2008 and 2009 Top Songs Lists and updated Top 3000 All Time Song List

I was unable to find a thread that updates progress on these lists, including when we expect them to be available.

As I recall, there were some folks who generously offered their help to get at least one of these done.

Please indicate which efforts are underway and when we expect the results to be published.

Many thanks.

I was wondering this as well.

Another month and still no word.

Reminds me of rather pedestrian Todd Rundgren song entitled "One More Day (No Word)."

Well, then, consider me the first lieutenant...

On second thought, I suppose that's a little harsh. I confess I was like you once; I fondly recall the early years of this site, when the updates would occasionally occur on a monthly rather than a yearly basis. It took me a while to learn to be patient. As the years go on and the potential database expands exponentially, the process of updating the site becomes more and more time-consuming, especially for someone with as many additional responsibilities as Henrik has accumulated.

Stefan's recent announcement that he was pulling the plug on Mega-Critic made me - and probably many others here as well - think about the fact that one day, perhaps inevitably, Henrik may also decide to discontinue updating the all-time lists. I have no doubt that we will see a fully updated songs list sometime this year as well as an albums list with all our 2010 favorites integrated; but I think it's an open question how many more we can expect to see after that. As I've said many times, the fact that Henrik does continue to do this year in and year out is remarkable.

Harold, if ever there was a "like" button on this board, I would click on it. Bravo for your post !

Well done. Excellent use of the Rundgren lyrics

I am not chomping at the bit, but merely wondering. I expect that I will wait at least three months before bringing this up again. Not exactly following orders, but for now I will "shut up and wait."

Re: 2008 and 2009 Top Songs Lists and updated Top 3000 All Time Song List

Sorry guys for not responding earlier. I didn't know whether to respond in this thread or in the "The list-making workshop : sharing our list-making methods" thread. I'll explain...

The answer is that I haven't worked on the site update for a long while. I usually work intensively and then take a break from the site updates. I can never stay away from music and statistics though, and during this break I got the idea to rank albums with the help of Spotify. Simply explained, I have created playlists for the albums' first songs, second songs, etc. and then added the song rankings into a spreadsheet to get a total score for each album. I got totally obsessed by adding more albums (currently 289) as well as improving the score formula (the current version of my spreadsheet is called album_rank59!). I know many of you have said that many albums are better than the sum of its songs, but for me this really works.

A month ago I got severe back problems and I stopped most of the computer activities (except writing in the forum!). Instead I have been watching movies when the children have gone to bed, and now I am obsessed with that!

I really need a kick in the butt to get to work on the site update again. I know I will pressure myself to get the site up before the next EOY wave, as long as my back is OK.

Henrik, my advice to you is to put your health in 1st place! Watching movies is more a hobby for winter time, the site update can wait, so why don't you first enjoy the summer (which are too short in Sweden anyway)?

The correct expression is actually "champing at the bit." Although I have no idea why.

Re: 2008 and 2009 Top Songs Lists and updated Top 3000 All Time Song List

Chill out, Henrik, and get better. This is your site and you can update it whenever the fuck you want.

Re: 2008 and 2009 Top Songs Lists and updated Top 3000 All Time Song List

Thanks guys!

Andre, I spend a lot of time outdoors with the kids during the days and enjoy the summer a lot. And I love to end the day with a movie, it's not too unhealthy I think.

That sounds a lot better!

Rather pedestrian! I love that song, one of the best on a great double album.

Re: 2008 and 2009 Top Songs Lists and updated Top 3000 All Time Song List

Henrik, hope your back pain is getting better. Of course I’m not an expert in that field but you surely should seek the advice of an specialist on orthopedics (but probably you already did). Maybe an ergonomic chair could be enough.
Or maybe is a question of too many hours in front of the computer, at work and also at home (but don’t show this to Malin).

Going to the subject of the thread, as I can see (and maybe I’m wrong), you’re getting tired of working on the site updates, it’s too time-consuming, too monotonous and not gratifying. What you really like is to begin new projects, new ways of measuring music and movies, new ways of fusing statistics and arts. Like this new project of ranking albums using Spotify playlists or your great formula that can predict which movie is more likely to fit with your tastes (I don’t know if you talked about that in the “Movies, politics, whatever...” section of AM Forum, if not you really should).

But it’s not only a problem of yours. The problem still not solved in the Internet is the money exchange. If every time that one of us spend some time in the Acclaimed Music web page (time that could perfectly be traced) our Internet connection payed some money to the webmaster, you could have some money income. With this money you could hire someone to do the monotonous part of the work and keep the site continously updated. But since this site (as almost every other personal sites) is a labour of love the situation won’t change in a near future.

Hope my words don’t bother or offend you in any way, Henrik. Your work on this site is simply amazing.
See you tomorrow in Paris!!

Re: 2008 and 2009 Top Songs Lists and updated Top 3000 All Time Song List

why do not we each do our part? if
Henrik organizes the work we could do together.

I intend to work us all the updates and be
a season without playing to polls and similar games

I'm very happy that you like the song. I enjoy it as well.

But, I can probably name 12 other songs on that great double album that I prefer without even referring to an album song list:

I Saw the Light
It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference
It Takes Two To Tango
Cold Morning Light
Breathless
Marlene
Saving Grace
Piss Aaron
Couldn't I Just Tell You
Black Maria
Some Folks Are Even Whiter than Me
You Left Me Sore (close call)
Slut
