Re: UMT2: 2nd round / #15

Today’s theme seems to be artists whose work has aged well up against artists who now seem like real period pieces…we’ve got about six of ‘em today.

MADONNA (She has a lot of music I would happily never hear again, and Billy is a lot of fun. Still, this isn’t really a serious contest.)

MORRISSEY (Boy, did I love Midnight Oil back in the 1980’s. But they’re a parade example of a what I wrote above about acts from this era not aging well.)

DURAN DURAN (Rio is one of the great iconic albums of the 1980’s. Right down to the Nagel cover.)

RUN-D.M.C. (I was ungenerous to Living Colour last round. But Run, D.M.C. and Jam Master Jay were Christopher Columbus: they brought together two previously separate worlds which have not stopped interacting since.)

PIXIES (Culture Club came in for ugly, and undeserved, prejudice even when they were popular. The Pixies, however, are in my all-time top five…brilliant, wide-ranging, and accomplished. I have them losing to R.E.M. in the 80s regional final.)

JANE’S ADDICTION (Since I learned that Grandmaster Flash had absolutely nothing to do with “The Message,” I’m just not sure how to evaluate him. I am, however, sure that Jane’s Addiction is my girlfriend’s favorite band, and she’s led me to appreciate them more than I once did.)

VIOLENT FEMMES (OMG, can we please, once and for all, remove the apostrophe from “Dexys”? Obviously, I really enjoy the UMT, but the former English teacher in me gets the screaming meemies over the rampant misspellings and mispunctuations.)

DINOSAUR JR. (A close call.)

#1 Madonna
Him: *smarl*
Me: *eyeroll*
#5 Midnight Oil
Love the Smiths, but on his own his misanthropy grows tiresome.
#3 Duran Duran
#7 Living Colour
#1 Pixies
#5 Jane's Addiction
#3 Violent Femmes
Though I like Dexy's Midnight Runners.
#2 Guns ‘N Roses
The one hair band that justifies the genre.

Re: UMT2: 2nd round / #15

#1 Madonna (She deserves her props)
#5 Midnight Oil (I have to disagree with a certain former English teacher and say that "Diesel and Dust," "Blue Sky Mining" and "Earth and Sun and Moon" have all aged just fine)
#3 Duran Duran (Nostalgia pick for sure)
#7 Living Colour (Tough call, but "Time's Up" is still one of my favorites)
#1 Pixies (Nothing against Culture Club, but this isn't close)
Don't care
#3 Violent Femmes ("Blister in the Sun" takes it)
#2 Guns ‘N Roses ("Let's all forget about "Chinese Democracy," shall we?)

Rocky Raccoon
#5 Midnight Oil (I have to disagree with a certain former English teacher and say that "Diesel and Dust," "Blue Sky Mining" and "Earth and Sun and Moon" have all aged just fine)

It's possible this is my own case of overexposure, Rocky...I may have just listened to those three albums so often that I burned out. Whereas with Moz, I only really started listening to his solo stuff in the last couple of years. So it goes.
