I really liked Halcyon Digest, but I agree that it carries a lot less weight than the incredible albums released by Big Boi and The National. The jump can be explained by Deerhunter's very high EU rating, an area where High Violet and SLL are unfortunately lacking. The EU critics are usually a little off-base with everyone else; last year they were the only region to not have MPP at 1.

Which is precisely why a lot of critics love them so much, I think - that ramshackle, "Oh, this old song? We just threw it together out of what was lying around" quality that you either completely go with, or don't. For my money, if Cox and friends simply concentrated on what they do well - a singular mix of power pop and shoegaze - Deerhunter could make beginning-to-end great albums, instead of albums containing great moments. HALCYON DIGEST comes closer than they've ever been before, though.

No, more tracks like Sailing do very little for me indeed.

Personally, I find the middle run is super strong and the closing track gorgeous. The rest I can take or leave. Bit of a shame.

And yes Harold: give me an albums worth of tracks like Nothing Ever Happened, Twilight At Carbon Lake, Never Stops, Desire Lines, Helicopter, Saved By Old Times etc and it'd be mindblowingly good.

Maybe I need to check out the allegedly visceral sounds of Cryptograms. I'm listening to Logos now for the first time, and liking it, but it does seem like Cox is moving away from the propulsive rhythms and captivating hooks that make half of Deerhunter's output so damn strong.
