Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

Welcome to the Section 7 of the 50s & 60s acclaimed music forum poll. This month we will deal with 1966, one of the best years in music ever. If last month/year included the two best songs ever according to Acclaimed Music ("Like a Rolling Stone" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction") this month/year include the best album ever and the number two too!! Moreover a third album from that year is on the Top 10 of best albums ever also!! So there’s going to be strong competition this month, I mean we all know the Top 3 but I’m not sure about the final ranking (my #1 is going to be "Blonde on Blonde" for instance). But I'm sure you deal with that with your usual solid criteria, I’m really looking forward for another excellent set of lists from you.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums with your personal choices, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of July. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

You may find useful to have a look at the albums and songs lists of:
- Acclaimed Music: albums and songs.
- Rate Your Music: albums, songs and, since some of the album considered compilations in Rate Your Music are eligible on this poll, the compilations.

Have a nice poll…

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

Is King of the Delta Blues eligable for this?

My general thought is that anything that came out before the album era composed of singles all recorded around the same time should be considered for AM. That would include Elvis At Sun and King of the Delta Blues.

If Delta Blues doesn't qualify just shift everything under it up one.

1. Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde 96.97
2. Beatles - Revolver 87.93
3. Robert Johnson - King Of The Delta Blues 73.41
4. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds 61.09
5. Simon & Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme 33.05
6. Rolling Stones - Aftermath
7. The Kinks - Face To Face
8. Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence
9. The Monks - Black Monk Time
10. Ennio Morricone - The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

Stephan
It says in the allmusic description that the original release was 1961, wikipedia and RYM also say 1961.

Well, all the songs were recorded 1935-1936 anyway, so it should really be considered from then. Ok, just slide everything below it up one.

I'm discovering the first Tim Bucley album.
Please consider it, it's wonderful !!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

(This is my RYM review of Tim Buckley's first album)

Well, this just a first listen, but God, I'm impressed ! And he was only 19 !!!
I'm not very familiar with Tim Buckley, and I wanted to start with the beginning. This album is really great, even after one listening session. The vocals, the melody, the melancholy make it an instant classic to me.
I love teenage romantic records. It makes me think back of the young man I once was. As time goes by (I'm 40 now) I'm much more interseted in this type of moving, straightforward records than in so-called (so cold) "groundbreaking" or experimental efforts. 4.5 with my heart.

Starsailor is experimental for 2010. With acoustic guitar. And it's in my all time top ten.

I've heard Goodbye and Hello, Blue Afternoon, Happy Sad, and Starsailor. I love them all.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

BillAdama, you should listen to the first one, even though most Buckley fans don't like it very much because they feel it sounds too simple and less adventurous.

Buckley didn't like it either,he said it sounded "like Disney", but I really do.
I'll try to listen to the other ones these next months (well, the ones from 67, 68, 69... at least)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

Goodbye And Hello and Happy Sad(and in fact loads of other great albums) on here:

If you're not bothered about having to own a physical copy...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

I just read his allmusic profile. I didn't know he was Jeff Buckley's father. That is a bad luck genius family.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

Same face, same voice, same early death before 30.
By the time his first album went out (2 days before or after Jeff's birth, I don't remember), Tim had already left home.
The 2 of them barely met.
Jeff and his mom weren't even invited to Tim's funeral

I'm spending the last week of July at my parents' house. I had prepared a long Spotify playlist of 1966 albums to listen to with my mobile phone, but I forgot my headphones so I'm afraid that there won't be much listening. I will post an albums list later, but it will be shorter than I hoped it to be.

