Donosti (Basque name) or San Sebastián (Spanish name) is a lovely city by the sea (see) on the north coast of Spain. Amidst the politically convoluted Basque Country, Donosti managed to maintain a serene, distinguished and noble bearing. The blue seas and the grey skies of Donosti gave also name to a style, the "Donosti Sound", a subtle and fragile pop sound that tried to capture the beauty of the simplicity. A bunch of bands with "coincidence of adjectives: naïve, polite, lazy, delicate" in words of Guillermo Z del Águila for Rockdelux. The pioneers of the style were Aventuras de Kirlian on the late 80s but the Donosti Sound blossomed in the mid 90s with bands like Family, Le Mans, Daily Planet, El Joven Bryan and, of course, La Buena Vida ("The Good Life"). The influences of these bands included pop sounds from the 60s (Love, Beach Boys) to the 80s (Smiths, Orange Juice), with echoes of easy listening (Burt Bacharach), French pop (Serge Gainsbourg) and bossa (Astrud Gilberto). These bands shared also record labels (Siesta and Elefant) and the same cover art designer (the awesome Javier Aramburu, see here).
La Buena Vida was the band of that scene with a longer and most succesful career. Their fifth album Hallelujah! (2001) included my favourite song from them, Qué nos va a pasar (What's Gonna Happen With Us). A bittersweet song about the end of a relationship. About that point "when the conversation decline". About the uncertainity, about not knowing "what’s gonna happen with us". About the desolation (I will hide, now that you leave, I won’t go out anymore; what’s the use if I can’t see you). About the resignation that came with the last refrain (when time passes by, you will find someone else and you will forget me, that’s the usual thing, even if it maddens us, it’s always like that, and we try hard to conceal). About the disenchantment, necessary in singer Irantzu Valencia's own words: "It's the disenchantment necessary to become enchanted with something or someone again, you need to go through this disenchantment before".

I really wish albums 9 and 10 were switched with 11 and 12. The Glow, Pt. 2 should have been a shoo-in. I'm happy with Rings Around the World's high placement, though.

On the songs list, I'm really surprised Get Ur Freak On made it, that song has never seemed to have much support around here and has always been overrated by critics. It will probably be bottom-five for me.

Hypothetical question:

If Girls, Girls, Girls (the original) had received 162 points and the remix had received 100 points for a total of 262, would it have advanced to the next round?

262 would have been good enough for 10th place, but neither version got enough by itself. I think the answer to this question should be yes.
