Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1962, 1963 and 1964

Welcome to the Part 5 of the 50s & 60s acclaimed music forum poll. This month it’s the turn of the years 1962, 1963 and 1964, another exciting period for music (well, last month I described the 1959-1961 as a “relatively weak period” but your list proved me wrong, in fact it could be considered as the peak of jazz music). But during 1962-1964 two simultaneous music revolutions were about to happen, changes that are still determining the music of today. First, the rock bands were since then the main expression of young musicians (ignited massively by The Beatles). And secondly the folk singers evolved from singing traditional tunes to sing their own compositions, taken by the hand of Bob Dylan. Rock bands and singer-songwriters still rule a big part of the music scene today (sometime with interchangeable roles, in fact many rock bands split and their members end as singer-songwriters). And these revolutions happened while jazz or rhythm & blues musicians continued releasing works of an astonishing high level, not forgetting the “industrial” products coming from factories as Motown or a Brill Building that incorporated new talents as brilliant as Phil Spector. Come on, AM Forumers, enter into the fascinating universe of the early sixties but, be careful, it may cause addiction.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of May. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

You may find useful to have a look at the albums and songs lists of:
- Acclaimed Music: 1962 albums, 1963 albums, 1964 albums, 1962 songs, 1963 songs and 1964 songs
- Rate Your Music: 1962 albums, 1963 albums, 1964 albums, 1962 songs, 1963 songs, 1964 songs and, since some of the album considered compilations in Rate Your Music are eligible on this poll, the 1962 compilations, 1963 compilations and 1964 compilations.

Have a nice poll…

Sadly I’m not going to have time enough to compile votes and search for eligibility questions this month because of my exams on 30th of May. Don’t expect anything from me except my own list. But… I’ll be back on the 31st!!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1962, 1963 and 1964

Hey guys, please don't forget Jacques Brel's Olympia 1964 (better than Olympia 61)one of the best live albums of all time, featuring "Amsterdam", a song that was never recorded in the studio.

RYM has it as 1965 but according to Les Editions Jacques Brel it was first released in late 1964 (recorded in october '64)

So please don't forget it in your lists. Honorio, I know you love that album. And Miguel too, and everyone !!!

1962-66 is Brel's peak period IMO

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1962, 1963 and 1964

Yes, Nicolas, it's my #1 album for 1962-1964.
And many thanks

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1962, 1963 and 1964

As I told before, a fascinating music period with so many new styles brilliantly showcased in your lists so far (a big welcome to Chris and to Harold Wexler!!). The Top 16 of songs are in my all-time top 250 songs but I love every song on the Top 25 (what the h…, I love every song on the Top 60). But for me the this edition at the end was a tight battle between Jacques Brel and Bob Dylan with three albums each on the final list, won by a slight margin by Dylan (he finally got the top spot for albums and managed to put 5 songs in the final list instead the 4 songs by Brel).

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: VARIOUS "Shut Down" (1963)

The Spotify links for albums and songs are painfully incomplete this time, with absences as notable as The Beatles or Bob Dylan. Oh well…

My favourite Spanish song of 1963: Raimon's "Diguem no"

Protest. During the early sixties there were protest singers all over the world. But if there was a place and a time with justified reasons to protest it was Spain under the yoke of Franco’s fascist regime. More than twenty years after the end of the Spanish Civil War and after two successive silenced generations the young singer-songwriters began to represent a whole new generation that was willing to express their ideas despite the fear. Like protest-singer pioneer Raimon (Ramón Pelegero) perfectly described in another song: "I come from a silence / long and ancient / I come from a silence / that’s not resigned / I come from a silence / that people will break / I come from a struggle / that’s dull and constant". Raimon was going to be the voice of that people that was about to break this long silence.
And the main reasons of that instant resonance with his public (despite singing in Catalan, a minority language) were his sincerity, his simplicity, his directness, his passion and his compromise. When other singers hide his message inside dark metaphors to fool the strict censorship of Franco’s regime he chose to put the message on the front with simple words that everyone could understand. And when many of his peers came from the erudite Catalonian bourgeoisie of Barcelona he came from a working class family of Xativa, a village of Valencia. His combative attitude met with continuous song prohibitions and concert cancelations.
His signature song may be his very first song, “Al vent” (“To the Wind”), but I’ve chosen a song from his second EP because it shows better his direct approach. It's surprising to see a song with sentences as "We've seen the fear / be law for everyone" or "We've seen hunger / be the bread of the working men" pass the censorship of the time, only needing to change one sentence (see lyrics later). Maybe the censors were still not used (they became more and more severe with newer singer-songwriters especially in the 70s) but a smart move of Raimon could achieve this censorship overlook, he masked the song as the B-side of a song that just won the first price of the Festival of Mediterranean Song so they could have problems of prohibiting both songs when the A-side song (“S'en va anar”, “She Left”) was already a hit.
Someone can argue about the limited qualities of the music itself. But this was not the point then, the point was in the message, Raimon talked in his verses about a past and a present filled with fear, blood, hunger and prison. But especially he exploded in the chorus with a naïve but powerful “No / I say no / Let's say no / We are not part of that world”, a sentence that not only can be applied to that particular historical time in Spain. Naïve, yes, but someone had to say it. Someone had to shout it.

