily beautiful voice and he is one of very few performers whose singing makes me feel like he is actually exposing his soul, if that makes sense. And I think his voice and style of singing really compliment the emotional honesty of his lyrics.

It was a lot of fun to take part in these monthly polls for the 00s (thanks again Petri!). Bring on the 90s!

It might be the year of the decade with the less albums in my top 200, but overall it has a much larger variety of good albums than 2001 or 2008.
And really, what I like is how diverse this list is !

I'm one of the few who thinks that MPP is a letdown compared to Feels and Strawberry Jam, but it is still pretty great. I often see it called AC most accessible album which is an enigma to me, there's no doubt it is much more easy to like than Feels, I find Strawberry Jam simpler and more straight forward.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Hi Petri: after going through the songs lists of the first 10 voters (from Stephan to Michel), here are the results about non-eligible date of release so far (in alphabetical order):
1. Allen, Lily - The Fear: it seems that it was relased as a digital download on December 9, 2008 and later as a CD single on January 26, 2009. Not possible to confirm it in her official page but I've found several comments on December of 2008 from bloggers or users of, for instance, Amazon. AM background: we considered MGMT's "Oracular Spectacular" eligible for 2007 from a digital download previous to the physical release.
2. Fever Ray - If I Had a Heart: released as a CD single on December 15, 2008, got some votes last month as previously discussed.
3. and 4. Low Anthem, The - Charlie Darwin and Ticket Taker: these two songs are included on the band’s third album "Oh, My God, Charlie Darwin" that was, according both to Wikipedia and their official page, self-released on September 2, 2008 and later re-released on Bella Union label on June 9, 2009. AM background: we considered Bon Iver's "For Emma, For Ever Ago" eligible for 2007 from a self-release.
5. Springsteen, Bruce - The Wrestler: released as a digital file on December 16, 2008, got some votes last month as previously discussed.
6. Temper Trap, The - Sweet Disposition: released as an EP only in Australia on September 16, 2008 and, according to Wikipedia, re-recorded and later released as a single worldwide on July 6, 2009. This information is not available at their official page. AM background: The La's "There She Goes Again" or (again) MGMT's "Time to Pretend" second versions were considered eligible because these versions were the ones that received the acclaim, so maybe "Sweet Disposition" could be considered eligible for 2009 after all.
7. YACHT - It's Boring / You Can Live Anywhere You Want: released as part of the album "See Mystery Lights" on August 2009 but previously appeared as B-side of 12" Summer Song on September 30, 2008 although it can't be confirmed on their official page (I mean, Summer Song was released on 2008 but the official page does not include the name of the B-side).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Honorio
Hi Petri: after going through the songs lists of the first 10 voters (from Stephan to Michel), here are the results about non-eligible date of release so far (in alphabetical order):

Hi Honorio and thanks a lot for huge work (and also thanks to nicolas and all the others as well for pointing out not eligible songs and albums).
I've even voted for two of these not eligible songs (Charlie Darwin + The Fear).

I agree that we can use the MGMT and The LA's-card (although There She Goes is nowadays a 1988 song in AM) and keep the Sweet Disposition eligible (still I try to listen to the original 2008 version today).
Luckily none of those not-eligible songs weren't top 100 finalist material (not even The Fear).
SO not eligible songs are:
Allen, Lily - The Fear
Fever Ray - If I Had a Heart
Girls, The - Lust for Life
Low Anthem, The - Charlie Darwin and Ticket Taker
Springsteen, Bruce - The Wrestler
YACHT - It's Boring / You Can Live Anywhere You Want

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

With The Fear out of the picture, that gives me a chance to let Destroyer's Bay of Pigs slip in, which is just coming into heavy rotation for me.

I agree that we can use the MGMT and The LA's-card (although There She Goes is nowadays a 1988 song in AM) and keep the Sweet Disposition eligible (still I try to listen to the original 2008 version today).

I listened the original version. It sounded the same than the 09 version (I'm not sure is there any difference (I didn't listen the "new" version today)). So Sweet Disposition isn't eligible.

So I lose my #1 single because of an EP released only in Australia. It is getting to the point where you need clarification before the month starts, it is too late to revote for 2008. Next thing you know someone will claim a demo tape was leaked on the internet from the year before...

