Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

And, like an appendix to this 50s and 60s poll and as I promised in January, here it is the song poll of the first half of the XX Century. I appreciate your efforts of going back in time to those wonderful decades filled with music surprises but I'm going to ask to go back even further, to the songs released during the period from 1900 to 1949. But, unless the rest of the poll, this time I'm going to have a lax concept of "released". We are dealing with an early period of phonographic industry and it’s difficult to find exact information about the date of release so I'm going to include every song you want to vote for (unless it was previously voted and accepted for the 50s poll). With "released" I mean been exposed to public within this period of 50 years, no matter if it was released on record, featured in films or published as sheet music (classical works). I could even accept songs composed during this period that were popular but not from any particular well-known version, that's the case of some traditional or folk songs (for instance I could vote for songs like "Ay Carmela" that the republican anti-fascist troops used to sing during the Spanish Civil War).

The important thing here is your participation, without your involvement the final list is not going to be significant. That's why I'm going to admit lists of every size but it would be preferable lists of at least 10 songs (preferably with ranking). I will count the points for the first 100 songs but of course you can send longer lists. For the scoring I'm going to use the formula that Moonbeam posted here and I reproduce here too:

12.28344771/TAN((position+10)/90)

The points allocated for each of the top 100 positions will be:

1 100

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

A while ago I made a Spotify list of 280 pre-1950 songs that are included at AM or placed high in the RYM charts. Enjoy!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

I think this is a wonderful idea!

I started working on my list, but as I am not as familiar with this era of music as I am with anything post-rock-and-roll, there will be a lot of soundtrack songs and a lot of Satchmo :P

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

Thanks Henrik for the spotify link

I think the AM list of 1900-1949 songs is a great sample of pre-war and wartime music.

Lots of styles : pop, blues, jazz, country & western, soundtracks...

It will help me a lot in the making of my list. While I could easily do a 500 + list of blues and country material, I'm not so familiar with other styles (jazz, soundtracks, Tin Pan Alley tunes, even world music).

If you want information on pre-1950 music, please check my old blog River's invitation

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

2 more things :

1) I'm making a 1900-49 spotify playlist

2) You can take a look my list of favorite root music compilations there are tons of prewar stuff

3) If you can't access spotify and you're interested, please check out on River's Invitation or tell me.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

To Mindrocker : you're a discographic hero !!
One day you'll have to tell us about your record collection, your sources !!

And I share your nb1 of the 1890s, one of the most fascinating recordings ever made !!

To Honorio : the time span (50years) is so huge that there are chances that only a few songs will get mutiple votes. Maybe it would be interesting to make a list of the artists that got the higher nulber of votes (all songs considered).

Thanks for the compliments guys!

aka whatta successful handover

indeed! a big weird respectness bag @Mindrocker, Charlie Driggs and the rest of that minor bunch for keeping the AMF heritage alive... time to hit the button though, cause web lives are amusingly tough yet disturbingly short, so thanks for all the fizz, i finally found me a bubble to ride

Made it, Ma! Bottom of the thread!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

Well, here they are, a wonderful first set of lists from the Three Wise Men, a selected subgroup inside the Magnificent Seven. Charlie Driggs, Mindrocker and sonofsamiam, the AM Forum Magi, gave us as a pre-Christmas present their three great lists filled with gold, incense and myrrh (and excellent suggestions for our own lists).
If we expand it to four (The Four Horsemen) adding the great recommendations of nicolas we could have already a great overall list, please go to his excellent Spotify playlist and to the 1940-1949 recommendations thread, happily recovered recently. But keep on voting, every new list will be extremely welcome.
About my own recommendations: I’m now making my own list and I’ve divided my choices in 4 groups of aproximately 25 songs each:
a) Classical and soundtracks.
b) World music (popular songs not coming from the US).
c) US folk, country and blues.
d) Jazz and popular.
I got already the first group, with strong influence from sonofsamiam’s classical choices (and I guess that group B is going to be influenced by Charlie Driggs, C by Nicolas and D by Mindrocker, good masters, isn’t it?). You can listen to it in my own Spotify playlist after my Top 10. Anyway this is my provisional Group A list (classical and soundtracks):
1. SERGEY PROKOFIEV "Romeo and Juliet, Suite No. 2 for Orchestra, No. 1 Montagues and Capulets" (1936, #50 in my all-time list)
2. JUDY GARLAND "Over the Rainbow (From 'The Wizard of Oz')" (1939, #66)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

Honorio and Sonofsamiam, did you see my (deleted) question from yesterday? I wondered whether you have been voting for the scenes or the whole parts of Le sacre du printemps. My favourite scenes are "Sacrificial Dance (The Chosen One)" and "The Augurs of Spring: Dances of the Young Girls", but if you voted for the whole parts I should probably do the same.

I voted for the 2 parts, as the CD I primarily listen to just has it broken out into tracks that way. I'm absolutely cool with switching my #3 vote to "Sacrificial Dance" though -- that would be my favorite individual section.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

I'm back in the forum after a 4 day period when my connexion was broken. I fell ill at the same time with a severe throat infection. VERY painful. My ears were OK though, and without Internet I could pick in my physical record collection, so there'll be a lot more country, blues and old jazz on my list.
I see that a lot more beautiful lists fell in my absence, I also heard that something happened. I don't know exactly what but some data was lost and recovered.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

Well, Nicolas, the whole thread about the 1900-1949 recommendations dissappeared!! Fortunately it's back now.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

The lists here are all so great, Fred, Henrik, Honorio, nice recent additions.

Also, to be official, please note that my #2 should be this specific Rite of Spring section:

Le sacre du printemps: Danse Sacrale (L'Élue) (alt. Seconde Partie: Le Sacrifice)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs from 1900 to 1949

I have almost no expertise in pre-rock music whatsoever, but I'll take a stab at a list.

1. Thelonious Monk - Round Midnight
2. Benny Goodman - Sing, Sing, Sing
3. Leadbelly - Whoa Back Buck
4. Leadbelly - Where Did You Sleep Las Night?
5. Robert Johnson - Sweet Home Chicago
6. Uncle Dave Macon - Way Down the Old Plank Road
7. Glenn Miler - In the Mood
8. Woody Guthrie - This Land is Your Land
9. Scott Joplin - Maple Leaf Rag
10. Cab Calloway - Minnie the Moocher
11. Robert Johnson - Cross Road Blues
12. Hot Lips Page - I Won't Be Here Long
13. George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue
14. Robert Johnson - Hellhound on My Trail
15. Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 8 (does this count?)
16. Claude Debussy - Clair de Lune

I really need to get into more jazz. Davis and Coltrane are the only jazz musicians I've really explored and the only other one besides those two I know fairly well is Charles Mingus. I really should get into Bird, Duke, Monk, etc.

Re: Favorite Songs from 1900 to 1949

Many thanks everyone for your lists. Not many lists but the lists that came were absolutely spectacular. Now please be patient for the unveiling of the results, the compiling of the votes of the 50s poll (with the Excel spreadsheet) are easy to do. But it’s not the case with the 1900-1949 poll, a lot of songs to check and count. Moreover I’m currently extremely busy with my daily work, so you can expect first results this weekend (maybe). I’ll open a new thread with the results.
Many thanks again, boys, you’re wonderful.
