Here are the matchups for the second week.

I'll probably start posting standings after Week 3.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

Uhh...The VU song should be "Herion" not "Herione".
Edit: And shouldn't Nirvana's song be "Smells Like Teen Spirit" if it's their top ranked song?

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

I was scratching my head a lot this week saying, "That's really this artist's second most acclaimed song?" Or in the case of Pink Floyd, "That's really their most acclaimed song?"

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

STADIUM DIVISION
The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations) vs. The Beatles (A Day in the Life)
I think both are wildly overrated, but I would tather hear "Good Vibrations".
Prince (When Doves Cry) vs. The Rolling Stones (Sympathy for the Devil)
Moonbeam brided me. Joking, of course. "When Doves Cry" is my favorite Prince song, as opposedto a decent Stones song.
Bruce Springsteen (Born to Run) vs. Bob Dylan (Tangled Up in Blue)
Great matchup. I've always considered the Dylan song one of his best. "Born to Run", not as much.
The Who (My Generation) vs. David Bowie (Space Oddity)
Bowie is great, but "My Generation" is in my top 20.
Elvis Presley (Heartbreak Hotel) vs. Led Zeppelin (Whole Lotta Love)
I take Zep of Elvis nine times out of 10.
Jimi Hendrix (Purple Haze) vs. Radiohead (Fake Plastic Trees)
I take Jimi over Radiohead 9 times out of 9.

ARENA DIVISION
The Smiths (This Charming Man) vs. The Velvet Underground (Heroin)
The VU doesn't stand a chance against a song in my top 15.
Nirvana (Heart-Shaped Box) vs. Marvin Gaye (What’s Going On)
As mentioned above, based on the system, shouldn't Nirvana's best song be going? (Smells like Teen Spirit)
Stevie Wonder (Superstition) vs. R.E.M. (Radio Free Europe)
This was tough. Both are among my favorites by the artist.
Pink Floyd (See Emily Play) vs. U2 (Sunday Bloody Sunday)
Pink Floyd's most acclaimed song? This is sad but true.
Bob Marley (No Woman No Cry) vs. The Clash ((What Man) In Hammersmith Palais)
Elvis Costello (Alison) vs. Neil Young (Rockin’ in the Free World)

CLUB DIVISION
Creedence Clearwater Revival (Proud Mary) vs. Talking Heads (Psycho Killer)
The Kinks (You Really Got Me) vs. Aretha Franklin (I Say a Little Prayer)
James Brown (Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag) vs. Van Morrison (Madame George)
Michael Jackson (Billie Jean) vs. The Byrds (Eight Miles High)
Close call.
Johnny Cash (I Walk the Line) vs. Public Enemy (Bring the Noise)
Beck (Loser) vs. The Doors (Riders on the Storm)

COFFEE SHOP DIVISION
Tom Waits (Innocent When You Dream) vs. Pixies (Debaser)
Kraftwerk (Autobahn) vs. Otis Redding (Try a Little Tenderness)
In general, Kraftwerk makes me want to pull my hair out, but "Autobahn" less so than others.
Joni Mitchell (Help Me) vs. Lou Reed (Perfect Day)
Ramones (Blitzkreig Bop) vs. Roxy Music (Love Is the Drug)
The Cure (Just Like Heaven) vs. Blur (Girls and Boys)
The White Stripes (Seven Nation Army) vs. Sonic Youth (Kool Thing)

CORRECTION

The Nirvana song is wrong (Thanks for catching it, Listguy). The matchup is:

Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit) vs. Marvin Gaye (What's Going On)

As a consequence, I'm changing my vote to Nirvana.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations)
The Rolling Stones (Sympathy for the Devil) Two of my top ten all time.

It make zero sense to me. See Emily Play doesn't make my top 20 Floyd songs. See Emily Play could just as easily have been a song in the Moody Blues catalog as far as I'm concerned.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

I'll vote where I can for now.

The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations): 6
The Beatles (A Day in the Life): 3

I'm not really big on either one, but at least "Good Vibrations" isn't actively annoying.

Prince (When Doves Cry): 10
The Rolling Stones (Sympathy for the Devil): 6

Duh!

