Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Welcome to part 6 of the best albums and songs of the '00s poll. This month we will be focusing on the year 2005.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of July. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

Please have a look at the 2004 album and song lists before voting.
You can also vote for albums and songs outside the AM top 3000.
I would appreciate if you vote in form:
rank. artist name - albums/songs name. Thanks [/quote]

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Great year.

here is my album list in progress

Only 10 albums so far (stuff I've been listening to during the past 4 years)

Syd Matters is a decent French one-man indie-folk band who plays a mix of Nick Drake and Radiohead (without the genius of course)

Expect Bright Eyes to enter soon (probably at a very high rank), as well as the great and crazy Katerine and many others (R. Hawley, Sigur Ros...)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Just saw Amadou & Mariam's Dimanche A Bamako appearing on several lists. I know that on most sites it's listed as a 2005 release. However, it came out first in France on Because Records in 2004.
The same counts for the Konono No.1 album. First issued by the Belgian Crammed Discs company, also in 2004.

I think we can still treat them both as a 2005 albums although they may have released in 2004 (and Mindrocker even voted one song from Dimanche A Bamako).
What about MGMT? I'm not sure have Kids and Time to Pretend aged well at all but I think if we vote for them the right time is in this month and not in October or September. Although if the 2005 versions differ a lot from the Oracular Spectacular versions I may change my mind
. So what people think?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

When it comes to MGMT, I am going to be voting for them in the year Oracular Spectacular came out.

Same here. Time to Pretend (and probably Kids) will get my vote in the 2007 round. The 2005 versions are a bit crap in comparison.

You're absolutely right Mindrocker, but I think (If I get it well) that not to confuse things too much, we decided that the RYM date was the rule. That's why I didn't vote for those albums for 2004.
So I guess that you can include them in your 2005 lists as well. They'll have better chances (if any) to score well in the end.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

My 10th song entry (Pink Cigarette) is from 1999...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

I find Sleater-Kinney very irritating (at least the first song).
Someday you'll have to tell me why you like such a noisy agression. I just can't stand it. I know I sound like an old grandpa (and i don't give a damn) but seriously, I wonder why people like to be hurt by noise and screams. Do you want to be punished for your sins or what ?
That's my problem with punk/hardcore.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

By this year I was starting to find many pop singles heavily online.

The 2004/5 version of CSS's Let's Make and Listen to Death From Above... was this different than the later version?

That's my problem with punk/hardcore.
I like Sleater-Kinney a lot but I understand your feelings. It's weird for me to listen to The Woods because I used to play it in alphabetic order in my iPod and usually skipped the last songs. Now these last songs come first!?! Jumpers and Night Light are the clear standouts IMO.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

It's true that the more you listen to a good album, the better it gets. But it's hard for me going at SK a second time when at first I thought they wanted to harm my ears and brain
It's like kids : once you've put your fingers in the plug, you don't do it again
As I can't listen to every album, I usually listen to the first 2 tracks and 2 other tracks in the middle (as if there was an A and B side). Then if I like it I listen to the whole album.
Here I couldn't go past the 3rd track. So maybe I stumbled over the most aggressive tracks of "The Woods", or are there more melodic songs deprived of screams and harcore distortred guitars ?

2006 I guess?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Screaming and off-key guitar riffs, when executed right, can contain more emotional energy than more pop oriented melodies.

Also, I think when you're used to hearing the same chord progressions over and over, something totally out of left field is welcome to the ears.

Although that particular album took a little while to grow on me. Anyway, try Modern Girl, I think its track 5. It's more melodic.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

I guess I stumbled over the wrong (i.e. most abrasive) songs. "Jumper" isn't bad at all. And even the first track after a second listen, gets better. I might have over reacted too soon. I can hear the melody and feel the energy behind the noise now.
I'm a bit nervous these days : I have taken the decision to quit my job in August to go free lance. So now I'm in the office with not much motivation and a strange feeling of mixed relief and expectation for the future.
Just like a prisoner who knows that he'll be out in a few weeks.

