Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

Rolling Stone is going to release a list of the 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs. Here's a preview I was emailed:
1. A Day in the Life
2. I Want to Hold Your Hand
3. Strawberry Fields Forever
4. Yesterday
5. In My Life
6. Something
7. Hey Jude
8. Let it Be
9. Come Togehter
10. While My Guitar Gently Weeps

And Here's how to first 10 Beatle's Songs were ranked on their 500 greatest song's list:
1. Hey Jude
2. Yesterday
3. I Want to Hold Your Hand
4. Let it Be
5. In My Life
6. A Day in the Life
7. Help!
8. She Loves You
9. Strawberry Fields Forever
10. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

The new lsit is much better, aside from the fact that "Something" is ahead of "Come Together".

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

Pretty good, aside from the fact that I Want To Hold Your Hand shouldn't even be in the top 30...

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

Out of that top ten, the only songs that would make my Beatles top ten are A Day in the Life, Strawberry Fields Forever, and In My Life. That being said, it's not like they were going to leave out Yesterday in favor of And Your Bird Can Sing, so I wasn't expecting anything different.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

I agree, this list is much much better. A Day and SFF are now pretty much universally agreed upon as The Beatles most acclaimed works. I Want to Hold Your Hand was going to be there no matter what as it's the song that broke them, so that doesn't bother me. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a great inclusion.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

I just picked up the issue. Here's the list, "ranked by the editors of Rolling Stone," according to the back cover. There are no covers included - the list is comprised of Beatles originals only.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

I don't really have any complaints about the top 100 other than what the hell is "Across the Universe" doing at 84? That song is easily a top class Beatles song in my opinion, and is miles ahead of "Let it Be". Also, I'm strongly against counting the Abbey Road Medley as one song. Other than that, a great list.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

Here are some stats RS gave about the list:

17 John and Paul songs
35 Paul songs
40 John songs
8 George songs

By Year
1963 5
1964 16
1965 17
1966 17
1967 12
1968 16
1969 12
1970 5

By Album
Please Please Me 3
With the Beatles 3
A Hard Day's Night 8
Beatles for Sale 5
Help! 7
Rubber Soul 8
Revolver 11
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 6
Magical Mystery Tour 6
The Beatles 13
Yellow Submarine 1
Abbey Road 7
Let it Be 7
Not On Any Album 15

I'm glad to see Revolution get some respect, but what's Lucy in the Sky doing in the top 20?

And Rain at 88?

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

Hey where's Revolution 9?

Tomorrow Never Knows at 18? She Said She Said at 37? For No One at 40? Maybe I'm a bit biased towards Revolver, but those three are criminally low. No matter what criteria you use, to me Tomorrow Never Knows beats Hey Jude and Let It Be in every way.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

The Rain positioning is a joke, considering it was in the original 500 Greatest Songs. I know different people have compiled the lists but it's the same publication. In six years it's gone from among the 500 best songs by any artist to only the 88th best Beatles song? Consistency?

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

I got the magazine for my birthday, and it is an excellent read! I have been waiting for Rolling Stone to put out this type of list!

Some songs that placed too high (IMO):

I Want to Hold Your Hand (#2)
Please Please Me (#20)
You're Going to Lose That Girl (#27)
The Ballad of John and Yoko (#48)

Some songs that placed too low (IMO):

Here Comes the Sun (#28)
I Am the Walrus (#33)
Helter Skelter (#52)
And Your Bird Can Sing (#78)
Across the Universe (#84)
Rain (#88)
Hello, Goodbye (#100)

I am surprised at how few songs from Sgt. Pepper were included, especially compared to some other albums (A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Let It Be), and that "Within You Without You" made the cut over "Getting Better," "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!," or "Lovely Rita."

Some songs that are missing: "I Will," "It's All Too Much," "This Boy," "Magical Mystery Tour," "The Fool on the Hill," "Martha My Dear," "Do You Want to Know a Secret," "Michelle," "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," "Rocky Raccoon," "Blue Jay Way," "Octopus's Garden," "The Inner Light," "Free as a Bird," "Real Love" (the first three I mentioned being the ones I think were criminally excluded), but hey, for the most part, they got the right 100. And it's nice to see some recognition for songs like "Every Little Thing," "All I've Got to Do," "Good Day Sunshine," and a few other overlooked numbers.

