Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Well, so this is the last year of our poll, hope you’re enjoying this wonderful trip (that it’s not over, we’re still flying). Welcome to the Fragment 10 of the 50s & 60s acclaimed music forum poll, this month dedicated to 1969. If you think that 1967 and 1968 were good years for music, I personally think that 1969 was even better. A year of ups and downs, of Woodstock and Altamont, the luminous 60s ended with a bright explosion of music that gave place to the darker 70s, letting us (again) with tons of great albums and songs to vote. C’mon, we’re waiting for you.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums with your personal choices, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of October. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

You may find useful to have a look at the albums and songs lists of:
- Acclaimed Music: albums and songs.
- Rate Your Music: albums, songs and, since some of the album considered compilations in Rate Your Music are eligible on this poll, the compilations.

Have a nice poll…

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

As I always post at the end of the month, here are my lists in progress (final lists on oct. 31st)

Favorite albums of 1969

Favorite songs of 1969 (Spotify)

Favorite songs of 1969 (grooveshark)

The song playlists don't feature any Beatles songs because you don't get them on those sites. Spotify ain't got no Dylan or Led Zep while Grooveshark has them.

I'm surprised not to see a single mention of Fairport Convention other than my own. You guys need to listen to more folk rock!

I just listened to White Noise. Pretty cool stuff, however they might not make it onto my lists because of the murderous competition this year.

But Moonbeam, I would recommend White Noise to you, since you're a fan of both Can and horror movies. I hope I didn't raise the expectations too high!?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Honorio, it must be funny compiling these lists every month. In the first days, you get all the experts (the CSI guys from Miami) : sonof, nj, Charlie, Mindrocker et al, and you get those weird general lists with White Noise and pharao Saunders then come the more AM-like lists, so exit Laura Nyro and Rainbows in curved hair then on the last day nic votes for a couple blues and French extra albums and the Beatles win in the end.

(there's absolutely no moral judgement in this post, everyone is free of making his own AM list, it's in the Constitution of the USAM)

Yes, Nicolas, you (almost) nailed it. I used “almost” because that CSI group and their idiosyncratic but fascinating lists (you can use weird too, the CSI will not find it pejorative at all, isn’t it?) are slowly permeating our more conventional lists, including mine. Last year was refreshing to see the numbers 23 (Os Mutantes), 24 (The United States of America) and… 41!! (Begin) of main AM list getting into our Top 15. And AM’s #15 (Odessey and Oracle) ending as our #2. It’s true that The Beatles wins at the end (and deservedly in my opinion) but these different but confluent approaches make our lists much better that the ones from the critics.
And, of course, your blues and French choices are especially welcome.

Fred
OK, I surrender. Put "Karma" with Pharoah Sanders" at position no. 6 in my album list, please!

Done, Fred, but I’ll miss that lonely point to the underrated but excellent “20/20”

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

I'm sure Laura Nyro will get her due in the next Moderate game.

I think I can pencil United States Of America into the elimination bracket right now.

You can always remove "The Gilded Palace Of Sin" from the list. Actually, do so, please!

This is fantastic pop candy, all albums on discs with two albums on them:

1967 Smiley Smile 3.66 rate/ Wild Honey 3.53 rate
1968 Friends 3.75 rate / 1969: 20/20 3.61 rate
1970 Sunflower 3.87 / 1971 Surf's Up 3.82

Yeah, good one

But most of the time I just think of them (in France, the series name is "Les Experts : Miami")

The same thing happened when I compiled the songs list. It was interesting to receive each list and see what category each voter fell into: "CSI," AM canon, "traditional canon" (those who voted for "Stairway to Heaven," "Let It Be," "Brown Eyed Girl," etc), and then some who fit into no particular category (Moonbeam, for example).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Even for someone like me who likes much more post-punk era music than what has been done before, it is very hard not to find things to like in 69 (while, as I recall it, years from 73 to 76 were nightmares).

Thanks a lot Honorio for your live results topic, helped me discover lot of songs... which I mostly did not like much, except for Scott Walker which don't have songs in my list but easily got in my album list.

1) Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
2) Nick Drake - River Man
3) David Bowie - Space Oddity
4) MC5 - Kick Out The Jams
5) The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
6) Nick Drake - 'Cello Song
7) The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
8) Jacques Dutronc - L'opportuniste
9) B.B. King - The Thrill is Gone
10) The Beatles - I Want You (She's so Heavy)
11) Isaac Hayes - Walk On By (and it's the base sample of one of my favorite hip-hop songs)
12) The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
13) CCR - Fortunate Son
14) The Stooges - 1969
15) Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer
16) King Crimson - The Court of the Crimson King
17) Shocking Blue - Love Buzz
18) The Stooges - No Fun
19) The Beatles - Octopus's Garden (maybe Beatles most underrated song, it's Ringo but it's good anyway)
20) Johnny Cash - A Boy Named Sue

Albums :

1) Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
2) Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
3) King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King
4) The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
5) The Stooges - The Stooges
6) Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul
7) Scott Walker - Scott 4
8) Nino Ferrer - Nino Ferrer
9) Johnny Cash - At San Quentin
10) Tim Buckley - Happy Sad

I don't like Abbey Road much, don't think much of Let it Bleed, really dislike Led Zep II, have been very disappointed by Kick Out The Jams, never got Sly and the Family Stone, find Trout Mask Replica impossible to listen...
And for the French artists of the 60s that I enjoy (namely Boby Lapointe, Jacques Dutronc, Françoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg and Nino Ferrer), it's a pretty deceptive year compared with the previous ones.

I find Trout Mask Replica impossible to listen...

I also find most of Trout Mask Replica very difficult to listen to. There are four songs that I can listen to without cringing, including: Dali's Car, Frownland, My Human Gets Me Blues and Veteran's Day Poppy. If there are any fans of Trout Mask Replica, I would appreciate it if you could recommend any other songs on this album that merit additional listenings.

Moonlight on Vermont is definitely the album's best and most accessible song. Pachuco Cadaver and When Big Joan Sets Up are also pretty solid. I am probably one of the bigger fans of TMR on this board, and when the album clicks, it is really incredible. There are a few songs I still have trouble listening too, though, and I understand it's not for everyone.

On another note, AllMusic's critics just released their picks for the best albums and songs of 1969. I was just wishing a few days ago that they would do an AllMusic Loves 1969, and I got just that.

Hi , Harpo, welcome back to the 50s and 60s poll. If I remember well, you participated in the very first edition (1950-1952) and now in the very last! Please I need to know if your list is ranked or not, I mean “Ummagumma” your #1 and “From Elvis in Memphis” your #26. If not, I can assign 5 points to every album but only to the first 20 albums. I’m going to consider it ranked from Pink Floyd till The End (I mean the band, of course ) but if think otherwise please let ne know.
Harpo, excellent list, by the way.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

I have to say that Karma sounds great

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Moondog's self-titled album is such a revelation. I don't see how anyone could listen to songs like "Symphonique #6" or "Lament #1" and not enjoy them. I also got the Scott Walker, Amon Duul II, Can, and David Axelrod albums based on recommendations in this thread. All of these sound very good on first impression.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

The amount of good music in 1969 is simply frightening.

Other great albums I should listen to : Stand! (how come I've never heard it, I don't know), Happy Sad, Soft Machine's Volume 2, Moondog, and so many others

I'm also beginning to think `69 was the best year. The Can and Amon Duul II albums are fantastic too.

Hi Honorio,
yes I've been away and now I'm back - and yes my list should be numbered as you suggest (Elvis at #26 etc)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

