Re: UMT2: Round of 64 / #3

I will also try the Stephan format.

Prince: I'd be bummed if he lost, but I don't put as much stock into these games as I used to. If he loses, he loses!
The Cure: I'm seeing them at the famed "Reflections" show on June 1st! Maybe I'll be on the DVD like I was with Madonna!
Michael Jackson: "Who Is It" came up on shuffle today. What a great, underrated song.
Lou Reed: An up-and-down solo career with some great highs.
Talking Heads: They've grown on me more and more over the years.
Ramones: Hey ho. Let's go! My favorite 70s punk band, unless Blondie counts.
Elvis Costello: Anybody have any recommendations other than the first 2 albums? This Year's Model is wonderful.
The Clash: Tough matchup.
Al Green: The compilation I have of his is nice, but I feel like I'll need to explore his albums soon enough.
The Police: Overrated to be sure, but they have some nice songs.
Black Sabbath: I respect them, but don't know enough by them.
Bruce Springsteen: I respect him, but know enough to think he'd never be a big favorite.
Elton John: I don't really respect him, probably due to overexposure to his sappy ballads from my mom.
Queen: Glam-lite isn't my thing.
John Lennon: Neither is anything by him.
AC/DC: Or them. Ugh.

Re: UMT2: Round of 64 / #3

As is usually the case for the 70s, there are no really difficult matchups, so I don’t have much to say. So, for today at least, I’ll jump on board and do this Stephan-style.

The Clash
Talking Heads
Prince
Elvis Costello
Ramones
Michael Jackson
Black Sabbath
Al Green
Lou Reed
The Police
The Cure
Bruce Springsteen
AC/DC
Queen
Elton John
John Lennon

Re: UMT2: Round of 64 / #3

#1 Prince - No contest... but the Lennon hate is a little over the top in my opinion.
#1 Talking Heads - Blow out of the day.
#1 The Cure - Although the Cure would lose to most of the other contestants today.
#2 The Police - Jackson is once again hurt by the exclusion of his sterling Jackson 5 singles.
#1 Bruce Springsteen
#2 Queen
#2 Ramones
#2 Lou Reed

Can't really go wrong with Armed Forces, probably the album that would be most up your alley. Get Happy!! is a little more soulful even though it's a bit uneven, and Imperial Bedroom is also definitely worth a listen.

Re: UMT2: Round of 64 / #3

Using basketball metaphors

#1 Prince (Lennon jumped out to an early lead, but it was tied at halftime and Prince pulled away to win handily)
#1 Talking Heads (Looked like a tough matchup after the first quarter, but Talking Heads cruised to a blowout)
#2 AC/DC (After a high-scoring first quarter this one became a defensive struggle. Once they fell behind, the Cure were so depressed they didn't even come out for the fourth quarter)
#2 The Police (This one was neck-and-neck until late in the fourth when MJ turned it over by molesting some kids and Stuart Copeland went in for the winning dunk)
#1 Bruce Springsteen (Tied at halftime, this one was all Boss in the second half)
#1 Elvis Costello (Even "We Will Rock You" playing on the loud speakers couldn't inspire Queen to much of a showing against Elvis C.)
#2 Ramones (The Ramones came out blazing, running up a sizable lead at halftime. Any second-half comeback attempts by John were repelled easily)
#1 The Clash (Reed wins the fourth quarter 28-2 to make it interesting, but the Clash hold on for the 103-101 victory)

Re: UMT2: Round of 64 / #3

#1 Prince- As much as a Beatles fan as I am, I've never been a big Lennon solo fan. For a guy who always talked about love and peace, his music was pretty selfish and inclusive. Worst lyric ever: "I just believe in me". The Baby Boomer mantra.
#1 Talking Heads
#1 The Cure
#1 Michael Jackson
#1 Bruce Springsteen
#2 Queen
#1 Elton John
#2 Lou Reed

.

I really love "Armed Force", "Imperial Bedroom" and "Blood & Chocolate" (aaahhhhh, I want you, incredible song), these three albums are in the same level of "this year's model" for me.
