I think it would be cool if the divisions were broken up by genre. Obviously, nobody would agree about the breakdowns, but the breakdowns would be close enough that it would add something.
Using just these:
Soul Division: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Prince
Classic Rock Division: Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd
Folk Division: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Radiohead
Punk Division: The Velvet Underground, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Nirvana
New Wave Division: The Smiths, Talking Heads, U2, David Bowie
Roots Rock Division: The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen
Beach Music Division: The Beach Boys, Bob Marley, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix
Marley and Radiohead are too different from the rest ("Beach Music"? Really?) for the genres to really click, but if the number were expanded (or even set in order to make the divisions make sense), I think the typical votes would be more interesting. It's always more fun to compare Aretha to Gaye than Aretha to the Flaming Lips.

Except that the point of this game is relegation and promotion. We need a top division and lower divisions, and which genre gets to be the "premier league"? And once the first round was done, all the genres would get jumbled anyway.

Oddly, I've been playing with something similar for a project I have in mind. Strict genre division is quite a bear, and I doubt we could ever come up with divisions that everyone is happy with. But I think I may have come up with a workable solution.
(Yes, the mad scientist bug may have bitten me again...I have a lot of wrinkles to iron out, but I may have come up with an album "tournament." Stay tuned. Heh heh...)
1. Make divisions a bit bigger, like e.g. 8 artists? 2 artists would go up, 4 would go down. Points can be as is, so from 4 down to 1, 4 artists don't get points.
2. To replace the 8 (or 16 for bigger divisions) artists that will leave Division 3, nominate 8 (or 16) artists from a pool of 32 (or 64)?
Division 1
4p The Beatles
3p Bob Dylan
2p The Rolling Stones
1p David Bowie
Division 2:1
4p The Beach Boys
3p Bruce Springsteen
2p The Who
1p Led Zeppelin
Division 2:2
4p Radiohead
3p Jimi Hendrix
2p Prince
1p Elvis Presley
Division 3:1
4p The Byrds
3p The Velvet Underground
2p Stevie Wonder
1p Pink Floyd
Division 3:2
4p Van Morrison
3p Bob Marley
2p Nirvana
1p Marvin Gaye
Division 3:3
4p R.E.M.
3p Neil Young
2p Elvis Costello
1p Aretha Franklin
Division 3:4
4p Talking Heads
3p U2
2p The Smiths
1p The Clash
Division 1
1. The Beatles, 68 points, next season would have been D1
2. Bob Dylan, 63 points, D1
3. The Rolling Stones, 56 points, D2:1
4. David Bowie, 43 points, D2:2
Division 2:1
1. Bruce Springsteen, 71 points, D1
2. Led Zeppelin, 58 points, D2:1
3. The Who, 52 points, D3:1
4. The Beach Boys, 51 points, D3:2
This game ends here, but hopefully Rocky Raccoon got a few good recommendations from this to his real division game. Thanks everyone for participating!
