Great start for Silent Shout (the song). I hope it can continue like this.

I expect the top 3 to stay the same.
I don't see the Sisters repeating their performance, but I would be happy with the other 9 making it to the final round.

On the album side, it should be an easy win for the Knife, TV on the Radio, Arctic Monkeys and Joanna Newsom but it seems quite open after that (the other 6 on our 2010 poll top 10 being Ghostface Killah, Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse, Bob Dylan, Belle and Sebastian and Liars, but the Hold Steady, Beirut and Hot Chip were not far behind and the Fratellis and Prince had some strong support...)

I'm gonna vote for Alela Diane's The Pirate Gospel as a 2006 album, although RYM has it as from 2004. But if you read the first words of the AMG link above, you'll realize why. (it was realeased in 2004 as a self-produced CD-R and properly issued by a record company in 2006)
As nobody voted for it in 2004 and in case somebody wants to hear it (it is a good neo-folk record) I hope it is ok with you Petri.

I re-listened to this the other day and was reminded of just how amazing it is. Sounds like a mix of the best aspects of Radiohead and Can. Hope it can make it from a pretty solid year.

It's a fine folk record with an expressive voice driving it. I really enjoyed "To Be Still" more released in 2009, but will give this another shot. Didn't listen to her new album, yet.

I could swear there was a question about Robyn's "With Every Heartbeat" and Studio's "West Coast/Yearbook 1", but I don't see it now. Anyway...

Studio released the album "West Coast" in 2006 and it got a wider release as "Yearbook 1" in 2007 with a couple of early singles added. In the same way that "Robyn" was regarded a 2005 album, I think we should list "West Coast" this month in the 2006 lists. And we should!

However, I don't know why I have "With Every Heartbeat" as a 2006 song on AM. Perhaps some critics heard it and listed it already that year, like Pitchfork listed "Crazy" in 2005? Anyway, I think we should list it next month in the 2007 lists. And we should!

I think he means that the albums at the top of the AM list have a huge advantage over those that aren't, simply because those have been listened to by more people, which shuts out those that might be called "hidden gems". Which has surely always been the case, with every year before this?

I’ll try Orphans again. But maybe this time I’ll listen to just one of the 3 albums at a time. I like Tom Waits – I like his raspy voice and his distinctive (over-the-top?) interpretation of roots music. But I hadn’t heard Orphans before listening to it a couple of months ago for this poll and I listened to it all in one sitting. And after 3 hours of raw theatrical music and him bellowing in that gravelly voice my brain felt kinda fried, and I if I remember correctly it wasn’t a particularly pleasant sensation. But unlike 3-hour films, maybe 3-hour albums aren’t necessarily meant for one continuous listen when you want to decide whether you like it or not. I think if I listen to Orphans in smaller doses I’ll probably appreciate more how Waits twists and bends various genres of traditional music with a creativity that is unique to him and him alone.

I don’t want to be a spoilsport, Honorio, but Long Way Home was first released on the Big Bad Love soundtrack in 2002. I love that song too. I first heard it as a very decent cover by Norah Jones on her Feels Like Home album and when I heard the Tom Waits original I was disappointed that I didn’t know about it when we did the 2002 poll. So I’m not sure if it’s eligible – unless we play the “but no one knew it was actually from a different year” card.



Every year I seem to end up having at least 5 albums in my top 10 in common with the AM top 10, whether I start listening from the top of the AM list or in the “bubbling under” section or with the highest rated albums from Mali on RYM or whatever. But just when I was about to get paranoid that I’m a whore for the critics and don’t have enough of an individual taste in music, I remembered that it’s critics’ job to sift through all the crap music out there and highlight the intelligent and engaging ones. And a lot of the music that end up on AM is pretty damn good. Of course, the critics’ lists don’t necessarily include a great variety of genres (in the 00s, for example, the focus seems to be primarily on indie, electronic and hip-hop from the US and UK). But fortunately sites like RYM exist for exploring other genres; and what’s even more fortunate is that people on this forum have a varied taste in music, so there are often underrated gems lurking in individual lists.

I guess because plenty of us use AM as the preferred source for discovering good music, many of the albums on AM’s lists will also show up on our individual lists. I had a look through the lists of the 40 people who took part in the 2005 albums poll last month and worked out that on average each individual top 10 had 4 albums in common with the top 10 on AM for 2005. So it’s no wonder that we ended up with a final list that had 9 albums in common with the AM top 10. But as many have commented before, looking at (and delving into) individual lists is often more exciting and rewarding than seeing the overall results. That said, it’s obviously amusing to see how people criticize and defend songs and albums that make it through to the final round. I for one overreacted completely when people criticized Crazy in Love, and I’m sure I’ll stir emotions in a few other people when I say that the two fucking Sleater-Kinney albums that have made it through so far will be my #99 and #100 in the final round.