I actually don't care if the song has some commonly unknown release before the discovery (I even voted for two songs that were released in 2008 because I didn't check more carefully when they were released).
Nevertheless I have removed the songs and albums that have been already in the final (MGMT and Bon Iver got suprinsigly lot votes in 08 poll). And if someone have pointed out or I have noticed that something is from wrong year, I have checked that correction is correct and removed it (Beach House album Teen Dream is from 2010).
I think that the most important thing is that songs that are potential finalists have fair chance to get to final (for example Girls and Vampire Weekend songs were singly nominated because their potential final status). Also we decided that Ignition (remix) was eligible in 03 poll (unless augurus proved that it was released in 02 and voted it then) and Kids + Time to Pretend were 07 songs (unless many knew they were originally released in 05).
I don't think you lose your #1. Sweet Disposition have gained now much more notice than it would have without Honorio's and my posts. Nevertheless I can count your 50 points (& Depeche Mode's one point) if you want. If we have tie I check if removing the song will change the results.

Sorry for contributing to this situation, maybe (as Petri suggested) we can keep the votes for this song and see what to do if it gets to the Top 10. Anyway as I can see you already changed your list.
Anyway it's funny that you mention the Internet leaks, in fact we had an issue about that with Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" no less (#3 of the 2000s with the new update), leaked on the Internet in late 2005. And this year too, Animal Collective's "Brother Sport" was leaked on the Internet on November of 2008. And seeing this Forum, where the new releases by your favourite artists are commented weeks before the official release, it seems that now the "real" date of release is the day of the leak. I don't "use" these Internet leaks, I don't feel the need of being the first to listen to something. But that's something that is happening. As I can see, the last five years are being a nightmare for tracing dates of release, with multiplicity of releases: digital downloads, self-releases, free streaming on webpages and blogs, etc. The improvement on accesibility due to the Internet and the "democratization" of distribution of music is going to drive crazy to all of the nerds like us.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Hey, nicolas, many thanks for voting for Gent del Desert. But I'm not going to vote for us (now I'm a full time member of the band). And not because I think we don't deserve being on the list (of course we do! ) but beacuse I don't feel comfortable voting for my own band. Mais merci beaucoup une autre fois, mon pote.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

While I put (the underated) "Hold Time" above "xx" on my all-time list now I've decided to change their positions, maybe for sentimental reasons. The xx's debut album was a favourite for Mar and Miguel (my kids) during 2010. My daughter Mar got quickly dissapointed when she saw them on You Tube (she expected them to look much more glamourous I suppose). But Miguel (10 year-old then) continued asking me to play it again and again in the car. One day when I was driving him to school he asked me:
- Daddy, is this album the best album ever?
- Nope, at least not for me. Is that for you? – I said – Is it your favourite album?
- Oh, yes, it is.
- Oh, my son – I replied with the typical condescending daddy smile (but proud on the inside) – you still need to listen to a lot of music to reach to this kind of conclusions. And, you'll see, you are going to enjoy it a lot.
So, Miguel, here they are, the xx at the top of the list in your honour.

My favourite Spanish song of 2009: Francisco Nixon's "Erasmus borrachas"