I can change it to 2006, though I was well aware of the track in 2005 (it even made Pitchfork's Top songs of '05 list).

Probably best to simplify and call it '06 considering everyone else will be voting for it for that year I suppose.

I think the answer to the original question is that it's obviously not noise or screaming to the ears of those of us who like them.
I find Sleater-Kinney a very skilled band who writes intricate and complex songs. It's not always the most listener-friendly, and I understand how Corin Tucker's vocals can be grating to some (They were to me at first), but I find S-K exhilaratingly challenging.
The Woods is certainly their heaviest album, and you might like others more. Try starting out with the pop-oriented song "You're No Rock 'n' Roll Fun" and go from there.
The one thing the Woods is missing is the great vocal interplay between Tucker and Carrie Brownstein that was a big part of previous albums.

Good luck with going freelance, as someone who works in a business with a lot of freelancers, I know it can be a big but rewarding step to take. I'm thinking of starting my own business in a year or two, so I might be going down a similar road soon.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Yes, nicolas, good luck with the change in your career. I only know you through your posts on AM but something tells me you'll be absolutely fine.

As for Sleater-Kinney, the insightful comments by others following your initial post is making me listen to The Woods again. Because OMFG I couldn't make myself listen to a whole album of such horrible screeching noise on first attempt. But as always there are people on this forum with convincing opposing arguments, so I'm giving it another shot.

Of course, I was stupid

Thanks for the kind words ! I'll retry SK later .
And thanks to you Dan too ! (at least there's someone who thought like me after a first try at The Woods )

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

While we're talking about The Woods, I'll add that I was also unimpressed with this album on first listen until I got to "Jumpers." The run of songs from "Jumpers" on is excellent and has put this in top 5 of the year territory for me. I've also gone on an SK kick the last couple of days and bought the album One Beat, which I voted for back in 2002. This band is really good, and it's too bad they stopped while still in their prime.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

For me, The Woods was Sleater Kinney's worst album by a long shot, but the critics don't agree. If it wasn't for One Beat, I'd call SK overrated, but One Beat is so good, that it justifies their entire career for me.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

I liked One Beat immediately the first time I heard it, whereas it took me a little time to like The Woods. Those two are easily my favorite S-Ks.

I liked One Beat immediately the first time I heard it, whereas it took me a little time to like The Woods. Those two are easily my favorite S-Ks.

Try the song Modern Girl from the Woods. It's slow and twee even though it gets fuzzy at the end. You'd probably like Little Babies from Dig Me Out if you're into the Go-Gos. One Beat is their most new wave so you'd like that one too. SK are pretty tame by comparison to most punk and riot grrls especially Bratmobile, Bikini Kill and the 7 Year Bitch. Their vocals are more harmonized than any of the other riot grrls of the early 90s.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

I see a lot of votes for Robyn's Robyn album. I want to give it love, too, but I was hoping to include it for 2007, when it included the massive "With Every Heartbeat". What say you, Petri?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

About "John Wayne Gacy Jr" have you read this ?
Absolutely fascinating...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Yes, Nic, non-Americans like us knew very little about this serial killer before Sufjan's song.
By the way, nicolas, I wish you the best of luck with your new job.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Strange that Sufjan isn't mentioned in such a lengthy article.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

I've looked into this and the mention of the song has been removed on obscure grounds (see the discussion page in Wikipedia ). This is what I found : (sorry but for the caps, I copy pasted it)

(quote)
A recently added "In Music" section with info about the Sufjan Stevens song "John Wayne Gacy Jr" from the album Illinois has been removed. I see a comment at the top of the page reading:

DO NOT ADD "TRIVIA", "IN POPULAR CULTURE", OR "MEDIA" SECTIONS TO THIS ARTICLE. HE'S A CONVICTED KILLER, PEOPLE, NOT SOMETHING TO BE CELEBRATED WITH TRIVIALITIES. THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE ENTRIES WOULD BE NON-FICTION FILMS, BOOKS OR TELEVISION SPECIALS, OR SONGS THAT HE WROTE HIMSELF. REFERENCES IN A SONG BY BANDS OR SONGWRITERS, OTHERWISE UNRELATED TELEVISION SHOWS SUCH AS THE SIMPSONS WILL BE REMOVED WITHOUT FURTHER DISCUSSION (end of quote)

That is stupid I guess.

