Welcome to Week 20! We continue with bracket L2, featuring songs that have won one match and lost another match. The losers here are unfortunately out of the tournament!
Please listen to the songs before making your choice, and provide comments (however brief) to form the basis of your pick.
The deadline for Week 20 is 11:59 PM, March 12th AM time.
You can read the descriptions of why these songs were nominated in the rules thread.
Match L2.13:
M (Mathieu Chedid) - "Je dis aime" Serge Gainsbourg - "Cannabis"
Battle of the Frenchmen, and Serge destroys Mathieu.
Match L2.14: Wendy Rene - "After Laughter"
Lisa Germano - "Puppet"
I'm starting to enjoy "After Laughter" a lot, and I already liked Puppet quite a bit, so this is definitely the strongest bracket of the week for me. I'm in a '60s mood though, so Rene wins.
Match L2.15: The Bellrays - "Footprints on the Water"
Joanna Newsom - "Colleen"
I don't see the appeal in Newsom, so it's an easy choice.
Match L2.16:
Stereophonics - "Local Boy in the Photograph" OK Go - "A Million Ways"
Match L2.13:
M (Mathieu Chedid) - "Je dis aime"
Serge Gainsbourg - "Cannabis" WINNER
Again, like the vocal version best, but even instrumentally, Serge takes it.
Match L2.14:
Wendy Rene - "After Laughter"
Lisa Germano - "Puppet" WINNER
Probably my favorite discovery of the tournament.
Match L2.15:
The Bellrays - "Footprints on the Water"
Joanna Newsom - "Colleen" WINNER
I simply enjoy Newsom so much more.
Match L2.16:
Stereophonics - "Local Boy in the Photograph"
OK Go - "A Million Ways" WINNER
Not crazy about "Local Boy" and OK Go gives a solid effort here, even without video.
As I said previously, I don't like this Gainsbourg song.
Match L2.14:
Wendy Rene - After Laughter
Great classic, basis of one the Wu greatest songs.
Match L2.15:
Joanna Newsom - Colleen
Might have became one of my favorite Joanna's songs while I find Bellrays completely overrated (in France at least, I don't have the feeling it is the case elsewhere given their lack of success in AM)
Match L2.13 Winner - Serge Gainsbourg
A French battle! Gainsbourg's dirty funk wins easily.
Match 2.14 Winner - Wendy Rene
Two genres I like head to head. But "Puppet" just didn't grab me, "After Laguhter" has a little more.
Match 2.15 Winner - The Bellrays
Really tough call. I really like both and only Cannabis compares to the two this week. The Bellrays groove grabbed me a little more.
Match 2.16 Winner - Stereophonics
A finely delivered, if somewhat staid, rock song. Same could be said for OK Go's song, but the Stereophonics bumber grabs me more
M (Mathieu Chedid) - "Je dis aime": In the toughest match of the week, this just barely loses. I like its quirky delivery. Serge Gainsbourg - "Cannabis": Hearing the version with vocals warmed me up to this. With all of the respect he gets here, maybe it's time I checked out Serge's music.
Match L2.14:
Wendy Rene - "After Laughter": This just seems like average soul to me. Not bad at all, but not particularly good, either. Lisa Germano - "Puppet": Somehow lost amidst the 90s alterna-chick wave, this is a nice discovery.
Match L2.15:
The Bellrays - "Footprints on the Water": In another close, close match, this one just squeaks by.
Joanna Newsom - "Colleen": I hate to vote against her again, but I've got some obstacle with Joanna Newsom that hasn't been overcome, despite her obvious talent.
Match L2.16:
Stereophonics - "Local Boy in the Photograph": No thank you. OK Go - "A Million Ways": I'm not big on OK Go, but this is as good as they get for me.