Spanish bands singing in English? Well, there is no doubt, English is the language of pop and rock music. And it's not only for its US-UK origin but also for the language itself. English uses shorter words than other languages (especially the Latin-based ones), even with a lot of monosyllables, being more suitable for pop and rock music. As an example, the line "Stark sharp glass-eyed crack and peel" (taken from the King Crimson song "Pictures of a City") would be in Spanish "Descarnados y afilados ojos vidriosos, agrietados y despellejados", so 23 syllabes in Spanish versus only 7 in English (I know, I know, I've chosen the most extreme example).
That's maybe (along with the aspiration to achieve resonance outside their home countries) almost every non-English speaking country has bands that chose English for their songs, from ABBA to Can, from Phoenix to Sepultura. Spain was no different in that, except in the fact that the English-singing bands obtained little success outside Spain (with some notable exceptions) and that the main reason for chosing the English was the desire to sound the most similar possible to their influences. The first generation that used the English was the one of the late 60s and early 70s prog-rock (the previous generation succeeded translating the pop-rock hits to Spanish, at the time Los Mustang sold more records than The Beatles with their versions in Spanish of the Fab Four). The first ones daring to sing in English were Los Bravos, that achieved a smash hit worldwide with their "Black Is Black", followed by many other bands of different styles like soul-rock (Los Canarios, Los Pop Tops), latin funk (Barrabás) or especially prog-rock (Máquina! or Smash). During the second half of the 70s (marked by singer-songwriters and roots-rock) and the whole decade of the 80s (the golden age of Spanish pop) almost no one sang in English again. But the next generation, the indie-pop and noise-rock bands, used the English massively (probably as a reaction against the 80s movida sound). Coming mostly from Asturias (on the North of Spain), bands like Australian Blonde, Penelope Trip or Manta Ray opened a path that many bands travelled since then, bands of many different styles like indie-pop (Sexy Sadie, Sunday Drivers, Unfinished Sympathy), hardcore (Aina, Standstill, Corn Flakes), slowcore (Migala, Polar, Ten Thousand Islands), folk-pop (Aroah, Siwel), weird folk (Remate, Bigott), downtempo (Bergman, NawjaJean) or dance (Delorean, An Der Beat).
But within a few years almost every artist from these pioneering bands of the 90s abandoned the English to embrace his own language in order to obtain the possibility of express their feelings more honestly and more closeness with their natural audience. Nacho Vegas from Manta Ray, Abel González from Migala, Raül Fernández from Corn Flakes, Tito Pintado from Penelope Trip and, of course, Fran Fernández (later Francisco Nixon) took that way at some point in the new decade. Fran fronted Australian Blonde from 1993 to 2004, a band that was one of the most popular of a quite subterranean scene, being responsible of the unofficial anthem of this generation with the song "Chup Chup" (1993), included in their first album "Pizza Pop" (1993) and in the soundtrack of the movie "Historias del Kronen" (1995) directed by Montxo Armendáriz (supposedly the ultimate movie of the 90s indie generation but not recognized as that by its protagonists). In my opinion the most interesting of their seven albums is their fifth, "Momento" (2000), recorded with Steve Wynn.
But an unseen side of Francisco Nixon showed up when he decided to team for a side band with Sergio Algora, another ex-member of a lauded indie-pop band, El Niño Gusano. This band was called La Costa Brava and supposed a breath of fresh air with its sheer sense of humour, its luminous pop sound and its use of the Spanish. The good ambiance and chemistry between Sergio and Fran rendered 5 albums in only 3 years but ended abruptely after the unexpected death of Sergio Algora when he was only 39 years old. Fran began then a solo career under the pseudonym of Francisco Nixon following the path of his previous project with similar results on his two albums so far. I'm not the only one preferring the second side of his career, Miguel (the other Spanish AMer) and me talked about it when we met in Oviedo (Miguel, I know I owe you some comments at the Forum about our meeting, please wait a little more). I've selected "Erasmus borrachas" ("Drunken Erasmus") from his second solo album, "El perro es mío" ("The Dog Is Mine", 2009), because somehow it shows the typical Spanish attitude about European girls, half voyeuristic ("You are the first one running to watch them") half romantic Don Juan ("We are going to escape to a warm place"). Note for the Americans: "Erasmus" refers to a program that allow European students go to Universities in other European countries. But the main reason for the Erasmus students to come to Spain is not academic, they come looking for sun, easy life and parties at night. That why every young Spanish knows what Francisco Nixon is talking about when he describes in his song those drunken girls wearing sandals and lifting their skirts.

ERASMUS BORRACHAS
Composer: Francisco Javier Fernández Martínez
Performer: FRANCISCO NIXON
First release: 2009 ("El perro es mío" album)
Length: 2'53"

Fue un pasatiempo,
un capricho, poco más,
después amanecí
dormido en un portal.

Erasmus borrachas
que llevan sandalias,
y tú vas corriendo
el primero a mirarlas.

Y bailamos sin hablar
(oh, no)
y nos vamos a escapar
a un clima cálido.
We are having so much fun
(oh, no)
reflejábamos la luz
de nuestro alrededor.

Salí buscando
un poco de conversación
(de esto y lo otro)
y por casualidad
terminé en aquel café
(algo no habitual).

Erasmus borrachas
levantan la falda,
y tú vas corriendo
a ver si te cansas.

Y bailamos sin hablar
(oh, no)
y nos vamos a escapar
a un clima cálido.
We are having so much fun
(oh, no)
reflejábamos la luz
de nuestro alrededor.

Y bailamos sin hablar
(oh, no)
y nos vamos a escapar
a un clima cálido.
We are having so much fun
(oh, no)
reflejábamos la luz
de nuestro alrededor.