Bruce Springsteen (Born to Run): 6
Bob Dylan (Tangled Up in Blue): 3

Funny that these songs would appear the same week they appear in the World Cup game.

David Bowie (Space Oddity): 10
The Who (My Generation): 1

As clear a case of good vs. evil as there is this week.

Jimi Hendrix (Purple Haze): 8
Radiohead (Fake Plastic Trees): 7

The gap isn't as close as the rating indicates, as it's more like 8.3 vs. 6.8, but still a good matchup.

The Velvet Underground (Heroin): 10
The Smiths (This Charming Man): 7

It's not often I'll choose a 60s song over an 80s song. "Heroin" is my favorite 60s song, and I like about 30 Smiths songs more than "This Charming Man".

Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit): 7
Marvin Gaye (What’s Going On): 6

Both have far better songs not only in their careers, but on their respective albums.

Stevie Wonder (Superstition): 10
R.E.M. (Radio Free Europe): 5

Easy choice, this.

Talking Heads (Psycho Killer): 7
Creedence Clearwater Revival (Proud Mary): 5

Again, both have songs I far prefer to these.

The Kinks (You Really Got Me): 9
Aretha Franklin (I Say a Little Prayer): 6

I like The Kinks a lot more than Aretha, and these are about as good as it gets from either.

Michael Jackson (Billie Jean): 10
The Byrds (Eight Miles High): 6

This is more typical of an 80s/60s clash for me.

The Doors (Riders on the Storm): 10
Beck (Loser): 1

I guess this one almost trumps the "Space Oddity"/"My Generation" blowout.

Kraftwerk (Autobahn): 7
Otis Redding (Try a Little Tenderness): 7

Close, close matchup. As with other matchups, they both have far more appealing songs to me.

Roxy Music (Love Is the Drug): 8
Ramones (Blitzkreig Bop): 8

Another tough matchup! I think I just prefer "Love Is the Drug".

The Cure (Just Like Heaven): 9
Blur (Girls and Boys): 7

These are both great radio staples.

Sonic Youth (Kool Thing): 9
The White Stripes (Seven Nation Army): 8

Great matchup of by far my favorite song by each artist.

There is something wrong with See Emily Play as Pink Floyd's best. What is up with this ranking compared to some of Floyd's later masterpieces?
It make zero sense to me. See Emily Play doesn't make my top 20 Floyd songs. See Emily Play could just as easily have been a song in the Moody Blues catalog as far as I'm concerned.

Critics tend to prefer the Syd Barrett-led Pink Floyd over its later prog/stadiumrock incarnation. In this case I'm on the critics' side.
Also, the music of post-Barrett Floyd works better as integral part of an album than as individual songs taken out of the context of the album. There is a reason for it that a band as big as Pink Floyd scored such few hits. I think Money only made the top 20 in the U.S. and of course Another Brick In The Wall was huge. But IMO neither of those two surpass Syd's finest three minutes, which is See Emily Play.

And the Moody Blues were much, much better writers of catchy popsongs than Pink Floyd.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

Beach Boys-Good Vibrations
Rolling Stones-Sympathy For The Devil
Bruce Springsteen-Born To Run

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

After each song a 5 star rating and in parenthesis, the all time rank for 5-star songs only

Week 2 (Song 1 vs. Song 2)
STADIUM DIVISION
The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations) 5 (226) - The Beatles (A Day in the Life) 4.25
I always found A Day In The life overrated, cause I think the two parts don't really fit together.