OK, Colosseum's Valentyne Suite is fantastic. Thanks AM!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Sorry my friends for this long silence, my computer broke down on Sunday the 10th and it’s not fixed yet (I hope that it can be recovered without losing the files).
I already checked the eligibility of the 1969 votes so far but since the comments I wrote are inside my broken computer I’m going to write it again (I’m afraid that the “results live” will have to wait instead, even we have already a Top 125). For the complete explanation please go to the eligibility thread:
- Eumir Deodato’s Superstrut: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1973), Fred’s list move one place up from #3.
- The Rolling Stones’ Can’t You Hear Me Knocking: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1971), Fred’s list move one place up from #11.
- The Temptations’ Cloud Nine (song): not eligible for 1969 (released in 1968 ), Slick’s list move one place up from #10.
- Cream’s Crossroads: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1968 ), Slick’s list move one place up from #19.
- The Ventures’ Hawaii Five-O: eligible for 1969 although some sources date it as released in 1968.
- Laura Nyro’s Save the Country: eligible for 1969 although there was a previous version released in 1968.
- Townes Van Zandt homonymous album: eligible for 1969 although some sources date it as released in 1970.
- Jacques Dutronc’s L’opportuniste: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1968 ), Nassim’s list move one place up from #8.
- Neil Young’s debut album: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1968 ).

I wonder where my brain went for holiday that day...

"Can't you hear me knocking" , in 1969, yikes.

Lucky me the new nos. 19 and 20 are equally good replacements...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Albums:

01. The Kinks - Arthur (Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire)
02. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
03. King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
04. Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
05. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
06. Pharoah Sanders - Karma
07. The Beatles - Abbey Road
08. Moondog - Moondog
09. Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
10. The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
11. Amon Duul II - Phallus Dei
12. Can - Monster Movie
13. MC5 - Kick Out The Jams
14. Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
15. Scott Walker - Scott 4

What a great year. Among albums I got based on recommendations in this thread, the Moondog, Amon Duul II, Can, and Scott Walker albums were good enough to become favorites, while David Axelrod and Isaac Hayes fell short (though they will be present on my songs list).

great lists Miguel ! as you will see, we'll have some songs and albums in common (Townes, Cohen, Suspicious Minds, etc..)

at last someone votes for The Israelites !

and I love La Lupe and Paco ibanez too (but they won't be in my top 20).

Agree, excellent choices. And I'm glad that someone included at last "Break Away", one of the most underated gems of The Beach Boys.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Oddly there was no 1969 album in my all-time list but when it came the time to compile a Top 25 I ended with a Top 30 but I could easily have filled a Top 50. 1969 was the best year for pop music? Some may argue but at least it's a serious candidate.

My favourite Spanish song of 1969: Paco Ibáñez's "Palabras para Julia"

Exile. And the most painful of it all, the exile for political reasons. A different ideology is enough to keep you apart from the country and people you love. After the Spanish Civil War many republicans were forced to leave Spain just to save their own lives (and their families’). Many of them went to Latin America (particularly Mexico) but most of them went to France looking for the paradise of democracy just to face another war even more cruel.
That was the case of Paco Ibáñez's father, a militant of CNT, the Spanish anarchist party. Running away from the reprisals of Spanish fascist troops he found a Paris under the German occupation, he was arrested and taken to a concentration camp. Paco returned with his mother to the Basque Country in Spain and then again to France to meet his father after his liberation. With that vital background and under the influence of Georges Brassens and Atahualpa Yupanqui, Paco began to sing in the early 60s and by the end of the decade he was already an icon for the Spanish anti-fascist youth.
The fact that he could sing from France, without having to face the iron censorship of Spanish regime like the singer-songwriters living in Spain, helped a lot. But this advantage does not hide the intrinsic qualities of Paco as a singer-songwriter. His speciality was to turn into vibrant hymns/songs the best poems in Spanish language, being from contemporary poets (like José Agustín Goytisolo, Blas de Otero or Gabriel Celaya) or classis poets (like Luis de Góngora or Francisco de Quevedo). It is refreshing listening to the audience of the Olympia in Paris laughing and applauding the mocking verses of Arcipreste de Hita originally written in the XIV Century. But his main merit was to introduce to a big audience the audacious work of the poets of the Generation of 27 (including Federico García Lorca or Rafael Alberti) and the Generation of 36 (like Miguel Hernández), mostly forbbiden in Spain for their political relevance.
The song selected, "Palabras para Julia" ("Words for Julia") came from his third album, Paco Ibáñez 3, released in 1969, undoubtedly his best year. A concert in La Sorbonne in May of 1969 (to commemorate the anniversary of the May 1968 riots) achieved for him a big notoriety inside the French university students. The release of his third album and an acclaimed concert at Olympia in December of 1969 suppose his zenith and also a ban to perform live in Spain that was going to last for five years, until the death of the dictator.
But in "Palabras para Julia" there were little traces of the explicitly political themes of many Ibáñez songs. Based on a poem by José Agustín Goytisolo addressed (quoting the own singer’s presentation for his Olympia concert) to "une garçonne, à une enfant plutôt; et c’est le père qui essaie de... qui parle plutôt a sa fille et lui dis: tu verras, la vie sera belle / malgré tout, malgré tout la vie sera belle / un jour tu auras des amis, tu auras de l’amour / il y aura moments aussi où tu va te sentir seule ou perdue / mais toujours rappelle-toi de ces mots que j’ai écrit / en pensant à toi, en pensant à toi / comme je pense" ("a little girl, even a child; it’s the father that tries to... that talks to his daughter and says to her: you will see, life will be beautiful / despite all, despite all, life will be beautiful / someday you will have friends, you will have love / there will be moments too when you will feel alone and lost / but always remember this words I wrote / thinking of you, thinking of you, just like I think now". Beautiful words sing solemnly by Paco Ibáñez backed only by his own guitar and a cello.

