Re: DIVISIONS: Week 8

David Bowie (“Heroes”): 8
The Beatles (Hey Jude): 2

Good matchup of what may be these artists' biggest anthems. "'Heroes'" wins in a landslide.

Radiohead (Creep): 7
The Rolling Stones (Brown Sugar): 5

Like it was for most people, "Creep" was my introduction to Radiohead. In spite of my general apathy toward 90s music, something about it resonated with me, and still does. "Brown Sugar" is good for what it is, but I don't particularly care for it.

Bob Dylan (Blowin’ in the Wind): 1
Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven): 1

3 minutes of torture beats 8 minutes of torture.

Prince (Kiss): 9
Elvis Presley (Heartbreak Hotel): 4

Sparse funk or 50s rockabilly? No contest. Ever.

Bruce Springsteen (Dancing in the Dark): 8
The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations): 6

"Dancing in the Dark" is unsurprisingly my favorite Bruce Springsteen song, as it is perfectly 80s. "Good Vibrations" is an important song, but not one that excites me.

Jimi Hendrix (Purple Haze): 8
The Who (I Can See for Miles): 2

So far, I enjoy my least favorite Hendrix song more than my favorite Who song.

U2 (One): 8
The Velvet Underground (Rock and Roll): 6

"One" is one of U2's finest ballads. "Rock & Roll" is good by the low standards set by Loaded, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.

Marvin Gaye (Let’s Get It On): 6
Neil Young (Heart of Gold): 3

Both of these artists have songs I enjoy a lot more than these.

The Clash (London Calling): 10
R.E.M. (The One I Love): 7

My favorite Clash song easily takes down my favorite R.E.M. song.

Nirvana (Come As You Are): 9
Bob Marley (No Woman No Cry): 0

Blowout of the week. "Come As You Are" has always been thrilling with that murky groove, while "No Woman No Cry" has long been one of my least favorite songs ever.

Stevie Wonder (Higher Ground): 10
The Smiths (This Charming Man): 7

Stevie's blistering funk is far too much for early Smiths to stand a chance, fine as it is.

Elvis Costello (Alison): 7
Pink Floyd (Arnold Layne): 5

I think I prefer Pink Floyd helmed by Syd Barrett. Still, "Arnold Layne" is easily outpaced by what I'd view as a standard-level Elvis Costello song.

Talking Heads (Burning Down the House): 8
The Byrds (Mr. Tambourine Man): 4

Between this game and the World Cup, I've heard 5 Byrds songs, and given them scores of 4, 5, 5, 5 and 6. That's about as meh as it gets. Talking Heads are very rarely meh, and "Burning Down the House" is only meh when compared to the other treats available on Speaking in Tongues, my favorite TH album.

The Doors (Light My Fire): 9
Aretha Franklin (I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You): 6

That thrilling middle segment lifts "Light My Fire" quite a bit in my estimation. "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You" is pretty good, but it still falls well short here.

Public Enemy (Fight the Power): 7
Van Morrison (Into the Mystic): 6

Close, close matchup. The energy of "Fight the Power" gives it a slight edge.

The Kinks (All Day and All of the Night): 8
Johnny Cash (I Walk the Line): 2

My appreciation for The Kinks grows by the day. Cash has no chance here.

James Brown (I Got You (I Feel Good)): 5
Creedence Clearwater Revival (Proud Mary): 5

Two songs that were drilled into my head as a kid, and I couldn't be more apathetic to either. Both artists have much better offerings.

Michael Jackson (Rock With You): 8
Beck (Loser): 1

"Loser" was my introduction to Beck, and I loathed him for quite some time because of it. Thankfully, other tracks have redeemed him somewhat, but "Loser" is still quite a dud for me, and it has no chance against Michael Jackson shooting 1979-par with "Rock with You".

Roxy Music (Virginia Plain): 10
Pixies (Where Is My Mind?): 5

"Virginia Plain" is positively electrifying and exhibits that sound that places Roxy Music among my top 15 artists. "Where Is My Mind?" is intriguing enough, but Frank Black's vocals always get in the way of Pixies songs for me.

Otis Redding (Tramp): 5
Sonic Youth (Teen Age Riot): 5

I'm a bit hit or miss with Sonic Youth, and "Teen Age Riot" is a miss for me. Then again, so is "Tramp", but it's a fair bit shorter.

Blur (Song 2): 9
Lou Reed (Sweet Jane (Live)): 7

The live rendition of "Sweet Jane" does lift its rating, but not enough to compete with the 2-minute supernova of "Song 2".

The Cure (Just Like Heaven): 9
Kraftwerk (Die Roboter): 9

Very, very close matchup here. Both are bettered by a few tracks on their respective albums, but "Just Like Heaven" is a tad more special for me.

Tom Waits (Innocent When You Dream): 7
Joni Mitchell (A Case of You): 6

"Innocent When You Dream" is quite pretty, and so is "A Case of You", but it is slightly less engaging.

The White Stripes (Seven Nation Army): 8
Ramones (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg): 7

This was my first time hearing a Ramones track from the 80s. It was a lot better than I was expecting! Despite generally preferring Ramones to The White Stripes, I can't deny the heft of that riff in "Seven Nation Army".

i happen to love both, but that's still a great comment.
