Welcome to the AMF World Cup Drafting Thread.
Here, post the artist from the top 32 you would like to “own” and the select an artist from outside the top 32 you would like to “own”. Please note that you must submit a list of eight songs that you would like to use for the artist’s matchups. Make sure they are listed in order (i.e. song 1 will be used for the artist’s first match up). You are allowed to change the list up to 1 day before each match up starts. If you fail to submit a list within a week, the artist will be available to the public again.
Here are the top 32 artists:
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, The Who, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground, Marvin Gaye, R.E.M., U2, The Clash, Neil Young, Nirvana, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, The Byrds, Public Enemy, The Doors, The Kinks, James Brown
Feel free to ask me any questions you have.
I will do the honors of drafting Jimi Hendrix.
I will chose my non-32 artist at a later time.
Here's my list for Jimi:
1- Fire
2- Crosstown Traffice
3- Foxy Lady
4- Little Wing
5- Hey Joe
6- Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
7- Purple Haze
8- All Along the Watchtower
Do we have to make the 8 songs we choose for an arist public? Can't we email the list to you instead? Just asking because I think part of the fun would be if the songs are actually a surprise.

The reason I'm making them public would be for strategy. If some emailed me while others posted them, those who emailed them would have an advantage.

Fair enough. I guess strategy makes things more interesting. Do I get to go straight through to the next round because I'm managing Kanye West and Bono (come on, it can't get more difficult than that). Just kidding, obviously. I will post my 8 songs for both shortly.
Must all the songs be from the same album or not? Cause I remember it began as an albums game and it would be interesting to choose which 8 songs from your album would you pick, and in which order.
Besides, I also agree that it would be better if we send the songs in secrecy, even because the other way the first ones to send the songs will be in disadvantage.
Edit: Saw your responses, and, yes, I agree that with strategy things become interesting.

Waits songs later.
How long do I have to post songs? Dylan is easy enough but I don't know all the song names of my favorite Waits songs.
Can you tell us a little more about the structure of the game? Are 1-3 for the group phase, then 4-8 for the rounds of 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 respective?

You have a week to post the list. You may also change it up until one day before the match up is set to start. You may also change it from week to week.
After the "pool round", it goes 32-16-8-4-2.
Also, a question for the masses: should I make the pool round 3 weeks (with 32 matches each week) or 6 weeks (with 16 matches each week?)
I probably like Dave Matthews more than AF, but I feel that would be like picking a 16-seed in an NCAA Tournament pool. The Beatles carry too much pressure, and I'm convinced they will be defeated no matter once. The only other Top 32 I like more than Bruce is Radiohead, and I shouldn't be their manager - three of my four favorites are Planet Telex, Airbag, and There There and surely there's a better fit for them out there. Plus Bruce is hot on this board right now after finishing second in Survivor.
P.S. The competitiveness that this adds to the game is fantastic. I did a little brainstorming about how to fit ownership into the divisions game, but I'm struggling. I do know that it would be great, though, if someone figured out how.

1. How Soon Is Now
2. William, It Was Really Nothing
3. Bigmouth Strikes Again
4. Girlfriend In A Coma
5. Hand In Glove
6. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
7. What Difference Does It Make

AS for the non-32, someone put dibs on The Cure. The forum seems to be lacking in one of my top-5, NINE INCH NAILS...
1. Head Like A Hole

I would like to make teams for the Beach Boys and Wilco. The latter band is not really well known for their songs, so this calls for strategy.
Team Beach Boys
1. I Get Around
2. Heroes And Villains
3. Tears In The Morning
4. Don't Worry Baby
5. Wouldn't It Be Nice
6. Sloop John B.

3. Tumbling Dice
4. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
5. Let It Loose
6. Paint It, Black
7. You Can't Always Get What You Want
8. Gimme Shelter
Listyguy, thanks for the pool setup and overview so far!
Just out of curiosity this process question:
What schedule are you gonna use for the finals? Is that the same or similar schedule as used in the last soccer world cups? The nice thing about using that schedule is, that artists qualifying from the same pool can meet each other again, but not earlier than the bracket final.
4. Trans-Europa Express (the whole thing as one, if possible)
Do you mean including "Metal on Metal" and "Abzug"? IMO, that's the weakest moment on any Kraftwerk album between '75 and '86.
Other than that, that team is a winner!
Of course! I think the three parts are meant to be listened to together. I think it's a fine centrepiece to a wonderful album. I thought the only reason they split the song up was because of time limits to a side of an LP.