PALABRAS PARA JULIA
Composer: José Agustín Goytisolo / Paco Ibáñez
Performer: PACO IBÁÑEZ
First release: 1969 ("Paco Ibáñez 3" album)
Length: 4’05”

Tú no puedes volver atrás
porque la vida ya te empuja
como un aullido interminable,
interminable.

Te sentirás acorralada,
te sentirás perdida o sola,
tal vez querrás no haber nacido,
no haber nacido.

Pero tú siempre acuérdate
de lo que un día yo escribí
pensando en ti,
pensando en ti,
como ahora pienso.

La vida es bella, ya verás
como a pesar de los pesares
tendrás amigos, tendrás amor,
tendrás amigos.

Un hombre sólo, una mujer,
así tomados de uno en uno,
son como polvo en el camino,
no son nada.

Entonces siempre acuérdate
de lo que un día yo escribí
pensando en ti,
pensando en ti,
como ahora pienso.

Otros esperan que resistas,
que les ayude tu alegría,
que les ayude tu canción
entre sus canciones.

Nunca te entregues ni te apartes,
junto al camino nunca digas:
no puedo más y aquí me quedo,
y aquí me quedo.

Entonces siempre acuérdate
de lo que un día yo escribí
pensando en ti,
pensando en ti,
como ahora pienso.

La vida es bella, ya verás
como a pesar de los pesares
tendrás amigos, tendrás amor,
tendrás amigos.

No sé decirte nada más
pero tú debes comprender
que yo aún estoy en el camino,
en el camino.

Pero tú siempre acuérdate
de lo que un día yo escribí
pensando en ti,
pensando en ti,
como ahora pienso.

WORDS FOR JULIA

You can't come back
because life is pushing you
like an endless howl,
endless.

You will feel trapped,
you will feel lost or alone,
maybe you will regret having been born,
been born.

But always remember
what I wrote one day
thinking of you,
thinking of you,
just like I'm thinking now.

Life is beautiful, you will see
how, despite the sorrows,
you will have friends, you will have love,
you will have friends.

A single man, a woman,
as taken one by one,
are like dust on the road,
they're nothing.

Then always remember
what I wrote one day
thinking of you,
thinking of you,
just like I'm thinking now.

Some wait for your resistence,
for the help of your joy,
for the help of your song
amidst their songs.

Never give up or move over,
never say beside the path:
I can't go on and I stay here,
and I stay here.

Then always remember
what I wrote one day
thinking of you,
thinking of you,
just like I'm thinking now.

Life is beautiful, you will see
how, despite the sorrows,
you will have friends, you will have love,
you will have friends.

Life is beautiful, you will see
how, despite the sorrows,
you will have friends, you will have love,
you will have friends.

I got nothing more to say
but you should know
that I'm still on the road,
on the road.

But always remember
what I wrote one day
thinking of you,
thinking of you,
just like I'm thinking now.

Hope you like this wonderful song. Please keep on voting, next Friday I will fly to London for the Halloween weekend (“Halloween in London”, good title for a song, isn’t it?). When I come back I will continue with the vote counting and the posting of the results.