It is nice that, since they excluded cover songs from the list, that they had a section of "The Beatles' Best Cover Songs" ("Twist and Shout," "Long Tall Sally," "Words of Love," "Please Mr. Postman," "Money (That's What I Want)," "Act Naturally"), however, I think that "Twist and Shout" deserves its own place in the Top 100.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

P.S. I think if they would have switched "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Hey Jude"'s rankings, this list would have made a lot more sense, especially since "Hey Jude" was voted the 8th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone (the Beatles' highest-ranking song on that list)

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

I wished they put Octopus's Garden in their list, really is a charming song (top 30 Beatles song for me I think) and there would have been at least one Starr song.
But the most surprising omission is Fool on the Hill still.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

Lots of really underrated songs:

Tomorrow Never Knows (18)
Eleanor Rigby (22)
I Am the Walrus (33)
For No One (40)
I'm Only Sleeping (57)
Nowhere Man (66)
And Your Bird Can Sing (78)
Across the Universe (84)
Back in the U.S.S.R. (85)

This task is really, really difficult after the first few. That being said, a lot of the Beatles' more creative and interesting songs are rated below their earlier, more popular work. I'm not sure what the criteria were for this list, but I don't even think there's an argument that "Can't Buy Me Love" is superior to "I Am the Walrus."

I was curious to see which Beatles songs would have the biggest jumps and drops on Acclaimed Music when it is updated with Rolling Stone's list.

ANALYSIS / TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION

Could "A Day in the Life" (#20) surpass "Strawberry Fields Forever" (#17) as the Beatles' highest-ranked song on Acclaimed Music?

Could "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (#388) surpass "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" (#337) as the (rightful) highest-ranked song from the White Album?

Could "I Saw Her Standing There" crack the Top 1000?

Which other songs could break the top 1000?

Which songs could start bubbling under?

Which songs will enter the top 3000?

Which songs will drop out of the top 3000?

Which songs do you think will get the biggest bumps/drops?

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

Well, I think it would be fair if A Day surpassed Strawberry and Weeps passed Happiness, cause (and as much as a Strawberry Fields fan I am [all time #6; and #1 of The Beatles] ) it is almost a consensus that A Day in the Life is the best Beatles' song, with SFF being the second. I have never like ADTL that much, but I recognize it is considered the best, and so has been unfairly been ranked at 2nd. The exactly same thing goes for both the White Album tracks, with the difference that I really consider the George's song better than John's.

The list has some fails, but I've agreed much more with this than with the other best-Beatles lists. It's interesting that their great ballads/standards are listed from 4-8th in a queue, I only think Something shouldn't belong there.
And it would have been almost perfect if they had exchanged I Want to Hold Your Hand with She Loves You!

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

For me, Beatles songs are kind of interchangeable. I love them all and you all know that. But, if there was one that I loved more than any other it would be Rain. If that were released on a proper album I think it might be universally considered the greatest song of all time. It's still a Beatles song so it's not like it's underground or anything, but I feel it's underrated.

Ummm - no.
Geez, with the amount you ass-lick the Beatles,I swear your last name must be Lennon, come back to life...

Joe, I don't think "Rain" is the greatest song of all time either, but with all due respect to freedom of speech, there's absolutely no call for that. We may disagree here, but we do respect each other's opinions even when they're blatantly wrong.

Re: I Was In Borders...

If only Strawbeery Fileds Forever and Penny Lane had been included on Sgt.Pepper, then it would not only have the Beatles' 2 greatest songs, but it would probably be the greatest album of all time.

There's probably a lot of truth to that, especially since Sgt. Pepper is already considered to be one of the greatest of all time, and by some, the greatest. The addition of "Strawberry Fields" and "Penny Lane" would no doubt have reinforced that belief.

