Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

LED ZEPPELIN - The Beatles are returning champion, the favorites to win again and it is no secret that I would prefer they did not win again thus I have voted against them since Seger. But honestly I have both artists catalogues and if given the choice of listening to every song a-z, I would prefer a day of Zeppelin over a day of The Fab 4...
STONES - How does one make a wrong pick here, gotta go with my heart...
RADIOHEAD - Jack and Meg have made it as far as they can possibly go...
OUTKAST - Another difficult choice...
PRINCE - Finally an easy one, I will take any Prince song over any MJ song any day of the week...
THE CLASH - Wow, if you take my top 10's from both these artists it is virtually deadlocked, going with my heart on this one too...
R.E.M. - Back in 1983, how many people predicted these two would be considered legends...
THE BEASTIE BOYS - How come these 3 never toured together...

Only one difficult choice this day. Radiohead between The White Stripes but more the time pass more I found the Stripes incredibles and the band grow on me.

The Beatles
Bob Dylan - Dylan's deep cuts are better than the Stones. That was the difference in this tough matchup.

Prince - Blow out of the day.
Bruce Springsteen

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

THE BEATLES. Not a lot need be said here.

BOB DYLAN. Bob had a world-beating streak of albums in 1965-66; the Stones’ streak from 1968-72 is very comparable. I absolutely do not understand the opinion that the Stones should be penalized for having “done nothing” worthwhile over the last 30 years – their work down to Some Girls speaks for itself. BUT…the fact is that they haven’t done much of note since 1978. Bob Dylan has.

RADIOHEAD. I like Jack White, but he’s in way over his head in this company.

OUTKAST. Surprise! I think Blur is one of the greatest bands of all time, and I think they get too much grief from indie rock types for: a) being too poppy, and b) not being Radiohead. However, after a lot of reflection, I just can’t argue that they’ve moved the chains as much as OutKast has. I think the two acts are about equal on albums, but Blur doesn’t have a song to their name as vital as “B.O.B.,” “Ms. Jackson,” and “Hey Ya!” (Hell, not many do.)

PRINCE. Very interesting matchup, but the choice is clear. Am I right in remembering that they didn’t like each other very much?

THE CLASH. Joe Strummer, believe it or don’t, had great respect for Springsteen (and vice versa), and I think it’s clear that the Clash based some of their ferocious dedication and loyalty to their fans on the Boss. They just had much better music to back that up.

R.E.M. Another pair of contemporary bands with genuine fondness and respect for each other. I’ll never forget Stipe, Mills, Clayton and Mullen performing “One” at the first Clinton inaugural. More recently, and more sordidly, Bono appeared as a character witness at Peter Buck’s air rage trial. I’ve written elsewhere about why I think R.E.M. is a much better band than U2…the two main takeaways: I prefer the sound R.E.M. invented to the sound U2 invented, and, although both bands started to move outside their comfort zone after 1987 or so, R.E.M. proved considerably more versatile.

PIXIES. It’s a pretty damned impressive three-band-rhumba when Nirvana is (imo) the weakest of the three. Pixies 99, B-Boys 98, Nirvana 97.

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

I like Henrik's thing, so I'm going to steal it.

The Beatles (Not close)
Sgt. Pepper's > White Album > IV > Rubber Soul > Revolver

The Rolling Stones (Could have gone either way, but while they both have great albums, Stones' singles are better)
Blonde on Blonde > Beggars Banquet = Highway 61 Revisited > Exile on Main Street > Bringing It All Back Home > Let It Bleed > Aftermath > Sticky Fingers > Blood on the Tracks > Love and Theft

The White Stripes (It's really a tie, but Stripes deserve a vote)
OK Computer > White Blood Cells > Elephant > Kid A > Hail to the Thief

OutKast
Stankonia >>> Anything by Blur, and I like Blur.

