I think I prefer the RYM charts. Most of my favorite albums place higher on RYM, and there's more variety in terms of jazz, metal, and experimental albums placing highly. Also, lesser-known albums do much better on RYM than on AM.

There's something to be said for both lists. Lesser known albums do better on RYM, but more divisive albums do better on AM.

This is probably due to the manner of voting. One is based on sum of acclaim and the other is based on average of opinion.

Personally, I'd rather hear an album half the people rate 10/10 and half rate 0/10 than one that everybody rates 5/10. Which is why I'd tend to favor a sum of acclaim approach.

Here's something that'd be interesting if you could find a way to pull it off without doing everything manually:

Go through the RYM pages, only instead of taking the mean, take the root mean square. That approach would probably return a better list, because divisive albums would rate higher than albums everybody agrees are just pretty good.

This way, 50% 5 stars + 50% 1 star = 3.61 rating.

I wonder if I could set up a script so you could just glean the distribution of an album directly from the source HTML. Do that, set up a script to query RYM directly from provided artist and album names...I should actually try this.

Also, another thing I was hoping to do that I think would produce "better" results would be to have albums that rank very high on only one chart and low on another chart (i.e. Sex Pistols) to have a stronger weight than an album that would fall in the 500-1000 range on both charts.

Any suggestions?

I think the amalgamted list is really awesome - it seems to be a pretty accurate representation of the critic's "cannon."

The only thing I can't get over is how low Pet Sounds is on the RYM chart. 31???? Also Moonbeams comment about the low positions of pop and r&b artists also stands.

I checked, and it looks like the URL of the rating page for each movie is derived directly from the artist and album name. Also, it looks like the numbers are contained directly in the source.

So, what I need to figure out how to do in order to do this is to read in an HTML page and navigate the DOM nodes the way you can in Javascript, but from a non-web based language.

@Moonbeam: I think the reason for that is Madonna gets blamed for the crap churned out by the people she influenced, so she gets more votes from people outside her fan base than metal groups do.

I should add that I appreciate the massive amount of time it must have taken to create such a list, Daniel. I may have my issues with RYM's list, but it still is a widely-used resource, and it is indeed interesting to see the combined results.

Of all these albums, Sign 'O' the Times has the highest average rating, but is loses against most of the others because of fewer ratings. Isn't that strange? I would find it much more understandable if Prince had a lot of votes but was voted down because prog and metal fans think he is too much pop. I thought that only people who like Minutemen and Patti Smith listen to them, while a lot more people would vote both for and against Prince.

I mean, any time you walk into a grocery store, a restaurant, a department store, or turn on a variety show, you're immediately subjected to crappy music that was influenced by Madonna. It's just not avoidable. You're going to hear it whether you like it or not.

Whereas, you don't ever have to hear crappy stuff influenced by Metallica if you don't want to, unless you've got a roommate who plays it or something.

I hope that comment was more negative toward the Madonna wanna-bes and not Madonna herself. I do agree that the wanna-bes do not have the goods that she does.

I had not checked out Rate Your Music- I did so a couple of days ago and started ratings stuff.

HolidayG1- I have not entered every title that I own as of yet. :)

I must admit, I am a big compilations guy. I do have studio albums and such for some acts, but I probably have more compilations than regular albums.