5. VITALIC - LA ROCK 1

This track was first issued on an EP which came out as early as 2001.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

So Mindrocker you didn't include Amadou and Mariam in your 2005 list as well ? it could have helped the album, although I doubt it will pass anyway.

At AM, all versions of "Robyn" are combined into one entry, at 2005, and if my word is worth anything, I think it should be the same here in this poll. I.e. vote for "Robyn" this month and vote for a later version if you want to.

NOT SOMETHING TO BE CELEBRATED WITH TRIVIALITIES

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Maybe they are afraid of the victims' families possible actions against them ??
But otherwise that is mere censorship.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

nicolas
So Mindrocker you didn't include Amadou and Mariam in your 2005 list as well ? it could have helped the album, although I doubt it will pass anyway.

Hi Nicolas, no, I'm sorry. I already included Amadou & Mariam in my 2004 songs list.

I thought I did my Wikipedia research on the songs on OK Cowboy and must have missed that.

Was La Rock 1 a different version back in 2001 or the exact same.

Was My Friend Dario a 2005 single?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Henrik
Moonbeam
I see a lot of votes for Robyn's Robyn album. I want to give it love, too, but I was hoping to include it for 2007, when it included the massive "With Every Heartbeat". What say you, Petri?
At AM, all versions of "Robyn" are combined into one entry, at 2005, and if my word is worth anything, I think it should be the same here in this poll. I.e. vote for "Robyn" this month and vote for a later version if you want to.

I agree with Henrik. The 2007 version is kind of special edition. So although the track listing is bit different (and because of With Every Heartbeat the 2007 version is better) I would say the album is from 2005.

Comments on some of my top 10 songs :

Banshee Beat / Purple Bottle : with Of Montreal's "The Past is a Grotesque Animal" those are my favorite cryptic lyrics of the 2000s. As strange as they are, I find them great and universal : Purple Bottle is, still in term of lyrics, one of my very favorite love songs, it is pure, simple and direct :
For instance :
"Make me sick, sick, sick to kiss you
And I think that I woud vomit
But I'll do that on Mondays, I don't have a work way"
I just find that wonderful...
Musically Banshee Beat is slightly better, despite the awesome drum work on Purple Bottle. Banshee Beat sounds like a pond making music, which is strange but great. And it's a great song about breaking-up and moving on.

I'll Believe in Anything :
I'm not a big fan of Wolf Parade, but this song is a wonder, it never is as it seems. Could sound depressing but ends uplifting, really dissonant but still beautiful, really a (slightly) hidden gem of the decade.

Farewell :
Is this a great opener or not : on the one hand it is by far for me the best song to open an album this year, but it does not reflect at all the music of its album. Anyway, it is one of the most haunting and heavy song of the decade, without any of the big riffs and drums of the rest of the album. Sort of Sigur Ros meets drone-metal, plain magic.

Insistor : In a list full of twisted or dark songs, this catchy sing-along retro song with a stomping beat and intense vocal performance is a breath of fresh air. After that the album came as a big letdown, but this remains as a glowing success.

