Back on April 8th we started with 1,024 artists. 5 months later we are down to 2.... Nickelback & Winger!!!! Just kidding, here is your Championship matchup...
JIMI ~~ For 2 reasons, the first one I have to admit, it just seems to damn obvious that The Beatles should win and though I like alot of what they did, I'm not in love with The Beatles. Secondly, Jimi was a sleeper to get this far. If you would have asked me prior to the tourney what Jimi would have done, I would of said "Round of 64, I don't see him getting much father than that." If you really look at his career, he did more in 2 years ('67 & '68) than most successful artists do in their entire career, and for that I say bring on the surprise Ultimate Music Tournament Champion; Jimi Hendrix. Now if the voting only goes his way...
Winger's debut is kind of like their White album. Timeless classics like "Seventeen", Madalaine", "Hungry" and their epic remake of "Purple Haze" make it one of the greatest albums of all-time. What really puts it over the top was their hauntingly beautiful closing song "Headed For A Heartbreak". Why this isn't in the top 10 in AM I'll never know!!!!
By the way, anyone who believes this, I have a kick-ass outdoor hockey rink in the Bahamas I'm selling for really cheap!
Yes, it is probably the biggest cliche in all of music to call The Beatles the greatest artist ever. Time and time again they've won countless polls, their albums are called the greatest albums ever, they have mountains of songs each with tons of acclaim behind them. They're easily the biggest selling, most influential, and most critically acclaimed artist in popular music. So while The Beatles really don't need to win yet another poll, and as much as I love Hendrix, I can't vote against them due to some innate feelings of integrity I have towards this poll. If anyone wants to vote against them based solely on the fact that they're tired of seeing The Beatles win, I won't hold it against them. But as dumb as it is, I cannot force myself to compromise the integrity of the poll. The Beatles are my favorite artist of all time, and so that's why I'm voting for them.
You should have said the Jonas Brothers vs. Justin Bieberif you wanted to make it really funny.
Like I said yesterday, the Beatles will probably win (as usual), but that won't stop me from voting for Jimi Hendrix. (Maybe enough of us will not want the beatles to win...)
If Jimi wins, I would be surprised, and would be wondering if the win was a result of a consensus or instead because of ennui resulting from the Beatles consistent placement at the top.
Really, there shouldn’t be any question about this. Yes, they always win…but there’s a reason for that. I was OK with the Beatles winning AM Survivor, just as I was OK with “Like a Rolling Stone” winning Bracketology. For me, these polls/tournaments/whatever are more about the journey than the destination.
Jimi Hendrix is a GREAT artist. But, based on the comments so far, it looks like if he wins, it’s because he’s Not The Beatles. That would be kind of pathetic.
I would have voted quite a few artists over The Beatles, but Hendrix is definitely not one of them. I haven't had the desire to listen to a Hendrix album in a long time.
I think my vote for Jimi is partly inspired by a new love for some of his songs and the fact that I enjoy pretty much every Beatles album slightly less every time listen to it. Yes, The Beatles are still above Jimi in my all time top 100, but I feel like listening to a Jimi Hendrix record more than any Beatles album right now—even Revolver.
If anyone doubts my Hendrix credentials, I had two Hendrix albums in my T3 in the last album poll, and Hendrix is the artistthat got me into acclaimed music in the first place. Him and Radiohead are the only artists I would vote for other The Beatles.
I am really, really hoping this doesn't end in a tie. The only thing I could do is extend the deadline and hope someone else votes without telling anyone there is a tie.
Guitar: Jimi much better than George
Bass: Noel and Paul are different, but I can't decide between the two very good bassists.
Drums: Mitch is much better than Ringo
Vocals: Neither artist is a world beater. But both are under-appreciated for their vocals. Jimi doesn't have the harmonies; the Beatles don't have the cool. It's a wash.
Live Experience: We never really knew what the Beatles were capable of live, but they certainly never provided us with what Jimi did.
That just leaves Songwriting, Arrangements, Production, collected singles, collected albums. Oh yeah... that's why the Beatles are my #1 artist.
VH1 is running their Greatest Artists Of All-Time countdown this week and their #6 artist Jimi Hendrix lost out in the 2010 Slicknation Ultimate Music Tournament to their #1 and our Champion The Beatles 53% to 47%...
Thank You to all who participated. It's been fun. 2011's Tournament will kick off in February and I will be looking for the voters to submit thier top 100 artists lists to help with next years participants and seeding.