DRUNKEN ERASMUS

It was a pastime,
a whim, little more,
then I woke up
slept in a doorway.

Drunken Erasmus
wearing sandals,
and you're the first one
running to watch them.

And we danced without talking
(oh, no)
and we are going to escape
to a warm place.
We are having so much fun
(oh, no)
we reflected the light
around us.

I went out looking
for some conversation
(about this and about that)
and by chance
I ended up in that café
(something not usual)

Drunken Erasmus
lifting their skirts,
and you go running,
let's see if you get tired.

And we danced without talking
(oh, no)
and we are going to escape
to a warm place.
We are having so much fun
(oh, no)
we reflected the light
around us.

And we danced without talking
(oh, no)
and we are going to escape
to a warm place.
We are having so much fun
(oh, no)
we reflected the light
around us.

Re: My favourite Spanish song of 2009: Francisco Nixon's "Erasmus borrachas"

Honorio
But the next generation, the indie-pop and noise-rock bands, used the English massively (probably as a reaction against the 80s movida sound).

7. PENELOPE TRIP Crescendo (1994), probably my #1 of this Top 10 if it was in order of preference

Indeed, in Spain, many music critics felt that there was much abuse in the use of English by many bands in the nineties. In addition, many of them had a rather limited knowledge of English. This is very common in my country; unfortunately there are very few people who, like Honorio, speak English fluently.

Anyway, I think there were many very good albums in that language.

(By the way. It would be interesting to make a thread with favourite English songs of the countries of non Anglo-Saxon AMers)

A clarification: Crescendo, by Penelope Trip, - the same as all the songs from their first two albums, "Politomanía" and "Usted morirá en su nave espacial" (You Will Die in Your Spaceship) - is not really sung in English, but in a kind of invented language that resembles English. Obviously, the singer was aware of his limitations.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

It's kinda awkward to only post a top 6 list of albums in this last installment of the yearly polls, but I rarely listened to whole new albums in 2009 and I unfortunately didn't catch up much at all this month. I don't think 2009 is a bad year though, I really love my top 20 songs.

Petri

According to Moonbeam and RYM those are two separate albums. So I'm not sure how I give points to them.

It's somewhat tricky. Prince released a 3-CD set in 2009 collectively called LotusFlow3r. One of the CDs itself is called LotusFlow3r (which is what I'm guessing Romain is referring to), another is called MPLSoUND and the third is a disc by protege Bria Valente called Elixer.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Ah crap, I forgot about Norway. Don't think it will make a difference, but might as well.

New addition:

8. Beach House - Norway

If you could just move everything behind it down, that would be great. Thanks, Petri.

It's amazing this year-long journey through the 2000s has come to a close. I hadn't listened nearly enough to albums from this decade before this year, only scraping the surface with highly acclaimed albums that are well-known around here. Now I've heard at least 20-25 albums from each year of the decade, and there's no other decade I can say that about. It is really satisfying to get to know a single year of music really well, though I found myself wishing there was more time at the end of each month to hear more.

As far as my list goes, I find this is one of the years where I differ the most from the critical consensus. Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear don't do it for me. Broadcast and the Focus Group made the true psychedelic masterpiece of the year, an album that was obtuse to me at first but slowly revealed its magic after numerous listens. I highly recommend the Cold Cave album, the most pleasant surprise of the month for me.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Songs:

01 | The Roots | How I Got Over
02 | Cold Cave | Life Magazine
03 | Portishead | Chase the Tear
04 | Antlers | Bear

06 | Phoenix | Lisztomania

17 | Telepathe | In Your Line
18 | Sunn O))) | Agartha
19 | Broadcast and the Focus Group | The Be Colony
20 | Dinosaur Jr. | Pieces

Not the strongest year at the top, but there were some great gems and discoveries. Not sure why "Life Magazine" didn't gain more traction among indie sites.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Go Bat for Lashes! So glad that both Two Suns and "Daniel" made the cut. Sorry that Annie didn't have a better showing, though.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Ok let's forget about that terrible year and this 100% indie top 10 and move on to the next stage (which may be at least 80 % indie).
You want my opinion ? That is just ridiculous.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Not to be contrarian, but the 11-20 section for both albums and songs is better than 1-10, particularly on the albums side. The xx beating AC is a nice surprise though.