Re: My favourite Spanish song of 2005: Refree's "La reina de les neus"

Making those yearly lists I realized that many of my choices were singer-songwriters, while previously I could have expected a lot of pop bands filling my lists. So it seems that I prefer "singer-songwriters" to "musicians", in fact all my favourite artists could fit in a broad concept of "singer-songwriter" that could include Prince, Kurt Cobain, Kanye West or David Bowie. After all they all "sing" the songs they "wrote". Moreover, and taking the argument to the limit, I don't really believe in rock bands. Most of them are a singer-songwriter backed by some friends (the best bands like the Beatles are lucky to have two singer-songwriters instead of one). Do you really think that the Stones would have been a significantly different band with, let's say, Chas Chandler instead Bill Wyman?
But this is another debate. We all know what we're talking about when we talk about "singers-songwriters". You know, confessional tone, spare backing and well-crafted lyrics in the best-case scenario. This style has shown its ability to evolve in time and adapt to the sensibilities of different generations. That's the case of Refree, the solo project of Raül Fernández. Raül began in the late 1990s playing in indie pop and post-rock bands singing in English like Corn Flakes, Romodance or Élena. Raül launched his solo project in 2002 with his album "Quitamiedos" ("Guardrails", 2002), mixing Spanish and English and introducing singer-songwriter moods without abandoning his post-rock style. His second album, "Nones" ("Odds", 2003) was his great leap forward, holding without complexes a more pure singer-songwriter style (with jazz, pop and post-rock influences), showing his sensitive side and introducing Catalonian (his native language) along with Spanish. His inventiveness as a musician also led him to work with many artists as collaborator, arranger or producer, including Josh Rouse, Fernando Alfaro, El Hijo, Aroah, Nacho Umbert, Roger Mas or Las Migas.
I've selected the song "La reina de les neus" ("The Snow Queen") from his third album, "La matrona" ("The Midwife", 2005), a quite enigmatic song with lyrics based in the fairy tale by Hans Chrstian Andersen. But Xavier Cervantes from Rockdelux dared to interprete the lyrics in the key of drug addiction: "Fairy tales are not what they seem. Not even the ones by Hans Christian Andersen, from whose melancholic Snow Queen Raül Fernández writes a song non rethoric about heroin. About a junkey artist that justifies his mistakes with song names?". This last question mark leaves the meaning open to interpretation, since I've (tried to) translate the lyrics now it's up to you. And what about the music? Well, just listen to the delicate music box that dominates the song, the horn and string quartet arrangements, the pa-pa-ra-ra backing vocals. Contemporary and classic sounds for the new singer-songwriters.

LA REINA DE LES NEUS
Composer: Raül Fernández
Performer: REFREE
First release: 2005 ("La matrona" album)
Length: 4'30"

Penso en veure'l despert,
sé que no és gran cosa,
potser si no mirem serà capaç de respirar
sota el gel.

Ja fa un temps que és menys gran
no sé si li van perdre

Pa pa ra ra ra ra ra raa
Pa pa ra ra ra ra ra raa

I busca pels racons
històries mortes dels herois
mentre jeu
amb la reina de les neus.

THE SNOW QUEEN

I think of seeing him awake,
I know it's not too much,
maybe if we don't look he would be able to breathe
under the ice.

For some time now he's younger,
I don't know if they lose one of his ages
in the middle of a day that it was not his,
maybe from a verse.

When I listen to him I don't mind
that he may be a little taller,
that he may have a glass half stuck in his retina
and that the hands he don't know what to do with
could justify the mistakes with the number of songs
found and lost.

It doesn't matter if later
the months with 'R' will come
and we will wait for the day to be a little longer,
maybe tomorrow.

When I listen to him I don't mind
that he may be a little taller,
that he may have a glass half stuck in his retina
and that the hands he don't know what to do with
don't know the streets and the shape of the money
found and lost.

Pa pa ra raa
Pa pa ra ra ra ra ra raa
Pa pa ra ra ra ra ra raa

And he seeks on the corners
dead stories from the heroes
while he lies
with the snow queen.

Great video too:

Great year.

That's interesting, I think 2005 is one of the weakest years of the decade (especially at the top: no `05 albums are in my top 150).

Hmmm... it's not quite my favourite album of 2005, but I'd be shocked and horrified if Illinois didn't make the top 150 of the imminent all-time albums poll.

Romain: une grande liste, comme toujours!... However, there is a mistake: I think "Push Barman to Open Old Wounds" is ineligible because it’s a compilation of EPs. Anyway, is Petri's decision if the album is eligible, of course.