Yes. How it owuld go is:
1st place in A.1 vs. 2nd place in A.2
1st place in A.8 vs. 2nd place in A.7
1st place in A.5 vs. 2nd place in A.6
1st plave in A.4 vs. 2nd place in A.3

Now that we know the groups the question is: which is the famed Group of Death?
The Bowie, VU, Wonder, PE group feels like (with all due respect to Chuck D) the Brazil, Portugal, Cote d'Ivoire, North Korea group. Could Flava Flav give the Thin White Duke a scare, like the North Koreans did to Brazil last year?
But I think my Kinks are in the strongest overall group, with the Stones, R.E.M., and Neil Young. Make it in 2d place out of that group, and then you've got to play Spain... I mean the Beatles. Hence my (to mix sports metaphors horribly) very strong clean-up hitter.
My Kinks lineup:
1. You Really Got Me
2. Shangri-La
3. Sunny Afternoon
4. Waterloo Sunset
5. Days
6. Celluloid Heroes
7. David Watts
8. Lola
I'll take The Beatles and my under 32 selection is Chuck Berry.
Here are the songs.
The Beatles:
1. For No One
2. A Hard Day's Night
3. The Golden Slumbers Medley
4. Eleanor Rigby
5. In My Life
6. Tomorrow Never Knows
7. Strawberry Fields Forever
8. A Day In The Life
Chuck Berry:
1. Back In The U.S.A.
2. Memphis, Tennessee
3. Sweet Little Sixteen
4. School Days
5. Rock And Roll Music
6. Roll Over Beethoven
7. Maybellene
8. Johnny B. Goode
Great pick with For No One, one of Mccartney's few slow dirgy songs that work in my opinion. People talk about Hey Jude and Let It Be, two songs I downright dislike, and then people ignore real songs like this.
When it comes to The Beatles I am about 60/40 on songs I love/Hate. I am glad to see that the 8 songs for Team Beatles are songs I really like. Though songs like Hey Jude, Yesterday, Yellow Submarine, Let It Be would have made it easier to vote aginst them!!!
Nassim, do you mind if I continue picking a non-32 artist? I like the idea of managing a highly acclaimed artist and also other not so "great". So everyone is still free to choose Costello (as long as he puts My Red Shoes in his list... , just kidding of course!).
Yes, it would be necessary a very accurate Beatles selection, cause, besides the anti-Beatles feeling that will surely appear, U2 has come with one of the best teams of the cup so far!
At least for me it makes no difference about who of them will win, since both are among my faves.
Edit: thinking better, it makes ALL the diference... R.E.M is in the same case that Schwah mentioned for the Kinks...

5.Changes
6.Ziggy Stardust
7.Life On Mars?
8."Heroes"
New Order
1.Regret
2.True Faith
3.Crystal
4.Age Of Consent
5.Ceremony
6.Temptation
7.Bizarre Love Triangle
8.Blue Monday
Wow! I considered both of these artists and I would have had 15 out of 16 songs. (probably would have pulled a deep track off Tecnique instead of Temptation). Nice work, I am excited about this game.
Ok, I need to redo my teams so that they're in a good order (I just realised this now)
Team Heads
1. The Big Country
2. Burning Down The House
3. The Great Curve
4. Don't Worry About The Government
5. Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)
6. The Book I Read
7. Psycho Killer

Anyone else interested in picking 2 top 32 artists so I can pick LCD and Elliott Smith ?
The odds are there will not be 32 "Managers" available. So, you will most likely get to pick a third artist later on. So, for now, you could take one in the top 32 and one outside it, and then when I allow users to "draft" a third artist, you could take the other.
Listyguy, you might already have explained some of this, but I have a couple more questions:
1) Until when can we still change our current lists before the world cup starts?
2) Can the list of 8 songs still be changed during the cup by exchanging a song with another one outside the list? My guess would be "no", but just checking.
3) You write that during the cup you can still change your team up to one day before the match. How does that exactly work? Let's say two matches have been played, does it mean that the list with songs 3 to 8 can still be mixed up completely? My guess here would be "yes", but I am anxiously awaiting your answer.