I didn't realize that the Yes album was released in 1969. It should have been in my top 10.

great lists Miguel ! as you will see, we'll have some songs and albums in common (Townes, Cohen, Suspicious Minds, etc..)

Agree, excellent choices. And I'm glad that someone included at last "Break Away", one of the most underated gems of The Beach Boys.

Thanks, guys.

Nevertheless, as pointed Honorio in the “elegibility thread”, I also think that the self-titled album by Townes Van Zandt should be considered as of 1970, but by now many people already have included in their lists….
At that time, I was the only one that included in the Forum Poll of the best albums and songs of 1970.

I think Break Away is a well-known song, but I guess there are two reasons for his absence at the polls: it was only released as a single and, surprisingly, is not listed in the "The Top Songs from 1969" in Acclaimed Music.

Same thing happened to Henry with the debut album by Yes, many people would have remembered it if they had seen on any list.

And yes, Nic: “Puro teatro” is a great song, perhaps my favorite Spanish American song. Here is a translation to English.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

To be honest, my Who favorite song of 1969 is "Go to the Mirror", but I picked "We're not gonna..." because it's almost the same song and it would give it a chance to appear in the final top 20.

Anyways, the best version of that song IMO is this one :

PS : Honorio, I love your posts about Spanish music and i even have a little idea... I'll tell you about it

Ah, Nicolas- that would be culled from a track on your #3 LP for the year! Great lists, btw.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

I'm quite surprised that so many listed Townes Van Zandt's self-titled album. Is it really eligible? I have this album and the copyright year on the sleeve reads 1970.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Yes, it is, even though there is a controversy. Go to the 50-60s eligibility thread to read all about it.

And btw, Mindrocker, thanks for your list. I really appreciated your #1 song by Bobby Bland.

Well, as you can see on the eligibility thread and as Nicolas pointed, there was some degree of controversy. Miguel did the research and some sources dated it in 1969 and other in 1970, the second ones seemed more reliable but I decided to accept 1969. But probably I was wrong...

Many thanks, nicolas. I just can’t wait to know about your idea. Anyway I know I’m gonna like it, that’s for sure.
By the way your new blog looks great, probably I’m the only one here that knows about the greatness of the songs that are still to come. AM people, just you wait. The greatest French song are coming...

15. Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

First results, the best albums of 1969. 24 voters this time, only one less than the previous edition (Stephan).
Again, as nicolas predicted, Laura Nyro exited the list and The Beatles won at the end.
And Laura was not the only one to exit the list, in fact none of the Top 20 of the nj list made the final list (“Hot Buttered Soul” and “New York Tendaberry” stayed outside the gates).
This time the classification of Pharoah Sanders and the high placements of Nick Drake and The Velvet Underground were the most surprising placements.
And The Beatles smashed every other contender with a total of 19/24 voters and 684 points (more than the double of the Stones points, 402). The list:

1. The Beatles - Abbey Road
2. The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
3. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
4. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
5. Led Zeppelin - II
6. Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
7. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
8. Sly & the Family Stone - Stand!
9. King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
10. The Who - Tommy
11. Pharoah Sanders - Karma
12. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica
13. Scott Walker - Scott 4
14. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis
15. The Band - The Band

Many thanks everyone for participating.
Soon the songs.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

It's great that Pharoah and Captain Beefheart made it to spice things up, but where are the Kinks? It seems like some people think they stopped making albums after The Village Green Preservation Society. Can't wait to see the songs list.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Sorry Honorio, I was really busy and only now managed to find time to participate in some of the games. Liege and Lief would've been my #3, I hope that wouldn't have made the difference between inclusion and exclusion; otherwise I'm pretty happy with the results. I will definitely find some time to participate in the finale.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Before posting the results about songs, these are the last comments on eligibility (as usual you got more detailed information in the eligibility thread):
- Marvin Gaye's I Heard It Through the Grapevine: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1968 and already elected for the final round), Midaso’s list move one place up from #5.
- The Youngbloods' Get Together: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1967), Midaso’s list move one place up from #8.
- Tyrone Davis' Can I Change My Mind: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1968), Henrik’s list move one place up from #4.
- Curt Boettcher's Misty Mirage: not eligible for 1969 (released in 2000), Georgie’s list move one place up from #1.
- Stark Reality’s Too Much Tenderness: not eligible for 1969 (released in 2003), Georgie’s list move one place up from #3.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1969

Honorio

- Tyrone Davis' Can I Change My Mind: not eligible for 1969 (released in 1968), Henrik’s list move one place up from #4.
In that case, Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" becomes my new #20.