I’m stating the obvious here, but felt like stating it anyway.

I should have said the same but with The Knife and the XX (they'll probably pass in 2009) instead of SK (SK will only be 97 and 98 no I'm kidding)

S-K's two albums will be top 30 material for me, but even if you didn't like them, there are some far more offensive albums that have made it through. U2, Coldplay, Eminem, the Streets, Bright Eyes...

About Orphans Yes, maybe you should try to listen to the 3 discs separately. After all, very few people saw the 3 Lord of the Rings movies in one sitting !
IMO it's a great gift from Tom Waits, but if you're not a devoted TW fan like me this triple album is not the right place to start. Like you said it's too big. But that's why I love it. So many great songs left behind !
There are wonderful and very varied songs, including unexpected ones like "Road to Peace", Tom's first (and only ?) try at straightforward political comment (about Israeli/Palestine war), or the great spoken pieces in disc 3, especially "Army Ants" (I love the way he prnounces "wasps"). And many more conventional TW gems such as "Widow's Grove", "Fannin Street" (one of 3 tributes to Leadbelly) or "Little Drop of Poison".

And did you try Tumi & The Volume ? They're a great South African, multiracial rap group, but they are mostly known in France (especially now that they've signed with a French label in La Réunion island). In my starting list they were #2 but I've overrated them a bit. After a new listen they will go down to the middle of my list but it's still a very solid album.

Add Dylan's Thunder On The Mountain as my #10 please, and add Waits' Orphans as my #11.

Yes, I’ve listened to Tumi & The Volume recently (because it’s on your list). I like it – it sounds fresh and different. I was surprised to find out that they're from South Africa – I’ve never heard of them and the “African” rhythms and arrangements sounds a little more West African than South African to my ears. They somehow also remind me of The Roots, although they are perhaps not quite as consistent as The Roots. Most of the album works really well though, and the song What’s It All About should probably have been in my top 20 for the year (I might annoy Petri with an updated songs list later in the month).

I don't get that point. Does it just mean that you don't like those albums ?

Somewhat surprised by the lack of Dubstep in the lists so far. By far the most important and cutting-edge development in Electronica during the '00s, and 2006 was the year Dubstep emerged from the underground gaining wider acclaim. This makes it my favourite year of the whole decade (Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere is another reason).