You got it. That's why we have to change the rules for the 90s poll. Take 15 albums and maybe establish quotas

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Yeah, I would so love to see Fits and Actor in that top ten.

I'm surprised The XX beat out MPP for #1. That's one album whose appeal I just don't get, I find it generally mediocre. And I really, really tried to like it.

@Nicolas

My suggestion for the 90's poll was top 12 + highest non-Anglophone + top 2 not already in based on highest 3 votes.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Bah, I had an extra numbered entry for Bear In Heaven's Wholehearted Mess. If it weren't there, Rain Machine's Give Blood would have been number 50.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

I would be interested in seeing the entire list of songs and albums from the poll if possible.

I check is there any way to avoid the tiebreak...

Edit. OK I rechecked the results and looks like it's time for tiebreak again.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Miguel
A clarification: Crescendo, by Penelope Trip, - the same as all the songs from their first two albums, "Politomanía" and "Usted morirá en su nave espacial" (You Will Die in Your Spaceship) - is not really sung in English, but in a kind of invented language that resembles English. Obviously, the singer was aware of his limitations.

Well, you're right, probably I should not have included Penelope Trip in my list because they did not sang in real English but in "watchu-wari", I mean, something that sounds like English but it's not. Let me say that many bands (not only in Spain) use this watchu-wari in the rehearsals to find the melody of a given song during the process of composition, later some lyrics that suits the melody (in English or Spanish) are added but Tito Pintado opted for not making a real lyric. Quite bizarre, isn't it?

Eligibility:
The songs voted by the last 12 voters rendered quite a lot of questionable dates of release (but none of them were above "Keep the Streets Empty for Me" or "Stillnes Is the Move" so this changes does not affect the tie-breaker now running in another thread):
- Fredo Viola - The Turn: the album version (the one voted by nicolas) was released as the opener of the album The Turn as "The Turn (A Pagan Lament)" on March 16, 2009 but it appeared on a different version on a previous EP, Red States on December 1, 2008 as "The Turn (Fink Remix)". You can confirm his dates on the news section of the Fredo Viola official page. So we have another case of a different version released the year before. Probably eligible, isn't it?
- Anthony Joseph & the Spasm Band - Véro: released opening the album Bird Head Son on January 13, 2009 but previously released as the main song of the EP La diablesse on July 2008.
- Martyn - Natural Selection: released as part of the album Great Lenghts on April 20, 2009 but previously released as the main song of the EP 12" on July 7, 2008, confirmed on two other web pages.
- The xx - VCR (Matthew Dear Remix): although the original version of "VCR" was released as part of the album xx on August 17, 2009, it seems that the remix by Matthew Dear was first released on early January, this seems to be confirmed by the Pitchfork review.
- Lee Fields & The Expressions - Money I$ King: I'm not sure about if it's the same version, but this song released as part of the album My World on June 2, 2009 was previously released as the B-side of the single These Moments in 2005. The only page that mention too this previous release is Wikipedia so I can't be absolutely sure.
- Metric - Help I'm Alive: it seems that this song, released as first single from their album "Fantasies" was released in Canada on December 23, 2008 and later on the US on January 1, 2009. The only source that date it like that is Wikipedia, so probably we should consider it 2009. Moreover only a week before 2009 and only in Canada is going to far in my (our) nerdism. Or not?
- The Bad Plus joined by Wendy Lewis - Barracuda: part of the album For All I Care released in Europe on October 13, 2008 and in the US on February 3, 2009. The official MySpace page seems to confirm this October 2008 release.
- Passion Pit - Sleepyhead: released as part of the album Manners on May 18, 2009 but previously released as their first single on September 8, 2008 and also on their EP Chunk of Change, double checked on their official page.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2009

Ordering the albums for the 00s poll I realized that 2009 was the year with less degree of personal agreement with the rest of the Forum (7 albums of the Top 10 were not on my Top 20), while during the rest of the decade I had a high level of correlation.
Albums on the global Top 10 that were not on my Top 20s:
2000: 4
2001: 0
2002: 2
2003: 1
2004: 3
2005: 4
2006: 3
2007: 2
2008: 3
2009: 7
I would not dare to say that 2009 was a bad year for music (I really like the albums on my Top 20) but I definitely don't like the trendy sounds of that year, a quite indigestible mélange of annoying rhythms, enervating synths and unappealing voices, at least to my ears.
