As a Beatles fan it boggles me how "Tomorrow Never Knows" isn't on the list and while I love "Can't Buy Me Love" is on this list.

Radiohead still only has 2 songs on the list? (No "Creep," no "High and Dry," no "Just," no "Karma Police," nothing from "Kid A," "Amnesiac," "Hail to the Thief," or "In Rainbows"). Shame.

How did "Moment of Surrender" make it so high (and at all, for that matter)? - it was #36 on their end-of-decade list, far behind their own "Beautiful Day" (#9). Is "Moment of Surrender" really their 4th best song they ever put out? Better than "Sunday Bloody Sunday"? "Pride (In the Name of Love)"? "New Year's Day"? The aforementioned "Beautiful Day"? And we still don't have "Where the Streets Have No Name," "I Will Follow," "Bad," "The Unforgettable Fire," "Desire," "Angel of Harlem," "All I Want Is You," "Mysterious Ways," "Stuck in a Moment," or even "Vertigo"?

On that note of classic artists, is Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising" really one of the greatest songs of all time? What about "Hungry Heart," "Rosalita," "I'm on Fire," "Dancing in the Dark," "Glory Days," "Streets of Philadelphia," "The River," etc. etc.

No Arcade Fire?

No "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)"?

No LCD Soundsystem?

No Gorillaz?

Looks like they also got rid of Eminem's "Lose Yourself" (a shame, in my opinion...also doesn't make sense...made #12 on their decade list), leaving him with now one song ("Stan")

No "Hurt" by Johnny Cash? (#15 on their end-of-decade list)

Also sad to see "More Than a Feeling" get the boot (as well as "Lola," "Rhiannon," "Desperado," "On the Road Again," "It's Too Late," "One Fine Day," "Kicks," "The Boys Are Back in Town," "Band of Gold")

Also, I will never understand how in the world "Since U Been Gone" has become as critically-acclaimed as it is. And this is not Rolling Stone magazine's fault.

I totally agree with your comments Daniel but then this list is quite representative of the magazines' taste! I mean they always leaned towards classic rock to sum up things, didn't they? I think they should have extend the whole thing to a top 1000 greatest songs of all time and everybody would have been happy!

The original list was chosen based on votes by 172 musicians, critics, and music-industry figures. Does anyone know how the update was made?

I garuntee this list was made by RS editors squeezing in 2000's songs wherever they could. And some of these songs were out when the first list was made and didn't make it, so why would RS add them now?

Nevermind Radiohead just having two songs- Madonna still has just one! Granted, it's probably her greatest track, but, still. Then again, as usual, female acts don't fare nearly as well as the guys.

I can't believe Free Man In Paris got knocked off for some of those newer pop and rap songs. (Instead of some of the newer songs that actually deserved it)

Rolling Stone's lists have a history of being economically influenced, of course.

I don't know if anyone else caught this,in part because it was not great loss - but, Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price also appears to have dropped off the list from its former spot at 456.

Okay so T Rex in my eyes would be nailed on for a Rolling Stones list. They have a handful of real 70s anthems, pioneered glam rock etc. I suppose Guthrie's influence stretches beyond his output so that's fair. As for Devo I would've assumed at least Whip It or Mongoloid could've cracked the lower echelons, but on second thought maybe not as RS slated them for their Satisfaction cover back in the day

Gimme Shelter should be higher, in my opinion. It's at 38 now. "I Want to Hold Your Hand," should be much lower, I think. It has historical interest, but who rocks out to that song, especially in view of the much better and richer Beatles songs that came after? Help!, for example, has aged much better than I Wanna Hold Your Hand. What are we, 12 years old? We shtoink on the 4th date. Also Gimme Shelter is one of Obama's favorite Stones song, and the Stones are one of his top 3 bands. "Gimme Shelter is so powerful it's like a nonstop weather system that should be tracked by the International Hurricane Agency"
My Generation is also overrated. It has the famous line "I hope I die before I get old," of course, but who really gets into the off-rhythm stuttering. I think My Generation seems like a gawky imbecile child compared to Wont Get Fooled Again.

Voodoo Child is the most exciting guitar song I've ever heard, it has a primal energy that makes even the best of Clapton sound tame. It's not in the top 100. It should be in the top 20. It's like a volcano of inspiration in a tea room full of murmuring mediocrities. It makes ACDC and Tom Petty and David Bowie's rock experiments sound wafer-thin and square by comparison. I like Layla, but the famous riff of Layla sounds hurried and unfunky to me compared to the riffs cascading through Voodoo Child.