Talking about "Bravo" is talking about three giants. Or should I say four. First of all, let me introduce Bambino, not the singer nor the composer of the song but the performer of a passionate version released on 1967 that (no doubt) served as the main inspiration for Bunbury & Vegas. Bambino was a controversial singer, he was forced to hide his homosexuality (an unforgivable sin especially being a gypsy and more especially during Franco regime in Spain) and maybe beacuse of that tinged all his performances with rawness and character. Musically he took back to Andalusia the Barcelona rumba and deepened in its Latin American roots (like Cuban son or Mexican bolero) and in the classic Spanish copla (he recorded a lot of material from poet Rafael de León, also homosexual).
The other two giants I was talking about were two singers-songwriters of very different backgrounds that unexpectedly (and brilliantly in my opinion) decided to join forces. Enrique Bunbury is probably one of the most popular rock stars in Spain and Latin America. As leader of the band Los Héroes del Silencio (The Heroes of Silence) during the late 80s and early 90s he gained a devoted following not only in Spain, since the band even sold more than 200.000 copies in Germany of their Phil Manzanera-produced second album Senderos de traición (Paths of Betrayal, 1990). But this popularity was inversely proportional to the despise (or overtly hate) of many rock critics that bashed them for their grandiloquence. He began to slowly gain some critical respect with his solo career, especially with his third solo album "Flamingos" (2002).
Nacho Vegas traveled the opposite path till he meet Bunbury at some point in the middle of their respective ways. From the very beginning Nacho was a critics darling since his early days as a member of bands like Eliminator Jr. (noise-pop, named after a Sonic Youth song) or Manta Ray (slowcore, named after a Pixies song). Manta Ray (1995), the first album of that second band was considered by Rockdelux the #2 Spanish album of the year. His solo career began in 2001 to critical acclaim (his first three albums were always on the first positions on end-of-year lists on Rockdelux or Mondo Sonoro despite never breaking into mainstream audiences). Influenced by Leonard Cohen, Steve Van Zandt or Nick Drake, he stood out as a notable songwriter of dark and emotional lyrics.
The reasons for this meeting at the top are easily understandable: Enrique Bunbury was looking for a credibility that Vegas seemed to have it guaranteed and Nacho Vegas was looking for a wider audience that Bunbury also seemed to have it guaranteed. But one thing not so understandable was the approach they chose for their first and last (double) album together, "El tiempo de las cerezas" ("The Season of the Cherries", 2006). It was recorded in fact as two solo albums, Bunbury and Vegas sang and wrote individually every song, with only a songwriter collaboration ("Látex") and a cover ("Bravo"). Moreover, the album sequence with every individual song next to each other, with every Vegas song followed by a Bunbury one (while at the end of every album one covered a song by the other) made way to see it as a competition. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe this competitive approach (quite unusual in these kind of collaborative albums) is what makes me like this album so much.
And who was the winner? Well, seeing from the point of view of the fans of every artist (probably there were few fans of both before this album), for sure they saw his idol as the easy winner. Being myself not the biggest fan of any of them (but probably you should file me on Vegas' side), in my opinion while Bunbury was maybe a better singer and performer his abilities as songwriter (especially his overblown lyrics) paled a lot as compared to Vegas'. But I should point the fact that Bunbury put himself in a difficult position, he risked much more than Vegas here.
The cohesive factor was the excellent band behind. Especially, and here it comes the fourth giant, Paco Loco. Paco was the talented engineer and producer behind the Xixon Sound, the sound of Spain during the 90s coming from a bunch of indie bands (including manta Ray) that arised on Asturias, on the North Spanish coast. Relocated on Cádiz, on the South Spanish Coast, he has expanded his horizons including productions for American artists like Steve Wynn or Josh Rouse. A prodution by Paco Loco is now synonymous of solidness and quality. Just listen to what he did with "Bravo". Forgetting about its origins as a Mexican bolero (it was written by Mexican composer Luis Demetrio) and also about Bambino's flamenco cover (see above) he dared to board it like, let's say, a mix of "Because" and "Creep". A cathartic sound apt for one of the most intenses hate songs ever: "I hate you so much / that I got myself scared / about my way of hating".

I was starting to feel a little lonely in my appreciation of this album. I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes it.

I remember someone once commenting that M. Ward should take it easy on the helium. But I like how he sounds a bit otherworldly – on this album his voice both contrasts and compliments the carefree and sunny nature of the music and the spirited production (even if the lyrics are often the polar opposite of cheery). It sounds as if M. Ward and his band/musicians feel like jammin’ because jammin’ is fun, yet their style of jammin’ is everything but slapdash. I like that.

I'm glad you liked it, Dan M. In fact I just recently realized (well in fact I searched about it in Google) that the reference to Katy Jurado with the back clouds behind came from the Sam Peckimpah film (with the immortal Dylan soundtrack).
About the Van Zandt song I must admit I never heard that song until I saw it mentioned on the lyrics of the Nacho Vegas song back in 2006. I looked then in You Tube and that was it, with the black man crying (that brought tears to my eyes too). Now this song is a favourite of mine (it was in my 1968 list).
These are the advantages of the musicians that are also music nerds (just like Nacho Vegas).

Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill and Sparklehorse deserve a nod for great consistency.

Great year, though it also the year I have been betrayed by what was then one of my favorite band, Muse, which released a terrible album (so did Lostprophets who I still enjoyed back then).
Other big disappointments include Raconteurs, Gossip (one killer, lot of fillers) and Outkast.
But worst of all, it is the year French slam hit the radio, with the teenage-diary whining of Grand Corps Malade and the poorly delivered numb texts of Abd Al Malik. And well, the incredible lack of musicality of both.

Too bad nobody else voted for Clint Mansell's filmscore of The Fountain. In its whole the album can be a bit repetetive, but assorted individual tracks rank among the greatest soundtrack music of the last decade.
It's too late into the month to make any diffence now, but just for the sake of it I'm going to post Death Is The Road To Awe once more, if only for the accompanying visuals, which are a piece of art in their own right.

Another album which sadly didn't gain much attention is the collaboration between Ethiopean saxofonist Getatchew Mekuria and Dutch noiserockers The Ex (also close peers to Sonic Youth). A highly unusual combination in Worldmusic which doesn't work in all places, but when it does it really takes off.