DIGUEM NO
Composer and performer: RAIMON
First release: 1963 ("S’en va anar i 3 cançons de Raimon" 7" EP)
Length: 2’08”

Ara que som junts
diré el que tu i jo sabem
i que sovint oblidem.

Hem vist la por
ser llei per a tots.

Hem vist la sang
-que sols fa sang-
ser llei del món.

No,
jo dic no,
diguem no.
Nosaltres no som d'eixe món.

Hem vist la fam
ser pa
dels treballadors.

Hem vist tancats
a la presó
homes plens de raó.
(on the 1963 first released version this verse featured some self-censored lyrics to avoid the prohibition, all the posterior versions featured the reference to prison:
Hem vist qu’han fet
callar a molts
homes plens de raó).

No,
jo dic no,
diguem no.
Nosaltres no som d'eixe món.
No,
diguem no.
Nosaltres no som d'eixe món.

LET’S SAY NO

Now that we're together
I'll say what you and me know
but we often forget.

We've seen the fear
be law for everyone.
We've seen the blood
-that only makes blood-
be law of the world.

No,
I say no,
let's say no.
We're not part of that world.

We've seen hunger
be the bread
of the working men.

We've seen shut
in prison
men full of rightness.
(on the 1963 first released version this verse featured some self-censored lyrics to avoid the prohibition, all the posterior versions featured the reference to prison:
We've seen that
they forced to shut up
many men full of rightness).

No,
I say no,
let's say no.
We're not part of that world.
No,
let's say no.
We're not part of that world.

The original 1963 version is not available on You Tube, here you can listen a live version from an historical recital in Madrid in 1975 (it was supposed to be the first of 4 concerts but the first one was almost a political riot so the authorities prohibited the next three recitals).

My favourite Spanish song of 1964: Francesc Pi de la Serra's "L'home del carrer"

Seeing it with a perspective of decades it’s obvious that the sounds from USA (especially the ones coming from African Americans) won on the long run. Every local tradition on every corner of the world has surrendered to those sounds and now every country has its own pop, rock or hip hop scene. But it was not the case for the inquisitive and compromised Spanish youth of the early sixties. Of course some styles coming from the USA were respected, especially bebop and Greenwich Village folk, but the main influence and the guiding light was French Chanson. In particular two big names on every corner of the spectrum: Georges Brassens with his humorous but sharp pen and his minimalistic but delicious arrangements and Jacques Brel with his vivid dissection of customs and feelings and his expressive and dramatic mise-en-scène.
In fact the Catalonian folk scene of the early sixties was grouped under the name Nova Cançó (New Song) trying to mirror the French Chanson. The common threads of the Nova Cançó singers were: a) the use of Catalan as exclusive language as opposition to the dominant Spanish-Castilian, b) the basic music backing Brassens-style and c) the combative attitude against Franco's fascist regime. The scene grouped round Els Setze Jutges (“The Sixteen Judges” named after the bizarre Catalonian traditional tongue twister "Steze jutges d’un jutjat mengen fetge d’un penjat”, “Sixteen judges from a court eat the liver of a hanged”) that were more like a hip-hip posse or the line-up of a folk festival than a real band. By the beginning of the decade they were a handful of singer-songwriters that performed and recorded separately and they began to add new members till they reached the number of… sixteen, obviously. The last incorporations at the end of the decade were the most important and they were going to head the movement during the peak of the style on the early 70s, names like Joan Manuel Serrat, Maria del Mar Bonet or Lluís Llach.
Judge number 5 and probably the most representative of the style and idiosyncrasy of the Setze Jutges was Quico Pi de la Serra but showing some differences with the founding members. First his popular origins (the first four members were going to became within a few years renowned writers, psychiatrists and professors), secondly his emphasis in the music part (unlike many of his peers that emphasized the message over the music) and thirdly a distinct influence of jazz and blues that lasted his whole career. The song I’ve selected from his second EP, “L'home del carrer” (“The Man in the Street”) exemplifies this features. The song satirizes the man-in-the-street, the common man of that historical period painting a grey and depressing picture not exempt of some empathy. The tone of parody is amplified by some tricks like changing the swearword that you expect to hear because of the rhyme for another word, for instance pecat (sin) for merder (big shit) or pelut (thick) for fotut (fucked up). But this mocking approach barely hides his ferocious attack to the political system that created a society filled with grey and sad man-in-the-street.
Musically I want to point to this playful jazz waltz tempo and the tasteful playing of a jazz quartet including Pi de la Serra on rhythm guitar but especially the excellent French guitar player René Thomas that made a terrific work with his guitar intertwining with the vocals and somehow punctuating the story. I can also recommend the 1967 LP version that added exquisite woodwind and string arrangements. But don't get fooled by the jazz flavours, you can see/listen here mainly the large shade of George Brassens and a whole music generation auprès de son arbre.

