Pearl Jam

All of the matches were very close. I think this was the strongest bracket of the tourney currently.

Re: UMT2: 90/00's Region, Bracket #3

#1 Pearl Jam

#8 DJ Shadow

#12 The Decemberists (You might think their rather pallid early-R.E.M. impression is what does it for me; actually, I kind of have to look past that. And I have never really gotten Primal Scream.)

#4 Franz Ferdinand (My new theory is that they’re to the 00s what Green Day was to the 90s. Time will tell, though…)

#14 Yo La Tengo (Oof. Tough, tough call. Jay-Z’s obviously the bigger name, and he deserves to move on, but I just enjoy YLT more.)

#6 Jeff Buckley

#10 Keane (Tight little band, and I don’t much care for Tupac. And I’m not being very nice to hip-hop today.)

#2 Wilco (Ragging on Matchbox 20 is too easy. But it’s appropriate.)

Re: UMT2: 90/00's Region, Bracket #3

#1 Pearl Jam
#9 The Roots
#12 The Decemberists
#4 Franz Ferdinand
#14 Yo La Tengo - Ouch. I think Jay-Z might be the 2d best artist from today's bracket. But Yo La Tengo is definitely the best.
#6 Jeff Buckley
#7 2Pac
#2 Wilco

#1 Pearl Jam
311: A few good songs, but perhaps the worst lyricists of all time?
#9 The Roots
#5 Primal Scream
#4 Franz Ferdinand
I put Usher in the category of 'Mainstream capable of being good. It was tempting to vote the other way, cause FF is a bit overrated.
#3 Jay-Z
#6 Jeff Buckley
pass
#2 Wilco
It is an easy matchup, but I have fond memories of MB20 from when I was a teenager. I certainly don't complain when they come on at work. There are a lot of genuinely good songs on their first two albums.

Re: UMT2: 90/00's Region, Bracket #3

PJ - Still putting out quality albums... 311 had a couple of quality songs, but I have 3 or 4 311 albums and they are difficult to listen to from beginning to end.

THE ROOTS - There are about 5% of quality $hit-hop artists and a whole lot of commercialized garbage where someone rhymes over a generic beat. These guys are at the top of that 5%!!!

Primal Scream - Really getting into The Decemberists more and more. I still love the first 3 or 4 Primal Scream albums more than The Decemberists.

Franz - Usher makes me ill!!!

Jay-Z - If You're having girl problems I feel bad for you son... I've got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one...

Alicia Keys - Sexy and talented... and a better swimmer. Sorry bad joke. Tough matchup for Mr. Buckley.

Keane - Pac had some decent tracks, "How Do You want It", "I Get Around", "Keep Ya Head Up"... but they just can't hang with the multitude of great Keane tracks.

Wilco - Not digging M20!!!

#1 Pearl Jam: They are sometimes tolerable, at least. Still, yikes.
#9 The Roots: A worthy vote for the next round!
#5 Primal Scream: I'm not overly familiar with either, but what I've heard by Primal Scream I enjoy more.
#4 Franz Ferdinand: Finally, a favorite!

#7 2Pac: If only to not vote for Keane.
#2 Wilco: If only to not vote for Matchbox 20.

Re: UMT2: 90/00's Region, Bracket #3

One thing I'm noticing about this game is that although I like the 90s and especially 2000s more than the 60s, I don't generally favor those with critical or broad commercial appeal. Perhaps it's due to being alive at the time, where I can wade through various media to really find what I like, whereas for the 60s, I've used sites like this and RYM for recommedations, naturally going to what is most acclaimed.

That said, the 90s/00s sure seem like a big disappointment based on the artists that seem to be populating this game.

Re: UMT2: 90/00's Region, Bracket #3

RESULTS:
Pearl Jam 88.2% / 311 11.8%
The Roots 54.8% / DJ Shadow 45.4%
Primal Scream 58.1% / The Decemberists 41.9%
Franz Ferdinand 67.6% / Usher 32.4%
Jay-Z 67.8% / Yo La Tengo 32.4%
Jeff Buckley 55.9% / Alicia Keys 44.1%
2Pac 64.5% / Keane 35.5%
Wilco 73.5% / Matchbox Twenty 26.5%

Re: UMT2: 90/00's Region, Bracket #3

Slick

Jeff Buckley 55.9% / Alicia Keys 44.1%

She must have totally owned Buckley in the non-AM votes...

Re: UMT2: 90/00's Region, Bracket #3

My speculation.

People who have heard a full album by both artists:
Jeff Buckley 80%/Alicia Keys 20%

People who have not:
Alicia Keys 100%/Jeff Buckley 0%

Re: UMT2: 90/00's Region, Bracket #3

The Buckley matchup is totaly disgusting.
Only one AMer (COUGH COUGH) voted for Alicia, yet she got almost half the votes.
And what's worse is he's facing Jay-Z in the next round, another sure favorite of the non-AMers.

I have a suggestion for Slick: at the top of each post of the brackets, say something like "only vote if you know both artists" and "do not vote based soley on the artist's output during the said decade" just to avoid confusion.