Prince
Purple Rain > Sign 'o' the Times > 1999 > Thriller > Dirty Mind

Bruce Springsteen (Longevity wins it for him)
London Calling > Born in the U.S.A. > The Clash > Born to Run > The River

U2 (This will probably be close, so this vote is important and the hardest one I've had to make yet, dammit. Whichever one goes through will win the next round)
Joshua Tree > Automatic for the People > Achtung Baby > Document > Murmur > War

Nirvana
Nevermind > In Utero > Doolittle > Trompe Le Monde > Paul's Boutique

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

I like how you did that Henrik, so I'm going to steal the concept.

OK Computer > Kid A > White Blood Cells > De Stijl > Hail To the Thief

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

Well, sure, why not?

Revolver > Abbey Road > Rubber Soul > A Hard Day’s Night > Sgt. Pepper
(Zep wouldn’t crack the top 7)

Highway 61 Revisited > Let It Bleed > Bringing It All Back Home > Sticky Fingers > Blood on the Tracks

Kid A > OK Computer > Amnesiac > In Rainbows > White Blood Cells

Stankonia > Blur > Parklife > Modern Life Is Rubbish > Aquemini

Purple Rain > Off the Wall > 1999 > Thriller > Sign ‘O’ the Times

London Calling > The Clash > Sandinista! > The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle > Combat Rock

Murmur > Automatic for the People > Lifes Rich Pageant > Reckoning > Achtung Baby

Doolittle > Paul’s Boutique > In Utero > Nevermind > Surfer Rosa > Ill Communication

NOTE TO SLICK: I already voted! This is just an addendum…don’t count me twice!

(Fair play.)

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

I am popular!

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

Beatles
Dylan
BAH. My two favorites left in the competition against each other.
Radiohead
And my two favorites from the 90's on.
Outkast
Prince
The Clash
REM
Pixies
Crap. Pixies and Nirvana are going to split each others' votes, and open the door for the Beasties, aren't they?

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

Reviving my idea from UMT 1:

The Beatles vs. Led Zeppelin
Favorite Album: Led Zeppelin IV (#1 all time)
Favorite Song: Stairway to Heaven (#3 all time)
Honorary mentions: Abbey Road (Top 5), Revolver (Top 20), Led Zeppelin II (Top 30), Strawberry Fields Forever (top 10), Black Dog (Top 20)
Edge: Led Zeppelin
One of three that gets the nod over the Beatles for me.

Rolling Stones vs. Bob Dylan
Favorite Album: Sticky Finger (Top 10)
Favorite Song: Satisfaction (top 10)
Honorable mentions: Highway 61 Revisited (top 10), Bringing it all Back Home (top 10), Let it Bleed (top 30), Mr. Tambourine Man (top 2)
Edge: The Stones
Very close, both are great, this one may come down to the last vote.

Radiohead vs. The White Stripes
Favorite Album: OK Computer (Top 50)
Favorite Song: Too close to call between Seven Nation Army, Karma Police, Electioneering and Paranoid Andriod
Edge: Radiohead
Although I'm not a Radiohead fanatic like many on the forum, they're still pretty good. This was close, though.

Blur vs. Outkast
Favorite Album: Stanokania (top 100)
Favorite song: B.O.B. (top 100)
Honorable mentions: Hey Ya! (Top 150), Song 2 (Top 150)
Edge: Outkast
The closest thing to a blowout (except for the last matchuP) in my opinion.

Prince vs. Michael Jackson
Favorite Album: Thriller (top 30)
Favorite song: Beat it (top 30)
Honorable mentions: Purple Rain (top 50), Bad (top 50), When Doves Cry (Top 50)
Edge: MJ
This was an interesting matchup. Two pop icons of the 80's facing off. One will has the popularity in the "pop chart" people, the other has the popularity in the acclaimed/audiophiles. This one was very tough for me (sorry Moonbeam)

Bruce Springsteen vs. the Clash
Favorite album: Born in the USA (Top 10)
Favorite song: Dancing in the Dark (Top 50)
Honorable mentions: Glory Days (top 50), Should I Stay o Should I Go (top 100), Rock the Casbah (top 100), The Rising (Top 150)
Edge: The Boss
I bought London Calling a few weeks ago, I need to listen to it a few more times before I make a judgement on it. Either way, Springsteen wins.