Although the songs weren't released in any album before (even the 'The State I Am in' is a different version) I agree with Miguel. The songs were released 1997-2001 so we can't use The 3 EP's -card. So "Push Barman to Open Old Wounds" is ineligible. Nevertheless I strongly recommend to listen to album. It's the best B&S release of 00's.

I agree that the top isn't near the best ever (or even the best of decade) but albums somewhere between 35-40 are at least almost as good as albums inside the top 10 of 2003.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Surprised there is not more support for Gimme Fiction, my favorite of Spoon's ongoing sterling run of albums. And I encourage everyone to seek out the Spinto Band's super-fun album from this year.

15. The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
16. Gorillaz - Demon Days

I agree although 05 was not better than 03 entirely, as both years did have a really weak top 20 list. Sigur Ros, MIA and Sleater Kinney were good enough for me to perfer 05s top 20 more though.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

I am surprised (and a bit saddened) by the lack of support for Feels. MPP is probably overhyped here, but Feels seems terribly overlooked ! It's a wonderfully strange album about love with, I can admit, some "too strange" songs like Flesh Canoe, but lots of marvelous moments too.

Yeah! Our list needs more Animal Collective! Feels is a solid album but i've heard just three full albums from the year so I can't support it.

Thanks for these. I know it’s ridiculous (and slightly unfair) to point out specific album posts when appreciation of music is such a subjective thing and when everyone’s lists are absolutely noteworthy in their own way. But I listen to about 250 albums of each year over a period of 2-3 months ahead of these polls, so when I discover something new that I like I can’t help but get excited and I feel the need to let the person who listed the album know, even if the album is towards the bottom of my top 20 or even just outside it. I will probably do this every month, so please be patient with me.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Hi Petri,

Can I add Takk... by Sigur Ros as my #8 Album and move everything else down 1 spot? Thank you!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

I hope they let you because that is their true masterpiece. I'm suprised even () outranks it but I guess they're one of those bands whose acclaimed keeps decreasing with every album (since 98) no matter how good they truly are like their fellow country woman Bjork.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2005

Dan M, thank you for your comments and for picking these relatively unknown albums. Hayes Carll deserves a better acclaim IMO as an intelligent country-rock singer with very solid songs in the vein of Ryan Adams with a Texas singer/songwriter flavor.
Mathieu Boogaerts is a favorite of mine, i saw him in concert and it was great. I'm always a bit disappointed by his albums (not enough good songs ) , but on "Michel" songs like "Une bone nouvelle" or "C'est dommage are great highlights. I think I prefer the man to his albums.

And Romain at least there's somebody else who likes Katerine . This album is his most acclaimed (although I prefer the latest), with electro arrangements made with Gonzalez, reminding of Kraftwerk and LCD Soundsystem.. For a foreign listener it may sound strange because the lyrics are very important. Their irony and surrealistic humor, contrasting with the kitsch of the music, make Katerine a male equivalent of Brigitte Fontaine at least in my opinion. I'll post a song in te 00's recommandation thread.

Romain
I removed the Belle and Sebastian album (thanks Honorio)

Sorry Romain but the credit should go to Miguel. In Spain we usually use a Bible quote for these situations: “Give to Ceasar what belongs to Ceasar”

I'm posting earlier than usual this month because on next monday I'm meeting Honorio and Henrik who are coming to Paris for 1 week
BTW, Honorio, we have the same top 3 this year and 6 albums in common in our respective top 10s.

Yes, I’m really looking forward for the three-way meeting in Paris! We’re gonna have a good time for sure!!
And, yes, a lot of coincidences in our lists this month (and “Illinois” is Henrik's #1 too). I’m glad you like “Coles Corner” too, some months ago I saw Richard Hawley live and hos live set was really stylish, this guy's got class. But “Coles Corner” is maybe too classic for the forum, probably it won’t make the Top 100 despite 1 #1 (Greg’s) and 3 #3s (Fred’s, yours and mine).
