Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Schwah
Listyguy, this game has been great so far. Thanks so much for putting it together.
I hesitate to mess with something that is working so well, but I have a suggestion for weeks 5 and 6. Consider whether teams in the same group should all have their final match at in the same week. In the soccer World Cup, the final group games now kick off at the same time, so there is no repeat of the infamous West Germany-Austria (allegedly) pre-arranged result at Spain '82.
In this case, if a team knows they don't need to win in week 6 because of the results in Week 5, they can hold off on picking a stronger song until later in the tournament. That gives an unfair advantage to the teams competing in Week 6 from a group.
For example, if Vampire Weekend beats Eno this week, and Eno beats the Beasties in Week 5, then Kanye is guaranteed a spot in the second round, and his manager can throw out any song in Week 6 and save his better songs for later. But if Kanye has to kickoff at the same time as Eno-Beasties, he is still not guaranteed a place in the knockout round, and will have to go for the win.
Obviously, you could say the same for Stevie Wonder. But he clinched by Round 2, and not because he was able to wait for his opponents Round 3 results.
I agree with this completely. I don't think it would be too hard to arrange either. Have the "A" group (artists 1-32) matches in Week 5 and the "B" group (the less acclaimed artists) kick off Week 6 or vice versa.

Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Andre
You chose to mix the top 32 and oustide top 32 brackets and the last matches in the group phase are not simultaneously (either week 5 or week 6).
Hopefully, we don't get a similar situation like e.g. at the world cup in 1982, where West Germany and Austria played an awful 1-0 match. Both teams were through to the next round and Algeria, who had played their last match a day earlier, were out...
Schwah, I mentioned the Germany-Austria case as well about a month ago, with the same concern as you have.
In the meantime, however, I don't really expect this to happen in our world cup: Each of us just vote and there is no tactics going on during the matchups ... unlike with soccer where coach and players can change the tactics during the match and in worst case, both teams can decide not to "play" further (like in the Germany-Austria case). So, I'm not so worried anymore ...
EDIT: Schwah, I only saw your post at the end of page 1. Now I'm reading all the other posts afterwards Ah well, for safety reasons it's good to have changed the schedule
1- Another One Bites the Dust
2- Keep Yourself Alive

6- Under Pressure
7- You're My Best Friend

5. I Can't Turn You Loose (Live at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go)
6. These Arms of Mine
7. I've Been Loving You Too Long
8. (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Can I make a conditional pick?
I'll make "Take Me to Your Heart" my Eurythmics pick. It probably will still lose to Arcade Fire, but it seemed to get a good response when I posted this thread. If you'll allow it, Listyguy, I'll put in "Step on the Beast" as the choice if Eurythmics win this week as I believe that means they would be assured a place in the next round, and I'd like to share a demented slice of Eurythmics mania.
For Siouxsie, I'll go with "Night Shift" as the default pick. If Siouxsie loses, though, I'll go with "Melt!" "99 Problems" is a forum favorite, so it will be tough to beat. But for all of the hardness that it brings, I think "Night Shift" shows that The Banshees are capable of absolute carnage. I like "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." as much as the next guy, but "Night Shift" is the pre-eminent serial killer song. "Melt!", meanwhile, is just devastatingly gorgeous while also sinister.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Noticing a lot of teams bringing in their ace (wait, that's Baseball) to try and push their way into the next round (Sly included).
Here's the list of songs set to kick off (wait, that's American Football) tomorrow:
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Biladama's updated Dylan list:

7. Like A Rolling Stone
8. All Along The Watchtower
[Hors Sujet
Sorry Moonbeam, can I ask you what are your twelve favorite songs by Prince in the 90's and the 00's. I make a list of best songs by decade and I found very difficult to choose for Prince. Thanks you.

Also, at the end of the tournament, I will let everybody vote on what they though the “Best Game” of the tournament was. I have come up with two candidates from the pool round (feel free to suggest another):
-Bruce Springsteen’s 23-0 shutout of the Talking Heads.
-The Wilco-Fela Kuti winner-take-all match, which Wilco ended up winning 10-8.
Also of note: The Marvin Gaye vs. Stevie Wonder match will be the first time in the tournament that two teams with the same manager (Nicolas) are squaring off.
When is the deadline for bringing in next weeks' songs. At midnight, from Friday to Saturday?
Can I place a request? In the group phase, you let some late song changes slip through, but could you be more strict with the deadline from now on? Thanks in advance!

Congratulations, nicolas, for reaching the quarter finals!
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Switch Alison with whatever's currently in Costello's 4th slot. Smiths are a forum favorite with too many aces. I at least want to force them to play an ace to beat me.
Stick with Ol' 55 for Waits for now. Ballads seem to get the most traction with him.

Will need to reshuffle THE SMITHS for the rest of the tourney:
4. This Charming Man
5. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
6. Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
7. Panic
8. Hand In Glove

The deadline you posted is correct. And I will be tightening up my grip on the deadline, especially since managers had a full week (two for b pools) to post their lists. There aren't any excuses at this point.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
A notice to team coldplay: You currently do not have a song slated for this week. If you do not post an update to your list beofre the deadline in two days, your song will default to "Trouble".
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
... and the new Otis Redding list:
1. Pain in My Heart 2. Hard to Handle 3. Mr. Pitiful
4. I Can't Turn You Loose (Live at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go)
5. These Arms of Mine
6. Try a Little Tenderness
7. I've Been Loving You Too Long
8. (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Listyguy, the YouTube video for Beautiful Day doesn't work (it might just be unavailable here in the UK, I don't know). This one works, if you are happy to use it.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Notice:
Teams Marvin Gaye, Prince and New Order currently do not have a song listed for next week, and will be defaulted to Mercy Mercy Me, Purple Rain and Age of Consent, respectively, if their lists are not edited by the team's managers.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Here are songs set to go next week. If I lose power before I can close voting (b/c of Hurricne Irene) I will keep voting for this week open until I regain power and will postpone next week's start until next Saturday (7 eastern, mdinight forum time). I also did not include teams that are getting destroyed this week.

Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Next time we do this game we should have blind picks. You should have to pick your song without knowing your opponent's song.
The manager of The Smiths, for instance, shouldn't have known whether or not I was going to play one of my aces, and should have had to decide whether or not to take the risk.
Now I'm stuck with a great, but very obscure Dylan pick against a popular classic.

The problem with that is I would know the songs and no one else would, giving me an unfair advantage.

Team Coldplay currently has no song listed for next week. Please update your list.
In the event that you do not update your list, your song will be defaulted to "Trouble".
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
1. Sympathy For The Devil
2. Jumpin' Jack Flash
3. Tumbling Dice
4. Gimme Shelter
5. You Can't Always Get What You Want
6. Paint It, Black
7. Brown Sugar
8. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Stephan
8. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
If both Redding and the Stones make it to the final (this is not assured by any means, particulalry with Moonbeam's New Order vote still to come), I am somwhat tempted to change my song and make it an all "Satisfaction" final. I might be the only person to vote for Redding's cover, but it would be epic.
That said... I'm going to stick with "Dock of the Bay"

That'd be an unexpected final. I must say that if Otis and the Stones make it to the final, two of my top 10 songs would be facing off.