You will be allowed to change it up until a day before the matchup starts
Andre
2) Can the list of 8 songs still be changed during the cup by exchanging a song with another one outside the list? My guess would be "no", but just checking.
Yes, it can. The new list just can't include a song that's already competed.
Andre

Thanks for your quick answer to my questions. So it really will become a strategy game!
Listyguy
Also, a question for the masses: should I make the pool round 3 weeks (with 32 matches each week) or 6 weeks (with 16 matches each week?)
And to answer one of your questions in return: My first preference was to make the pool round 3 weeks instead of 6, so that every artist gets to play each week. But that would mean everybody needs to listen to 64 songs and vote 32 times each week ... so now at second thought ... maybe 16 matches each week will be enough. I would like simultaneous pool matches, so over the 6 weeks it would best to alternate the 2 brackets.
I'll go ahead an draft the home teams: Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Songs to come later.
It might be a good idea to update who's been taken once in a while.
Nirvana songs
1. Serve the Servants
2. About a Girl
3. The Man Who Sold the World
4. Heart-Shaped Box
5. On a Plain
6. Smells Like Teen Spirit
7. Come As You Are
8. All Apologies
Pearl Jam songs
1. Last Kiss
2. Corduroy
3. Black
4. Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
5. Nothing Man
6. Alive
7. Wishlist
8. Better Man
If we can still change our songs up to the date of the actual match, I'll just throw out some Tom Waits song names so I don't lose the reservation.
1. Walking Spanish (This is my actual first match pick)
2. Singapore (The rest are placeholders until I have a chance to re-listen to my favorite Waits albums)
3. Clap Hands
4. Cemetary Polka
5. Jockey Full Of Bourbon
6. Tango Till They're Sore
7. Big Black Mariah
8. Diamonds & Gold
My non-top 32 pick is none other than my favorite artist of all time, Queen.
Here's my list:
1- Another One Bites the Dust
2- Keep Yourself Alive
3- We Will Rock You
4- We Are the Champions
5- Killer Queen
6- Under Pressure
7- You're My Best Friend
8- Bohemian Rhapsody
This will change for sure once I know who they will be facing in the pool round.
1. You Really Got Me
2. Shangri-La
3. Sunny Afternoon
4. Waterloo Sunset
5. Days
6. Celluloid Heroes
7. David Watts
8. Lola
Good choices, mine would have been as such (obviously the Kinks would have been my selection had you not picked them):
You Really Got Me
Sunny Afternoon
Days
Waterloo Sunset
The Village Green Preservation Society
Shangri-La
This Time Tomorrow
20th Century Man
That gives you one track each from their classic run of albums, plus two strong singles.
Sorry to grab it before you, Jackson. I got excited about trying to manage a "#4 seed" and the Kinks seemed like the most fun.
I'm sure everybody who has picked their lineup has got a "second team" of fave tracks that they think are just as strong. Gotta play to the crowd though, and not just go with personal favorites. I now realize I didn't include anything from the Kinks' most acclaimed album, though, so I'm glad that we can make some changes.
Struggling with my Redding line-up, but I'll get a placeholder in right now:
1. I've Been Loving You Too Long
2. These Arms of Mine
3. Hard to Handle
4. Try a Little Tenderness
5. Satisfaction
6. Mr. Pitiful
7. Pain in My Heart
8. (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay
How is it that we should pick 8 songs if we're using the same format as the World Cup, where the max is 7 matches for one team?
That's because we have two tournaments running in parallel (1 bracket for top 32 AM and 1 bracket for non-top 32 AM). The winners of the 2 brackets will meet in the big final and that's the additional 8th match.
Wouldn't the result of that final be a bit...inevitable? It would be like the Uefa Super Cup (where you can have matches like Shaktar Donetsk vs Barcelona) except worse.
And also, Dan M's Kanye West team looks magnificent.
You never know, it all depends on song choice.
Speaking of song choice, i have here a list of lists I haven't recieved yet:
-Greg (I need 2)
-Moonbeam (I need 2)
-Toni (I need 1 and a non-top 32 choice)
-Jackson (I need 2)
-Alex D (I need 2)
1 - Drive
2 - Stand
3 - Orange Crush
4 - Man On the Moon
5 - Nightswimming
6 - It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)
7 - Radio Free Europe
8 - Losing My Religion
My non-32 is coming soon. I'm in doubt among 4-5 artists...
1. "Ben"
2. "Greatest Show on Earth"
3. "People Make the World Go 'Round"
4. "We've Got a Good Thing Going"
5. "Everybody's Somebody's Fool"
6. "My Girl"
7. "What Goes Around Comes Around"
8. "In Our Small Way"
Aretha Franklin:
1. "Won't Be Long"
2. "Over The Rainbow"
3. "Love Is The Only Thing"
4. "Sweet Lover"
5. "All Night Long"
6. "Who Needs You?"
7. "Right Now"
8. "Are You Sure"
The Who, Elvis Presley, The Velvet Underground, Marvin Gaye, The Clash, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, The Doors, James Brown
Thanks, Nick, for picking Blur!
After having discarded many artists, they were the only one I didn't have courage of not picking, due to the risk of nobody else chosing them, while on the other hand there were about 25 songs of theirs that I'd like to put in the lineup, being many of them not much acclaimed tracks...
And great team this one you scaled, although I still think my fave, Parklife, could play a good role in the game, heheh.
I wouldn't have helped myself not chosing Jubilee, Country House, Stereotypes, and would be painful to retire Star Shaped, Death of a Party, and so many others...

