Damn! Still no Hendrix!
But, I've heard four of these albums already, so I might as well vote.
Michael Jackson - Bad
Great album, in my mind better the OTW, but I rest my case. Man in the Mirror, Smooth Criminal and The Way You Make Me Feel are all classics.
Eagles - One of These Nights
Both albums are decent, the only great song on either would be "One of These Nights" and maybe "Lyin' Eyes" for that, the Eagles win.
1. Slowdive - Souvlaki
2. Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On (This should probably win since it's pretty damn good, but I really enjoyed Souvlaki. The food, too.)
3. Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
4. Elvis Costello - Blood and Chocolate
5. Olivia Tremor Control - Music from the Unrealized Film Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle (Not sure how to describe this album, but weird is a little too negative. Peculiar maybe.)
6. Michael Jackson - Bad
7. Eagles - One Of These Nights
8. Prince - Lovesexy (In a discography full of awful covers, this one stands out. Quite possibly the worst cover ever.)
Eagles - One Of These Nights
Lots of excellent songs on this album, including: the title track, Take it to the Limit, Lyin' Eyes, Visions and After the Thrill is Gone
is preferred over
Elvis Costello - Blood and Chocolate
I wasn't thrilled with most of the songs on this album other than I Want You and Next Time Round
Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On vs
Slowdive - Sovlaki
I did not enjoy Sovlaki much, which I'm glad because I would have voted for Perfect From Now On anyway. It is currently my 3rd favorite album of all time and I seem to discover new details I love every time I listen to it. Which is quite often.
I haven't liked Tusk the times I've heard it in the past but I liked it this time. Bad has higher highs, lower lows. On one hand it has a few all time classics, on the other hand it's probably the biggest example of what MJ later became stereotyped for. The defensiveness, the unnecessary "HAH! YEAH! SHAMONA!" Tough vote, but I slightly go with Tusk.
Vote: Blood and Chocolate
Somebody I like doing something I like that he doesn't usually do. Win. Although I liked One Of These Nights more than other Eagles I've heard. More country, less overproduced.
Division 1: Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
Division 2: Elvis Costello - Blood and Chocolate (I imagine the Eagles album will be the soundtrack of my Hell)
Division 3: Olivia Tremor Control - Music From The Unrealized Film Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle
Division 4: Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On
This might be the toughest call I've had to make in the whole first round. My nominee Souvlaki, which I've considered the second-best shoegaze album to Loveless for some time now, faces an absolute buzzsaw in Perfect From Now On, which should be regarded as one of the definitive indie albums of the 90s. Souvlaki barely wins because I have more of an emotional connection to the songs, particularly my top-100 all-time track "When the Sun Hits." Perfect From Now On starts out incredibly forcefully with "Randy Described Eternity" and "I Would Hurt a Fly," but some of the other songs struggle to find a melody. In the end, I'll go with my nominee, but both albums are probably top 10 in the tournament for me.
I want to vote for more of these, but I haven't had much time to listen this week. I'll try to listen to Prince and Olivia Tremor Control, because Music From the Unrealized... has been on my wishlist for some time now.
Division 1:
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk vs
WINNER Michael Jackson - Bad
MJ win because I really dislike Fleetwood.
Division 2:
WINNER Elvis Costello - Blood and Chocolate vs
Eagles - One Of These Nights
I'm so happy someone choose this Elvis Costello's album. It's maybe the one I prefer in all his discography. An easy choice.
Division 3:
Olivia Tremor Control - Music From The Unrealized Film Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle vs
WINNER Prince - Lovesexy
9 songs, 9 perfect songs. Thanks again Prince.
Division 4:
WINNER Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On vs
Slowdive - Sovlaki
I discover Built to spill recently and It's a good disovering.
