As many of us know, tommorow is Valentine's Day, the most romantic day of the year . So, before we puke listening to mushy love ballads, I decided to make a thread focusing on songs that are anti-valentine. Feel free to add to the list, and feel free to make it into a playlist.
Here they are:
-Love Will Tear Us Apart, Joy Division
-(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, The Rolling Stones
-It Ain't Me Babe, Bob Dylan
-God Only Knows, The Beach Boys (Debatable)
Damn, I accidently posted before I was finished.
Oh well. I'm still looking, But I have a few more:
-The Entire Rumours Album, Fleetwood Mac
-Heartbreaker, Led Zeppelin
-I Hate Myself For Loving You, Joan Jett
-Closer, Nine Inch Nails
-You Give Love a Bad Name, Bon Jovi
-It's Too Late, Carole King
-Should I Stay or Should I Go, The Clash
I'm sure I'll think of more.
god onlyknows is surelz the sweetest love song ever? "God only knows what i'd be without you?" "The world would mean nothing to me, so what good would living do me?"
apologies for the typing errors, i am in germany and they use a diffferent keyboard layout
I'll be Pitchforky on this one, but I would go with :
Mountain Goats - No Children
Shellac - Prayer to God
Bright Eyes - The Calendar Hung Itself
God Only Knows is a great Valentine's Day song!
"Fuck You," "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" are good examples for this topic.
There's a reason I put "God Only Knows" as 'debatable'.
On one hand, it's a beuatiful love song, with lines such as "God only knows what I'd be without you."
On the other, it's got lines such as "I may not always love you."
That was probably the goal of the song though, to spark arguemnts on music blogs about it's meaning.
Here's another one - Prince's "Empty Room". It's from 1995 but was never released on an album. Prince being Prince, though, he still made a video for it. The video is over-the-top cheesy posing at its most painful, but thou shalt not fuck with Prince's guitar playing.

Billy Bragg - "Valentine's Day Is Over"
Never Talking to You Again- Husker Du
Ever Fallen In Love?- Buzzcocks
Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me- The Smiths
How Soon Is Now?- The Smiths
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now- The Smiths
I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris- Morrissey
Why Bother?- Weezer
Yesterday- The Beatles
No Distance Left to Run- Blur
Fuck You- Cee Le Green
Bitches Ain't Shit- (either the Dr. Dre or Ben Folds version works fine)
Blue Monday- New Order
She's Not There- The Zombies
Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?- Moby
Can't get much more succinct than "Song for the Dumped" by Ben Folds Five:
So you wanted to take a break
Slow it down some, and have some space
Well, fuck you too!
Give me my money back
I want my money back, you bitch
I want my money back
And don't forget
And don't forget to give me back my black T-shirt
I wish I hadn't bought you dinner
Right before you dumped me on your front porch
Give me my money back (etc.)
Madonna's output, a few :
"Bye Bye Baby"
"The Power of Good-Bye"
Even though "Love Song" (with Prince) includes the lyric, "This is not a love song..." it's not really a love-downer track.
One of my favorite anti-Valentine tracks:
Scandal, "Goodbye to You"
