Re: Plus/minus poll

Most people are doing this, but I just want to be sure everyone is on board:

From here on out, only add one point to one artist, and take one point from two artists... right?

The numbers I provided above do not include Guy's vote anymore.

Unless Henrik or someone else objects, perhaps Guy can just vote again, with the Pixies zeroed out.

Re: Plus/minus poll

I'm fine with that. I didn't vote for Pixies anyway, they've had a good run.

Talking Heads 3 (-1)
Bruce Springsteen 3

It appears that many of the participants in this poll thoroughly enjoy VU.

I wonder if any of the VU songs have been played by any of these participants so often that they rate as their most listened to songs. I know we did a poll on this in the past few months. Does anyone remember a VU song leading the play list for any of this poll's participants?

I also wonder if the participants who so clearly favor VU also have a great appreciation for screeching violas and the talking/singing vocals of Lou Reed.

Do they believe that Lou Reed is a better vocalist than Dylan?

Is our consensus that VU is the best artist that could have been included in this poll?

Or were there some other motivations for placing VU at the top, the Beatles at the bottom of the poll, and many other great acts in between?

Henry

Screeching violas usually not, but I love Reed's single stuff as well. I have The Velvet Underground as my #9 artist and Lou Reed as #21.

Henry
Do they believe that Lou Reed is a better vocalist than Dylan?
No, but then again I think Dylan is the greatest artist of all time.

Henry
Is our consensus that VU is the best artist that could have been included in this poll?
I think they were the #4 of the competitors for me, behind Dylan, Springsteen and Young.

Henry
Or were there some other motivations for placing VU at the top, the Beatles at the bottom of the poll, and many other great acts in between?
They're brilliant and innovative, whereas I find the Beatles enjoyable but simplistic. That said, I think someone just voted out the Beatles because they always win; I wouldn't take this top 30 too seriously. I gather by your last few posts that you don't like VU very much, but I'll assure you that I thoroughly enjoy listening to them and haven't just been voting for them because they were influential. They just have so many spectacular songs; the debut is filled with them but all of the later albums (including VU) have some brilliant songs on them.

Thanks for your excellent response Stephan.

In my view, VU provided some great direction for others to follow and some fairly enjoyable music. But, I doubt that I will ever place VU in my top 20 of all time. But, this is probably more likely than Moonbeam suddenly changing his mind about GNR, the Beatles or Pink Floyd.

My understanding is that after Lou Reed left VU the remaining members (primarily Doug Yule) put together an album (Squeeze) that was released in February of 1973. My understanding is that Squeeze wasn't even close to the same standard of innovation and quality that characterized the VU material with Lou.

I also wonder if any of the VU fans also enjoy any of Cale's post VU material or Nico's material outside of VU.

Re: Plus/minus poll

I will readily hold my hand up and state that my voting the Beatles off was purily to allow someone else a chance to win. It was my no means a reflection of what I think of the Beatles. I'm really not putting a whole lot of thought into my votes. I don't think Henrik conceived the game to be anything more than a bit of fun.

That said, I am a fan of the The Velvet Underground. I love all 4 of their original studio albums and have been listening to The VU and Nico quite a bit lately, hence the plus vote for them. If this vote was in a weeks time then maybe my vote might be quite different.

Beans - I realize that at times I may appear to be taking this poll too seriously. I want to assure you that I have enjoyed the poll and the results as much as any VU fan.

As I think I've mentioned before, my world view is highly oriented by a 20th century epsitemological philosopher named Bernard Lonergan. This influence results in my attempting to learn something useful from any interaction or observation. Said attempts can be easily (and often times accurately) read as being too serious.

Thanks for your patience with me.

Re: Plus/minus poll

I'm certainly not taking this poll very seriously either (Mi Ami?)- perhaps I misunderstood the intent.

However, I do love the VU (and screeching beauty)- and I will proudly admit to listening to Reed's Metal Machine Music in its entirety quite frequently... for enjoyment.

Brad - Lonergan is not an easy read. I often find myself reading his passages over again multiple times and then still not quite comprehending the entire meaning intended. His most "acclaimed" work is "Insight - A Study of Human Understanding."

There are some materials that I can inform you about later that can be used as interpretive guides - and are much more accessible to those who want to understand the gist of Lonergan more quickly.

The analogy that I provide to help the uninitiated understand the difficulty of reading Lonergan is that Insight is perhaps more difficult to understand than James Joyce's "Ulysses."

Re: Plus/minus poll

Henry

I think that perhaps you're trying to look at this too objectively. I don't think anyone can claim that Dylan or Reed are technically good singers - if they went on the X Factor/American Idol, they'd be knocked out in the first round. Of course what they do have is raw emotion and great delivery. When you listen to Reed, you really feel (at least I do) like you're in the seedy underbelly of New York, the sex, the drugs, and the rock and roll. And Dylan, to me at least, tells the stories of the ordinary American. The stories aren't always enjoyable or simplistic, so I see no reason why the voice telling them should be. I think it gives the songs more integrity than if someone like Paul Mccartney (a technically more gifted singer) sang them.

And of course they have a great band behind them . To me, the screeching violas capture that mania which VU were trying to portray in their songs. Imagine being in the recording studio during Venus in Furs!

Nice.

Henry will be happy now.

Re: Plus/minus poll

Hurt/heals are supposed to be arbitrary to some extent. That's part of the fun. You punish whomever strikes your whim at the time.

I'm surprised a high profile artist like Bob Dylan survived the beginning. I would have expected him to be attacked immediately.

I placed an entry in the non-music portion of the forum. The information is unfortunately a bit long-winded and fragmented. You likely will be better served by looking at the http://www.lonergan.on.ca/reprints/grace-method.htm website for starters, rather than paying too much attention to the post I provided. Please let me know if you have any specific questions that I can attempt to address.