U2 vs. R.E.M.
Favorite Album: Automatic for the People (top 30)
Favorite song: Sunday Bloody Sunday (top 20)
Honorable mentions: War (top 40), The Joshua Tree (top 50), Desire (Top 100), Mysterious Ways (Top 100), Radio Free Europe (Top 150), Drive (Top 150), The One I Love (top 100)
Edge: U2
Like MJ vs. Prince, this matchup we have the most drastic AM/Email splits. It was pretty close, however.

Pixies vs. The Beaties Boys vs. Nirvana
Favorite Album: In Utero (top 10)
Favorite song: All Appologies (top 50)
Honorable mentions: Doolittle (top 30), Heart Shaped Box (top 100), Debaser (top 100)
Edge: Nirvana
First off, how the hell did the Beastie Boys tie with Nirvana? Second off, this matchup (Nirvana vs. Pixies) also happened in UMT 1. If I recall, Nirvana won the battle of master vs. apprentice. Either way, I hope they both destroy the greatly inferior Beasties.

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

No right or wrong answer to any of these, really.

Beatles
Stones
Radiohead
Blur
MJ
Clash
Nirvana

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

The Beatles
Bob Dylan
Radiohead
Outkast
Prince
Springsteen
R.E.M.
Pixies

Surprisingly easy choices, though I do feel bad for the Clash and the Stones.

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

Prince
Michael Jackson: That's a gigantic drop from 1st to 2nd here.
U2
The Clash
Nirvana
Radiohead
The Beastie Boys
OutKast
Blur
The White Stripes
The Rolling Stones: If these guys really were my favorite of the 60s, I'd write off the whole decade.
Bruce Springsteen
Bob Dylan
R.E.M.
Pixies
Led Zeppelin: I feel dirty, Part 2. I can't believe I've had to resort to voting for these guys.
The Beatles

Re: UMT2: Sweet (17)

schleuse
Am I right in remembering that they didn’t like each other very much?

I think it was more a case of jealousy from the silly rivalry between them during the 80s, but you're right. There were several instances where the 2 clashed:

Prince refused to take part in the We are the World project, instead submitting "4 the Tears in Your Eyes". He thought it was cheesy (rightly), but I think it was more of a case of not wanting to be 2nd (or 10th or whatever) fiddle to MJ. In a hilariously obstinate turn, Prince was on stage during an anniversary performance in 1995, sticking out like a sore thumb by just sucking on a lollipop. Quincy Jones puts a mic in front of Prince's face, which prompts Prince to offer his lollipop to Quincy! Check out video footage here.

The Jackson family was suspicious of Prince. When Janet left for Minneapolis after her first 2 flop albums, her family warned her about sounding like Prince. So she employs the services of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Prince acolytes, and becomes a star.

Michael offered Prince a chance to duet with him on "Bad", but Prince refused, citing a refusal to allow Michael to open with "Your butt is mine" and knowing Michael would craft it in a way that he came out "on top".

There are other hilarious rumors, like Prince hitting on Michael's sisters when invited over to the Jackson house and this tidbit from mtv.com:

Engineer David Z told a story about Prince's attempt to play ping-pong with Jackson. "Michael drops his paddle and holds his hands up in front of his face so the ball won't hit him. Michael walks out with his bodyguard, and Prince starts strutting around like a rooster. 'Did you see that? He played like Helen Keller.'"

I think Prince was jealous of Michael's success, and Michael was jealous of Prince's mystique. Over time, though, Prince grew very complimentary of Michael. That doesn't stop members of their fanbases from getting into silly internet spats, though.
