I don’t have a gimmick for round 3, so I’ll fall back on mentioning artists I’m sorry not to be voting for:
Four Tops. SRV is, I admit, a huge homer vote. But Austin wouldn’t be Austin without him. He’d probably roll over in his grave if he knew I’d taken him over the Tops, though—an outstanding example of 60s R&B vocals.
Black Sabbath. This one was reeeal close for me, and just came down to the fact that I like more S&G songs than Sabbath songs. But those guys, really more than the demigods in Led Zep, pretty much invented what metal is.
Lionel Richie v. Whitney Houston is hard to get worked up with one way or t’other. I went with Lionel because I have a friend who’s interviewed him a couple of times and says he’s very nice. And yes, that’s probably the lamest justification I’ve admitted to on this forum.
#1 Elton John
Her s/t is a great album but other than that she's kind of bland.
#1 The Clash
#2 Four Tops
#1 Ray Charles
Death Cab is okay but kind of blends in with other indie.
#3 Simon & Garfunkel
Two opposite bands. Black Sabbath are metal pioneers but too many of their songs are just a lot of banging and yelling.
#4 Deep Purple
#3 Lionel Richie
I'm not a huge Lionel Richie fan, but at least he can sing one syllable in under five seconds.
#13 Tracy Chapman (Tracy needs at least one vote)
#3 Little Richard
#1 The Clash
#2 Four Tops
#1 Ray Charles
#3 Simon & Garfunkel
#4 Deep Purple
#3 Lionel Richie
#1 Elton John
#3 Little Richard
#1 The Clash
#2 Four Tops
#1 Ray Charles
#2 Black Sabbath "but too many of their songs are just a lot of banging and yelling"- sorry BillA, I have to disagree on that one!
#4 Deep Purple
#3 Lionel Richie
"but too many of their songs are just a lot of banging and yelling"
#1 Elton John
#3 Little Richard - at least there should be one 50s artist in the next round...
#1 The Clash
#2 Four Tops (very close call)
#1 Ray Charles
#3 Simon & Garfunkel
#1 Chicago
#3 Lionel Richie
#1 Elton John
#3 Little Richard
#1 The Clash
#2 Four Tops
#1 Ray Charles
#3 Simon & Garfunkel
#1 Chicago
#3 Lionel Richie - Actually have some respect for both of them, although I don't listen to their music
Favorite this round - Simon & Garfunkel, with Ray Charles knocking on the door.
Favorite not voted for - In a poor bracket, Death Cab for Cutie is catchy enough to take this title.
Elton John
Don Henley
The Clash
The Four Tops
Ray Charles
Simon & Garfunkel
Chicago
Lionel Richie
favorite: Simon & Garfunkel
favorite not voted for: Whitney - no love for her on AM is disappointing...while she's wrecked her legacy over the last 10 years, she has one of the most powerful voices in the history of popular music, and she's recorded some great singles