At a curiosity, where would you place "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" on the track list if you included them on the Sgt. Pepper album? I find this quite a challenge! :P

It's interesting to imagine how amazing some of the Beatles' already amazing albums would have been if they included the singles (or EPs) recorded during the albums' recording sessions:

With the Beatles + "I Want to Hold Your Hand"/"This Boy"
A Hard Day's Night + "Long Tall Sally," "I Call Your Name," "Slow Down," "Matchbox"
Beatles for Sale + "I Feel Fine"/"She's a Woman"
Help! + "Yes It Is," "I'm Down"
Rubber Soul + "We Can Work It Out"/"Day Tripper"
Revolver + "Paperback Writer"/"Rain"
Sgt. Pepper + "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane"
The Beatles + "Hey Jude"/"Revolution"
Abbey Road + "The Ballad of John and Yoko"/"Old Brown Shoe"
Let It Be + "Don't Let Me Down," "You Know My Name"

I think the only albums from that list that would not have benefited from the inclusion of the singles tracks would be Abbey Road, where I actually think all of the songs on the LP were better than "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and "Old Brown Shoe," and A Hard Day's Night, where a lot of the album's greatness is due to its exclusion of cover songs, and "I Call Your Name" is kind of a weak Lennon/McCartney number.

Re: I Was In Borders...

Just at a curiosity, which musical acts would you like to see Rolling Stone magazine next publish a list of "100 Greatest Songs" for?

I think the three acts that stand out the most as candidates would be Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and Elvis Presley. Along with the Beatles, these acts filled out the top 4 positions on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists list, and are also the only four acts to have more than 10 songs in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.

I would actually prefer a list of Elvis to be published before the Stones or Dylan, simply for the reason that their careers are still not over yet. However, I think lists of the Stones and/or Dylan would make for more interesting reads, since they actually wrote their own material.

Either way, I hope Rolling Stone magazine makes a habit out of publishing special Greatest Songs issues for artists.

Some other artists I would like to see a 100 Greatest Songs list from:
The Beach Boys
Chuck Berry
David Bowie (someday)
James Brown
Johnny Cash
Ray Charles
Marvin Gaye
Michael Jackson (someday, perhaps after material recorded before his death resurfaces)
Pink Floyd
Prince (someday)
U2 (someday)
The Who

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

100 greatest Dylan songs could make for a fantastic book.

"I Want To Hold Your Hand" is the most overrated song of all time.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

Loophole

"I Want To Hold Your Hand" is the most overrated song of all time.

Or it's definitely in contention. Critics, especially in the US, seem to include it purely on the basis that it launched The Beatles worldwide, was the first British invasion song, and cemented their place in British pop royalty. They seem to forget that it was, in fact, She Loves You which did all of those things, as well as having the catapulting drum intro, thumping chorus and faint-inducing 'oohs' to take audiences on a thrill ride which defined the early Beatles.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

I would end side 1 one Sgt. Pepper with Strawberry Fields Forever, and open side 2 with Penny Lane.

And I think the Imagine is the most overrated song ever.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

I had thought of the following tracklist:

1) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
2) With a Little Help From My Friends
3) Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
4) Getting Better
5) Fixing a Hole
6) Strawberry Fields Forever (with another John song in the album they wouldn't put 3 Macca songs in a row like in the original)
7) Lovely Rita
8) Penny Lane
9) Within You Without You
10) Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!
11) She's Leaving Home
12) Good Morning Good Morning
13) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise)
14) A Day in the Life

This would fit their tradition of putting 14 songs in each album, and with the inclusion of another Paul song, When I'm Sixty Four could have been released only as a B Side of some another single.
Listyguy's idea is another plausible one, maybe the most likely to have happened.
I don't know if the album would be generally considered the best of all time, but surely it would compete in an equal level with Revolver for the status of best Beatles' album.

And, yes, I think She Loves You is the song that should receive all the praise given to I Want to Hold Your hand. Not only for its importance, but, mainly, for its incredible quality.

Re: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Beatle's Songs

I think that logic about singles making albums better could apply to the Stones too.
Imagine Beggar's Banquet with "Jumpin Jack Flash" or Let it Bleed with "Honkey Tonk Women"?