...and "Can I Change My Mind" becomes my #1 of 1968!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1969

And finally the last results of the monthly poll before the final rounds (yes Nicolas, it’s coming, sorry for the delay). Now the best songs of 1969. We had a decline this time, with “only” 19 voters that however voted for a total of 186 (almost the same that last month with three voters more). This fact produced a widely spread distribution of songs, with 6 personal number ones that only received one vote and a Top 10 with less consensus than previous editions, except the number one that was voted by 15 voters with a total of 416 points. Some of the songs in the Top 10 were voted by 3 or 4 people only, including Pharoah Sanders that was able to get to the final round with both the “Karma” album and the song, which it’s almost the same (“The Creator Has a Masterplan” last for 32’14” and it’s one of the two songs of the album).
The final Top 10:

1. The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
2. David Bowie - Space Oddity
3. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
4. Led Zeppelin - Babe I’m Gonna Leave You
5. Nick Drake - River Man
6. The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
7. The Beatles - Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End
8. The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
9. Pharoah Sanders - The Creator Has a Masterplan
10. Jane Birkin avec Serge Gainsbourg - Je t’aime... moi non plus

Yes, the song Nicolas chose as opener of his new blog about French music entered (deservedly) the final round.
And now like I did on previous editions I’m going to post the Top 30:

11. MC5 - Kick Out the Jams
12. The Who - We’re Not Gonna Take It
13. The Velvet Underground - Candy Says
14. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
15. The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun
16. Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds
17. The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
18. Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Cinnamon Girl
19. Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regalia
20. The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
21. David Axelrod - The Human Abstract
22. The Beatles - Something
23. The Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want
24. King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man (Including Mirrors)
25. Love - August
26. Cream - Badge
27. Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer
28. Scott Walker - The Seventh Seal
29. The Who - Pinball Wizard
30. Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Cowgirl in the Sand

All these songs (and every other voted by you in your Top 20s) can be heard in the “Results Live” threads, you can check the Top 100 (10/07/10), Top 125 (10/15/10) Top 150 (10/28/10) and Top 175 (11/01/10).

And the Excel file.

And that’s all, folks. Many thanks again for your votes and the final round begins... now. Well, tomorrow, give me a day please.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1969

Firstly, let me say sorry for not voting, and there's a (slightly) legitimate reason for this. 1969 is just too damn good. I look at people's lists and I know the "classics" (Beatles/Stones/King Crimson etc), but most of the songs I've never heard of! I have no idea where to start! It would've been wrong for my ignorant tastes to bump up certified, tried-and-tested albums and songs, when there were so many underground classics - 1969 truly was a year for the small guns. Now I've "only" got 15 albums and 10 songs to listen to, which I will get onto as soon as possible, so that I can take part in the final vote.

Also, bit disappointed that King Crimson couldn't get into the top 10 with something, but I guess that just proves how good 1969 was.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1969

I know that we'll still have the end rounds, but now that the final year poll is over I'd already like to give my regards to our host. You've done a fabul-tastic job Honorio! Thanks for all the time and dedication you put in it (the eligibility thread and stuff).
Also a pat on the back for Nicolas, Miguel, Sonofsamiam, Charlie Driggs, Henrik and Brad, the ones who did participate in all the polls, from 1950-52 till 1969. The 50s & 60s were quite an adventure, weren't they?!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1969

Many many thanks for your kind words, Mindrocker. And yes, I’m really grateful to this selected group of people that voted from 1950 to 1969 that I will call from now on The Magnificent Seven. In fact I already wrote a few lines about you some months ago but I was waiting to post it next month with the final results of the 1950s poll (and I will do it then). Thank to you (and the other people who voted) this 50s poll has been a wonderful journey.
Seven thumbs up for Brad, Charlie Driggs, Henrik, Miguel, Mindrocker, nicolas and sonofsamiam