Prince (When Doves Cry) 5 (56) vs. The Rolling Stones (Sympathy for the Devil) 5 (59) very tight

Bruce Springsteen (Born to Run) 5 (10) vs. Bob Dylan (Tangled Up in Blue) 5 (172)
The Who (My Generation) 4.5 vs. David Bowie (Space Oddity) 5 (135)
Elvis Presley (Heartbreak Hotel) 5 (489) vs. Led Zeppelin (Whole Lotta Love) 4.25
Jimi Hendrix (Purple Haze) 4.75 vs. Radiohead (Fake Plastic Trees) 4

ARENA DIVISION
The Smiths (This Charming Man) 3.25 vs. The Velvet Underground (Heroin) 5 (523)
Nirvana (Smells like TS) 5 (75) vs. Marvin Gaye (What’s Going On) 5 (36)
Stevie Wonder (Superstition) 5 (12) vs. R.E.M. (Radio Free Europe) 3.75
Pink Floyd (See Emily Play) 4 vs. U2 (Sunday Bloody Sunday) 4.5
Bob Marley (No Woman No Cry) 5 (39) vs. The Clash ((White Man) In Hammersmith Palais) 4.5
Assuming it's the 1975 live version of NWNC

Elvis Costello (Alison) 3.75 vs. Neil Young (Rockin’ in the Free World) 5 (236)

CLUB DIVISION
Creedence Clearwater Revival (Proud Mary) 5 (539) vs. Talking Heads (Psycho Killer) 3.5
The Kinks (You Really Got Me) 5 (452) vs. Aretha Franklin (I Say a Little Prayer) 4.25
James Brown (Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag) 4.5 vs. Van Morrison (Madame George) 4.5 tie
Michael Jackson (Billie Jean) 5 (15) vs. The Byrds (Eight Miles High) 4.25
Johnny Cash (I Walk the Line) 4.5 vs. Public Enemy (Bring the Noise) 3.5
Beck (Loser) 4 vs. The Doors (Riders on the Storm) 4.5

COFFEE SHOP DIVISION
Tom Waits (Innocent When You Dream) 5 vs. Pixies (Debaser) 4
At least this wonderful song will get 2 points against a good song by a band which is not my cup of tea. Thanx to my man Greg !
Kraftwerk (Autobahn) 3.25 vs. Otis Redding (Try a Little Tenderness) 4
clash of styles... the Otis song is OK but not among my fave
Joni Mitchell (Help Me) 3.5 vs. Lou Reed (Perfect Day) 4.5
Ramones (Blitzkreig Bop) 4 vs. Roxy Music (Love Is the Drug) 4.25
The Cure (Just Like Heaven) 4.25 vs. Blur (Girls and Boys) 4.5

Thanks for the explanation.

I would have to guess that you also prefer See Emily Play to any of the following gems:

The Great Gig in the Sky
Us and Them
Speak to Me/Breathe
Time
Brain Damage
Eclipse
Another Brick in the Wall
Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Hey You
Comfortably Numb

On the other hand, I do prefer See Emily Play to Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.

I look for other artists than Pink Floyd to provide me with catchy pop songs, and prefer many of the Moody Blues songs to See Emily Play as well. Did you also like any of Barrett's solo efforts, e.g., Wined and Dined or Dominoes?

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

There should be at least 4 Floyd songs ranked above "See Emily Play":
-Wish You Were Here
-Money
-Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)
-Comfortably Numb

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

Well, See Emily Play surfacing as Pink Floyd's most acclaimed song is not so much a question of 'this song is better than the other' but has a lot to do with the notion that among critics Syd Barrett is considered cool, while Roger Waters is looked upon as an egocentric potentate who takes himself way too seriously.
As you may know, popculture is not only about music, it's also about image. And Roger Waters for one is an artist who doesn't generate much sympathy. Not by critics (who are responsible for the AM list) nor by his former bandmates.

And Syd's The Madcap Laughs rules of course.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

STADIUM DIVISION:
Good Vibrations -- 2 really good songs, hard to believe either are considered Greatest of All-Time!!!
When Doves Cry -- As much as I love Stones material from their golden era, Purple Rain is a major force, pulled out the vinyl just for this occasion...
Born To Run -- Tough, Tough choice. Born to Run is one spot higher on my top song list from '75...
Space Oddity --
Whole Lotta Love -- Over the past few years I have grown to slightly dislike Elvis, not sure why.
Fake Plastic Trees --

ARENA DIVISION:
This Charming Man -- Doesn't matter which song, I will ALWAYS take a Smiths track over a VU track!!!
Smells Like Teen Spirit -- Another agonizing decision...
Radio Free Europe -- Y'all killing me today, this is like choosing what supermodel do you want to date, or so I am told!!!
Sunday Bloody Sunday --
(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais --
Alison -- As noted by the past 3 votes, always partial to late '70's/early '80's...