My favourite Spanish song of 1966: Los Salvajes' "Soy así"

First let’s get rid of the obvious comment: if Los Brincos were the Spanish Beatles, Los Salvajes (The Wild Ones) were the Spanish Stones. At least during the sixties because the crown of the Spanish Stones during the seventies must rely on Burning. In fact Los Salvajes often made Spanish covers of the current Stones hits (they released their Spanish versions shortly after the original ones), songs like "Satisfacción" ("Satisfaction"), "La neurastenia" ("19th Nervous Breakdown") or "Algo de títere" ("Jumpin' Jack Flash"), being the most brilliant "Todo negro" ("Paint It, Black") replacing the original Indian sounds by Spanish flavours.
But this imitative behaviour (quite usual at the time, and still today) was nothing to be ashamed of, in fact it was the opposite. And not only because the raw sounds of the British R&B and mod bands of the mid-sixties could be one of the best influences one can think of but mainly because looking back at the Spain of the time these wild sounds and this rebel attitude were not only desirable but even necessary. Think about a country where the young people with mop haircuts Beatles-style were insulted on the street and called "maricón" ("queer"). Los Salvajes got their (ahem) wildness playing for several months at the rude Hamburg night clubs just like, you know, The Silver Beatles. They returned to Spain as the hardest rocking band at the time, with fuzzy guitars and proudly generational lyrics that today may cause blush because of its naïveté.
The best example is Los Salvajes’ signature song: "Soy así" ("I'm Like That"). The music included fine garage and R&B sounds with quotes to previous hits of the band like "Al Capone" or "Satisfacción". And the lyrics about "scandalous" juvenile clothes people included naïve lines like "Travelling on the subway / people think I'm English" revealing, apart of a quite childish veneration for their British models, that the emancipation and self-affirmation of the youth (in all its petty aspects) was among the many pending revolutions in that Spain. And I would say that even one of the most important.

SOY ASÍ
Composer and performer: LOS SALVAJES
First release: 1966 ("La neurastenia" 7" EP)
Length: 2’34”

(Auuh)
Con patillas largas,
estrecho pantalón,
un jersey a rayas,
aunque llame la atención.

Soy así,
soy así,
soy así.

Toco la guitarra
con satisfacción,
bailo a mi manera,
aunque llame la atención.

Soy así (ah-ah),
soy así,
soy así (oh, babe).

Un traje de Al Capone,
chaleco Elliott Ness,
yo viajo en metro
y me toman por inglés.

Soy así (yeah),
soy así (¡soy así-í!),
soy así (oh, no, oh-oh),
(mmm) soy así (soy así),
soy así,
soy así…

I'M LIKE THAT

(Aoow)
With long sideburns,
tight pants,
a striped sweater,
even if I attract attention.

I'm like that,
I'm like that,
I'm like that.

I play guitar
with satisfaction,
I dance my way,
even if I attract attention.

I'm like that (ah-ah),
I'm like that,
I'm like that (oh, babe).

An Al Capone suit,
an Elliott Ness vest,
travelling on the subway,
people think I’m English.

I'm like that (yeah),
I'm like that (I'm like tha-at!),
I'm like that (oh, no, oh-oh),
(mmm) I'm like that (I'm like that).
I'm like that,
I'm like that…

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

There seems to be some French pop fans here, but no one voted for Jacques Dutronc, who made a great album and 3 excellent singles in 1966.
Is he famous outside of France ? He was the best (the only good) performer of the yéyé era, with great lyrics, a sort of Fench Ray Davies.

A great guitarist, he is Françoise Hardy's husband (and his son is also a good guitarist/singer)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1966

Hi, boys, I came yesterday from my holidays only to see that my phone (and my Internet connection) wasn’t working but fortunately it’s already working thanks to the Movistar repairmen (on a Sunday!! definitely Spain is changing). So I will begin this very evening the recounts (and to trace the eligibility of the new votes), so you can expect the first results on a couple of days. Two comments:
- Yes, Zorg, I can count only three albums, but I’m afraid I don’t understand you completely. Do you want to assign 50 points to Dylan, 40 to The Beatles and 35 to The Beach Boys, isn’t it?
- Thanks, Stephan and Nassim. Yes, the first release of the songs “Heroin” and “Venus in Furs” were as part of the album “The Velvet Underground & Nico”, released on March of 1967, while “Sunday Morning” or “All Tomorrow’s Parties” were released as singles on 1966, see the eligibility thread.
- Damn, Henrik, I forgot the wonderful last album of Violeta Parra (and her great song “Gracias a la vida”), I don’t know why I though it was from 1967.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

