So many great songs I had to vote against!
STADIUM
Elvis Presley (Hound Dog): 4
The Beatles (I Want to Hold Your Hand): 0
"Hound Dog" is great by early Elvis standards, but I'd still rather not listen to it. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is what immediately comes to mind when I think of my disdain for The Beatles.
Jimi Hendrix (All Along the Watchtower): 8
The Rolling Stones (Jumpin’ Jack Flash): 6
I'll take Hendrix's guttural rock wailing over The Stones' greasy rock every time, although I do enjoy both on some level.
The Beach Boys (God Only Knows): 10
Bob Dylan (Subterranean Homesick Blues): 3
"God Only Knows" is the song that made me open to The Beach Boys - their surf stuff was generally stomach-turning for me. It's a sterling example of blissful melancholy, which is a potent combination. "Subterranean Homesick Blues" has an interesting video, but that's all I can say in its favor.
Prince (Little Red Corvette): 9
David Bowie (Changes): 8
Both of these songs are titans of their artists' early work, and I'd rather listen to several songs from both of their parent albums. Nonetheless, these are still wonderful, wonderful songs.
Bruce Springsteen (Thunder Road): 6
Led Zeppelin (Rock and Roll): 3
Bruce's bombastic anthem beats Led Zeppelin's LedZeppelinisms in a pretty meh matchup.
Radiohead (Paranoid Android): 6
The Who (Won’t Get Fooled Again): 2
I find it difficult to understand why these songs were chosen as peaks from their respective albums. "Paranoid Android" only earns a positive score for me due to the "Rain down from a great height" segment, while "Won't Get Fooled Again" is just as ham-fisted as the rest of Who's Next.
ARENA
The Velvet Underground (Sweet Jane): 6
Bob Marley (Get Up, Stand Up): 4
This is much closer than this matchup should be. "Sweet Jane" is probably my favorite on Loaded, but that's not saying much. Meanwhile, "Get Up, Stand Up" may very well be my favorite Bob Marley song.
Elvis Costello (Watching the Detectives): 6
Marvin Gaye (Sexual Healing): 3
I appreciate the tension in "Watching the Detectives", but the reggae beat drags it down a bit for me. "Sexual Healing" has always struck me as pretty gross.
The Smiths (How Soon Is Now?): 10
R.E.M. (It’s the End of the World As We Know It): 5
"How Soon Is Now?" was my first exposure to The Smiths, and I love it every bit as much as I did then. Meanwhile, the positive elements of "It's the End of the World As We Know It" are neutered by Stipe's obnoxious tone.
Nirvana (Heart-Shaped Box): 10
U2 (Pride (In the Name of Love)): 9
My favorite Nirvana song is thrillingly heavy, while "Pride (In the Name of Love)" is a great U2 track that is bettered on its own album by "Bad".
Stevie Wonder (Living for the City): 10
The Clash (Complete Control): 7
Stevie's funk fury would steamroll just about anything in its path. To its credit, "Complete Control" puts up a pretty good defense with its wildly run rebellion, but it nonetheless succumbs.
Neil Young (Hey, Hey, My My (Into the Black)): 5
Pink Floyd (Another Brick in the Wall, 2): 2
Neil Young is turning out to be a lot more interesting than I had initially thought, even if that voice of his will likely prevent me from ever really enjoying his stuff. "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" completely misses the mark for me.
CLUB
Talking Heads (Life During Wartime): 9
Johnny Cash (Folsom Prison Blues): 3
No surprises here. "Life During Wartime" has a wonderfully fat groove. I can see that "Folsom Prison Blues" is good, but I just don't care for it.
Aretha Franklin (Chain of Fools): 6
Beck (Where It’s At): 3
I'm beginning to reassess Aretha Franklin. I thought I didn't like her, but through various games like these I've given her songs three 6s and a 5, and that doesn't include "Think", which is my favorite. "Where It's At" was one of a few Beck songs that really turned me off of him during the 90s. "E-Pro" really intrigues me, though.
Creedence Clearwater Revival (Fortunate Son): 7
Van Morrison (Moondance): 7
A very close matchup of good tracks that aren't favorites. I was surprised by how much I liked "Moondance", but "Fortunate Son" burns a little more.
The Kinks (Waterloo Sunset): 9
The Byrds (Turn, Turn, Turn): 5
The Kinks have moved onto the shortlist of artists for me to explore, and with tracks as wistful as "Waterloo Sunset", it's not hard to see why. "Turn, Turn, Turn" is as meh as it is ubiquitous for me.
Public Enemy (Rebel Without a Pause): 7
James Brown (Get Up (I Feel Like Being) a Sex Machine): 7
Another very close matchup of good song that aren't favorites. Public Enemy just nabs it.
Michael Jackson (Beat It): 10
The Doors (The End): 9
"Beat It" is among my top 3 Michael Jackson songs. "The End" is among my top 10 Doors songs. Both are real favorites, and it's a shame they have to face each other here.

The Cure (Boys Don’t Cry): 9
Pixies (Gigantic): 3
I get what Pixies are going for with "Gigantic", but my ears haven't warmed to their particular brand of noise yet. "Boys Don't Cry", however, goes down like a charm every time.
Otis Redding (I’ve Been Loving You Too Long): 9
The White Stripes (Fell in Love With a Girl): 8
My favorite soul singer with one of his very best eke out a win over the most rip-roaringly fun song under 2 minutes that I can think of.
Lou Reed (Satellite of Love): 10
Tom Waits (Downtown Train): 9
Lou's eerie take on obsessive love is made the highlight of an amazing album with Bowie's masterfully soaring backing vocals. "Downtown Train" is amazing in its own right, and it would have beaten "Walk on the Wild Side" for me, but isn't in quite the same stratosphere as "Satellite of Love".
Kraftwerk (Das Model): 10
Roxy Music (More Than This): 9
The Man Machine saw Kraftwerk launch head-first into synth pop, and "The Model" is the best example of that, even if I prefer "Metropolis" and "Neon Lights". Still, "The Model" deserves its status as a trailblazer. "More Than This" leads the way for Roxy Music's sacred serenity of Avalon, and it assured that the band went out on a high.
Blur (For Tomorrow): 6
Joni Mitchell (Free Man in Paris): 5
These are decent enough, but hardly deserving of being the 2nd and 3rd most acclaimed songs by those artists, even with my very limited knowledge of their material.
Ramones (Sheena Is a Punk Rocker): 7
Sonic Youth (Death Valley ’69): 7
Both of these are quite good, and "Death Valley '69" is twisted and intriguing, but the fun economy of "Sheena" ekes out the win here.
No time left, so voting without listening (pass if not sure)