CLUB DIVISION:
Psycho Killer --
You Really Got Me -- Crazy thing about having 2 similar games going on simultaneously, it feels like I just voted against this song... which I did...
PASS -- It is rare that I pass, but I do not care for either. It is too bad I could not make up for voting against "Into The Mystic" in that other game since it is really the only Van song I really like...
Eight Miles High -- Though I like the Husker Du cover better...
Bring The Noise -- Why couldn't one of these switch places w/JB-Van matchup...
Riders on the Storm -- Personally Beck has not aged well, I find myself skipping over his tracks on my iPod...

COFFEE SHOP:
Debaser -- Never liked anything from Tom Waits, I would probably vote for Gerardo or Right Said Fred or Nickelback, wait forget that Nickelback comment, too extreme. But this is Pixies, no brainer!!!
Try A Little Tenderness -- Otis my man. I just hope a Tom waits/Kraftwerk matchup does not come up, automatic pass!!!
Perfect Day -- Not a Joni Mitchell fan, not even a little bit...
Blitzkreig Bop -- Hey Ho...
Just Like Heaven -- Girls and Boys is such a great song, but Just Like Heaven is my personal choice for the perfectly crafted pop song. A personal top 5.
Seven Nation Army --

Re: CORRECTION

Rocky Raccoon
The Nirvana song is wrong (Thanks for catching it, Listguy). The matchup is:

Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit) vs. Marvin Gaye (What's Going On)

As a consequence, I'm changing my vote to Nirvana.

Just putting a reminder here.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

Stephan
Which version of Innocent When You Dream are we voting for by the way? Frank's Wild Years has two versions, 78 and Barroom.

Ask Henrik. Whichever one is on the AM list.

Any version. AM lists songs, not versions of songs.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 2

Finishing off the votes.

Elvis Presley (Heartbreak Hotel): 4
Led Zeppelin (Whole Lotta Love): 2

Weak matchup here. "Heartbreak Hotel" is trademark Elvis, and I don't care for trademark Elvis. "Whole Lotta Love" is typically ham-fisted fare from Led Zeppelin.

U2 (Sunday Bloody Sunday): 9
Pink Floyd (See Emily Play): 3

Easy matchup for me here. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" gets me going, while "See Emily Play" is mercifully short.

The Clash ((What Man) In Hammersmith Palais): 6
Bob Marley (No Woman No Cry): 0

I have an irrational hatred for "No Woman No Cry", and it is likely the reason for most of my antipathy for Bob Marley's music. Every Clash song would have won by default. It's interesting that "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais" is presented here, as I guess it was their first dabbling in reggae, which is probably why I rate it lower than I should.

Elvis Costello (Alison): 7
Neil Young (Rockin’ in the Free World): 6

A surprisingly high rating for Neil Young, as his voice drives me batty, but "Rockin'" legitimately rocks. Still, Costello's tender vocal curl earns a win.

James Brown (Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag): 7
Van Morrison (Madame George): 6

Another surprisingly high rating for an artist whose voice drives me batty, this time Van Morrison. The strings are lush and very pretty, and I surprisingly wasn't compelled to turn it off in spite of its length. Still, the subtly cool funk of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" secures the victory.

Public Enemy (Bring the Noise): 7
Johnny Cash (I Walk the Line): 2

A good PE track gets an easy win here. I know Johnny Cash is "good country", but that makes it no less painful for these ears.

Tom Waits (Innocent When You Dream): 6/7
Pixies (Debaser): 4

Which version of "Innocent When You Dream" goes here? I prefer the 78 version to the barroom version, but either one wins over the conundrum that is the Pixies track. "Debaser" has really good instrumentation, but Frank Black's vocal seizure ruins it for me.

Lou Reed (Perfect Day): 10
Joni Mitchell (Help Me): 7

"Perfect Day" is magic to my ears. "Help Me" starts off slow, but its intricate rhythms won me over in the end. Still, it is no match for Lou near his solo peak.