So here they are the first results, first the best albums of 1966. This time we enjoyed a new increase of voters too, from 19 to 22 voters on the albums poll (and 20 on the songs poll). Many thanks to all the newcomers (EMW, SR, Michael and Georgie) and to the prodigal sons (Slick and SuperFurry) and I hope that Romain, Sven and Frank will return in other editions.
The list is (as everyone expected) as good as the previous, with no surprises on the Top 3 that reproduced the order on the main Acclaimed Music list (but when I went on holidays Dylan was on #1 and The Beach Boys on #3). I’ve included the three lists sent after the deadline and this inclusion broke a tie on the songs poll but created a tie on the albums list. Well, the list:

1. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
2. The Beatles - Revolver
3. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
4. The Rolling Stones - Aftermath
5. Simon & Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
6. The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!
7. The Kinks - Face to Face
8. The 13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators
9. The Byrds - Fifth Dimension
10. Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence
11. The Monks - Black Monk Time
12. Ennio Morricone - Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo
13. Otis Redding - Complete and Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul
14. The Mama's and the Papa's - If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears
15. John Mayall - Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton

There is a tie in the last place between the John Mayall album and Nina Simone's "Wild Is the Wind" but while the Bluesbreakers received votes from 6 different posters Nina was voted for only 4 of us. So I got to let finally out Nina with pain in my heart: You touch me / I hear the sound of mandolin.
Tomorrow songs.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

I put the amazing "Wild Is the Wind" in my all-time top 100 after a wow-experience when I heard it for the first time for the moderately acclaimed poll. But after a quick listen to "Wild Is the Wind" again last week, I felt that it was a little uneven so I decided to put it behind "Revolver" and "Blonde on Blonde" (which are not in my top 100). Guess if I regret this now...

Nevertheless, thanks again Honorio!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

Did you know that that album was only made of leftovers from previous sessions ?? Unbelievable but true.
Sorry I didn't vote for it but I only heard a few songs.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1966

Grr, two days without Internet connection (and this time no one on the phone to solve it). And my friends off on holidays. I'm writing to you from a Cyber-Café to finally post the results that I compiled two days ago.

Yes, Henrik and nicolas, I agree with you, the greatness of Nina showed even in her leftovers. Anyway we have two Nina albums on the final tournament, 1958’s “Jazz as Played in an Exclusive Side Street Club” and 1965’s “Pastel Blues”. And 1961’s “Forbidden Fruit” left out by a narrow margin too. At least her results were far better that in the main AM lists.

And now the best songs of 1966:

1.The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
2.The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
3.The Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black
4.The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
5.The Velvet Underground & Nico - Sunday Morning
6.The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows
7.The Beatles - For No One
8.Jimi Hendrix Experience - Hey Joe
9.Four Tops - Reach Out I'll Be There
10.Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna

