Slicks Predictions...
Stevie -- Tough luck for Jane's...
Toss Up -- This one really could go either way, gut instinct says Sly...
Ramones -- Should win easy...
Rush -- Though The Doobies could put up a battle...
The Who -- Lots of Patsy supporters make a tough choice...
The Police -- Narrow victory...
Toss Up -- For most the toughest choice in this bracket, impossible to predict...
Clapton -- Hey Moby, make sure you turn off the lights on your way out...
#1 Stevie Wonder
#3 Sly & The Family Stone
#1 Ramones vs. #5 Grand Funk - pass
#3 The Doobie Brothers - tough call - Rush will win anyway
#1 The Who
The Police
#1 Oasis
Eric Clapton
#1 Stevie Wonder
Love JA.
#3 Sly & The Family Stone
I'm surprised Morrissey is getting through. He was great in the Smiths but his solo stuff is average. And I find some of his lyrics pretty terrible. It's all about random misanthropy and fashionable cynicism, and can be preachy in it's depressiveness.
#1 Ramones
#2 Rush
#1 The Who
#6 Pulp
Pulp have a couple great songs but a pretty shallow discography. But I can't get The Police's entire approach to songwriting.
#1 Oasis
Great singles band, weak album band.
#2 Eric Clapton
Clapton's very talented but doesn't have very good solo stuff. But Moby, other than some stuff Play, I just don't like. And even Play gets old quickly.
Janes Addiction - probably wont win but they deserve some recognition
Sly & The Family Stone
Ramones
Rush
The Who
Pulp
Parliament/Funkadelic - wildly creative, I'm in the "Oasis is bland" camp... but they've got some hilarious quotes
Moby
#1 Stevie Wonder
#3 Sly & The Family Stone
#1 Ramones
#3 The Doobie Brothers
#1 The Who
#2 The Police
#4 Parliament/Funkadelic
#6 Moby
I think the PFunk vs Oasis thing is a real battle of polar opposites. On one hand you have a band that's relatively unorginal, is a little weak on albums, but has some really great singles. On the other you have a band that has multiple great albums (a few could be considered masterpieces), and are true originals, effortlessly blend genres, but are a little weak in the pop singles department. Guess it depends on what you like.
Stevie Wonder
Sly & the Family Stone
Ramones
Rush
The Who
Pulp
Parliament/Funkadelic (should be one of the closest/most interesting matchups of the week)
Moby (anyone over Clapton's solo career)
Much better bracket today, with a handful of absolute legends. I'm off on vacation starting tomorrow for a while, so I may not be able to vote as the third round progresses.
Stevie Wonder
Sly & The Family Stone
Ramones
The Doobie Brothers - Both are fun bands, with a quality that overcomes their sometimes "object of scorn" reputations. I'm going with the pop chart monsters above the prog-rock masters, but have some degree of love for both. But remember what fellow bracket member George Clinton said: "but can you imagine Doobie-in' your funk? Ho! W E F U N K, We-Funk"
The Who
The Police - A very close matchup between top quality second-tier bands. I'm gonna go with the tighter Police, with plenty of love for Pulp.
Parliament/Funkadelic - To me this is no contest, but I recognize the love out there for Oasis, and I look forward to the results.
Moby - I know that his work can often fall into the dull category, and that Play can wear badly after a few too many listens. But Play and some other of his singles is better than anything that solo Clapton has produced, with the possible exception of Layla.
Favorite this round - Asking one to choose between Stevie and Sly is torture... and that is exactly what I'll have to decide next round. It will take me that long to come up with an answer.
Favorite not voted for - With respect to Rush and Patsy Cline, I'm going with Pulp.