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1969

i think you forgot the eighth Magnificent : yourself

Thanks for all, but I'm sure there is a lot more to come...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1969

nicolas
To be honest, my Who favorite song of 1969 is "Go to the Mirror", but I picked "We're not gonna..." because it's almost the same song and it would give it a chance to appear in the final top 20.
Anyways, the best version of that song IMO is this one

See me, feel me, touch me, heal me. Townshend l’épaule de sa guitare acérée, pour le refrain il chante une deuxième voix hyper aiguë, les muscles du cou tendus par l’énergie, le corps balançant d’avant en arrière, et à la fin ses fameux moulinets du bras droit. John Entwistle impassible joue de la basse comme on déplie un tapis rouge et Keith Moon, appliqué, enchaîne roulement sur roulement de batterie. Les Who ont débarqué, ils jouent We’re not gonna take it.

“In the first third of the movie, there is a kind of black hole, a cosmic thang, a bizarre meteorite that falls into the movie, into the stage of Woodstock and into the living-room of Olive. During ten minutes, the time of two songs, this is not a matter of peace and love anymore. First we can listen something like the hammering of an electric anvil, the fixed image, then jerky, shows Pete Townshend leaping, dressed as pump attendant, the noise is his guitar, he’s in white against the blue night. Roger Daltrey, the singer, don’t addresses to the audience, he don’t look like someone who thinks too much, no, he sings, his arms open, his blond and curly hair hanging over his white dress of long fringes, he looks like an archangel, said Boris. See me, feel me, touch me, heal me. Townshend, shouldered by his sharp guitar, sings for the chorus some backing vocals hyper acute, the muscles of his neck tightened by the energy, his body swaying backwards and forwards and finally his signature windmill move of his right arm. John Entwistle plays the bass impassive as if he was unfolding a red carpet and Keith Moon, hardworking, chains drum roll after drum roll. The Who has landed, they play We’re not gonna take it.
The stage is like a ship taken by the storm at night, they follow with a reprise of Summertime Blues, in a moment they stand up, they overtake it, everything’s energy, they’re on the razor wire.
After the last fragment, Townshend adds some last isolated riffs then suddenly he stands up straight, move forward to the audience, untie the strap and brandish his guitar with his arms up, just like the offering of a sacrifice. There are some furious bounds, because Keith Moon continues ploughing his trunks, he returns, grabs his guitar by its body, the neck pointing to the sky, he takes impulse and throws violently the instrument to the floor. The amps send feedback, he hits the guitar again once or twice, he let it fall and goes away, imitated by the others, but no, he turns back, he picks up carelessly his Gibson, he throws it to the crowd and leaves again, he looks on edge, Florence comments.
The feed-back continues after they leave, the stage is empty and a deep voice says: Ladies and gentlemen, THE WHO!”

Hope my translation makes some justice to your passionate words, Nicolas

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1969

I forgot to thank you for this great quote and translation, so thank you very much Honorio !!

The translation was OK, with 2 little mistakes :

"à un moment ils se plantent, se rattrapent, tout n’est qu’énergie, sur le fil de rasoir."

"se planter" is French slang for "to fuck up", "to blow it", "to screw up", etc..

The right translation should be

"At a special moment they fuck up, then they catch up, everything’s pure energy, they’re on the razor wire."

(During the guitar break, if you listen carefully, you'll notice that Entwistle does the key change a little too soon (or Townsend plays one bar too many in the original key), then Entwistle catches up.)

the other slight mistake is "Il a quelques bonds furieux", which means "he (Townsend) makes a few furious bonds" rather than "there are some furious bonds"

But apart from that, great translation

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1969

Hey, Nicolas, glad that you liked the translation (it was quite difficult for a non-French). But the good thing is your text, you described the scene so eloquently. The whole book is great, I didn't understand every word (obviously I don't get many French slang words) but I truly got the feelings you wanted to transmit. When I was a teenager I shared the same two obsessions with Olive: music and women. And I still do.