And now the comments:
The inclusion of the lists after the deadline broke a tie for the 10th position between “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “All Tomorrow’s Parties” and allowed the inclusion of a Dylan’s song, the unexpected “Visions of Johanna”. So in our poll Joan Baez won Eddie Sedgwick (“Just Like a Woman” was my choice for the Top 10 but it only reached #14 in our poll) and even Sara Lowndes (the “Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands” ended at #19). So in our poll we modified the sentimental trajectory of Bob Dylan, no less.
The Beach Boys should be the obvious winner of our poll, we put them not only at the top of the albums list but hey also topped the song list with two songs (contrary to AM main list the #1 went to “God Only Knows” while “Good Vibrations” won the second prize). But if we look to the complete list we realize that, while Dylan managed to put 9 songs and The Beach Boys 10, we included 13 songs by The Beatles, and three of them on the Top 10 (along with Lennon at his most experimental with “Tomorrow Never Knows” we voted for two excellent McCartney tunes with classical music background, “Eleanor Rigby” and “For No One”). We included in our list almost the complete “Revolver” album and both sides of a single. The only 1966 Beatles songs that didn’t receive any vote (I mean inside our Top 20’s) were “Yellow Submarine”, “Love You To” and… “Taxman”!!!
A total of 144 songs received votes for 20 voters reaching our record so far (79 in 1950, 75 in 1951, 84 in 1952, 92 in 1953, 91 in 1954, 78 in 1955, 101 in 1956, 103 in 1957, 107 in 1958. 104 in 1959, 97 in 1960, 101 in 1961, 107 in 1962, 112 in 1963, 132 in 1964, 131 in 1965). But still we haven’t doubled the votes of the 50s poll! So keep on voting, now we are in 1967 and there are so many great songs and albums to vote for!

Please go to the eligibility thread for some comments about the eligibility of some of your votes, affecting basically Georgie’s list.

When I got back my Internet connection I will post the Excel file.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

Oh, damn, I see, posting from a damn Cyber-café with the damn Open Office produced a doubled post with lots of mistakes. Probably it’s the same in other countries but in Spain the Cyber-cafés are ghettos where the immigrants can keep in touch with their families overseas in a cheaper way. Anyway at least the results I posted were the correct ones.

And that’s all, the Excel file

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

So, in the end I was the only one who voted for "For What It's Worth"

Also, River Deep-Mountain High only at 31st place was surely a surprise.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

Yes, Henrik, you’re right. The question of “River Deep - Mountain High” is simple injustice. But the question about “For What It’s Worth” (Charlie Driggs, sonofsamiam and me voted for it too but outside of our Top 20s) is the possible influence of our discussion about the release date. Probably I should include again the discussions about eligibility and release dates into the main voting thread and not in the parallel eligibility thread in order to avoid the overlooking of some songs or albums of uncertain date of release. Or maybe I should post on the main thread the conclusions and on the eligibility thread the detailed discussion. I'm not sure, what do you think of it?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

For what is worth is a 67 song in AM, I must admit I take the years indicated in the AM site as the right ones ! I would have voted for it otherwise.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

Well, I’m willing to consider again “For What It’s Worth” a 1967 song (in fact every source except Rateyourmusic and some chart information date it like that) and to give it a second chance. Probably the competition is even more intense in 1967 that it was in 1966, even against Buffalo Springfield themselves that released during 1967 a bunch of great songs like Still’s “Bluebird” or Young’s “Expecting to Fly” or especially “Broken Arrow”, that show that Young walked to opposite way, at advanced periods of his career was a paradigm of simplicity (in a good way) while in his beginnings was tempted (and succeeded in it) by the complex and multilayered world of psychedelia.
So please Listyguy, Fred, Charlie Driggs and Gillingham if you want to include “For What It’s Worth” in your Top 20s for 1967 songs please let me know. And the one who are planning to vote for the 1967 poll please consider it.

Ah, that´s good news! For What It´s Worth is a huge favorite of mine, but considering it was a ´67 release I didn´t put it on my 1966 list.
In fact, I still think it´s a 1967 release. Even if I remember reading a few weeks ago a pretty convincing post Henrik once received about For What It´s Worth, where it was included in several late ´66 charts by a couple of radio stations. But what I recall from my own radio days, is that radio stations always get a lot of promo stuff and pre-releases (same counts for the music mags). And when it´s interesting, of course they put it on their playlist. But that doesn´t necessarily mean that the record is available in the shops yet. I seriously doubt that, apart from the pro´s, someone was able to purchase For What It´s Worth before january 1967.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1966

"For What It's Worth" is January 1967. It is about the winter riots on the Sunset Strip.