Thanks! I'm glad that you like the team I've picked! There were a lot of songs that I really wish that I could have put in, such as "Parklife", "Country House", "Chemical World", "Beetlebum", and about a dozen others.
The Who
1 - Behind Blue Eyes
2 - We Won't Get Fooled Again
3 - Pinball Wizard
4 - Love, Reign O'er Me
5 - I Can See For Miles
6 - We're Not Gonna Take It
7 - The Real Me
8 - Baba O'Riley
Steely Dan
1 - Don't Take Me Alive
2 - Doctor Wu
3 - My Old School
4 - Kid Charlemagne
5 - Aja
6 - Rikki Don't Lose That Number
7 - Parker's Band
8 - Reelin' In the Years
Is anyone else planning to join? If Nassim decides to take part, we will have 24 managers. We would need 8 more. If we do not get these managers by the middle of next week, I will allow for managers to take on a third team.
The Velvet Underground:
1. Rock and Roll
2. All Tomorrow's Parties
3. Sweet Jane
4. I'm Waiting For The Man
5. Sunday Morning
6. Heroin
7. Pale Blue Eyes
8. Sister Ray
The Replacements:
1. Bastards Of Young
2. Color Me Impressed
3. Alex Chilton
4. Unsatisfied
5. I Will Dare
6. I'll Be You
7. Left Of The Dial
8. Skyway
Well, on the top 32 I could have managed Radiohead and the Beatles, maybe Nirvana, but I don't see any other artist I enjoy and/or know enough to make a selection.
So here is my first non top 32 selection, hoping to be allowed to make another one :
LCD Soundsystem :
1. Big Ideas
2. Get innocuous
3. All I Want
4. Someone great
5. All my friends
6. You Wanted a Hit
7. North american scum
8. Losing my edge
I see that some of you have put the most beloved songs on the first round to be sure to reach the following rounds, other have kept the songs most likely to get a lot of votes for later rounds, so it's hard to pick the right order to face you, especially not knowing with bands LCD will face.
I also see that some have picked songs most likely to win while other have picked their personal favorites, I have tried a mix of both, leaving only one of my top 5 out (Great Release)and including "All I Want" which I don't like that much.
Making the choice of which song I would keep between North American Scum, Movement and Tribulations has not been easy either.
Well, on the top 32 I could have managed Radiohead and the Beatles, maybe Nirvana, but I don't see any other artist I enjoy and/or know enough to make a selection.
You don't like The Clash, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, The Doors, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Van Morrison, Elvis Presley, or Elvis Costello?