L'HOME DEL CARRER
Composer and performer: FRANCESC PI DE LA SERRA
First release: 1964 ("Jo sóc Francesc Pi de la Serra" 7" EP)
Length: 3’33”

THE MAN IN THE STREET

This little man do things right,
he always walk, he always walk,
this little man can’t do anything,
from now on I’ll call him the man in the street.

He does not wake up late, he shaves him so well
-the left sideburn, the left sideburn-
he has a scanty breakfast because he hasn’t got any,
he do things right, the man in the street.

He takes out a cigarette, oh no, he hasn't got any,
he scrounges for smoking, he scrounges for smoking,
his friends pretend not to notice when they see him,
you're going to smoke very little, man in the street.

He goes down with the elevator, oh no, he hasn't got any,
he walks down quickly, he walks down quickly,
he met Roser downstairs,
you're blushing, man in the street.

The wife doesn't know it, oh no, he hasn't got one,
I shouldn't have thought of it, I shouldn't have thought of it,
she died and he doesn't remember why,
this is a… sin, man in the street.

He opens his little car, oh no, he hasn't got any,
he hasn't got a dime, he hasn't got a dime,
he doesn't want to change his last buck,
an embarrassing affair, man in the street.

He goes walking to work, that's a thing he got,
he would like much less, he would like much less,
if there is no money there is nothing to do,
you got it… thick, man in the street.

His head aches, oh no, he hasn't got head,
he had one before, he had one before,
he lose it one day and never found it,
you don’t have nothing, man in the street,
man in the street,
man in the street,
man in the street.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1962, 1963 and 1964

Hey Nicolas (or anyone),

Do you know if it is possible to listen to "Olympia 64" anywhere on the web?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1962, 1963 and 1964

You can download it at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=M5AJCM1H , but that's not exactly legal.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1962, 1963 and 1964

I kinda missed nicolas' message, but Henrik reminded me about Olympia 64 and I was wondering if I can switch "The Rolling Stones - England's Newest Hitmakers" with "Jacques Brel - Olympia 64" on my 1964 albums list.

9. Monica Zetterlund & Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
I really liked "Olympia 64", but it is a bit hard for me to judge because I'm not able to compare it with Brel's studio albums that I haven't heard in full. Furthermore, the first time I heard Brel's songs was through Scott Walker's amazing voice and arrangements, and Jacques recordings inevitably come out as a bit lo-fi in comparison.

Nevertheless, if a change is still allowed, I would like to put it in my 1964 list as follows.

1. Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
2. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
3. Jan Johansson - Jazz på svenska
4. Jerry Lee Lewis - Live at the Star Club, Hamburg
5. The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go

Stephan
I was wondering if I can switch "The Rolling Stones - England's Newest Hitmakers" with "Jacques Brel - Olympia 64" on my 1964 albums list.

Of course, but you probably want to keep the first Stones album as your number 6 so the album will receive 20 points from you. Is it OK?
Miguel
Sorry, Honorio, but I was unable to finish the list. Can I post it tomorrow? (¡Pofavó, pofavó!).

Desde luego, ningún problema, pero veo que no ha hecho falta. Geniales listas (again), Miguel.
Beans
Hi Honorio, I wasn't able to manage to cobble together 5 albums for each year so I'm just going to submit an overall top 10. I hope this is ok?

Of course, Beans, it was only recommended an overall Top 5 for the whole three-year period, not for every year. I said “was” because it’s the last edition of three-year periods, from now on a month per year as the previous polls. And a big big welcome to you!!
Henrik
Nevertheless, if a change is still allowed, I would like to put it in my 1964 list as follows.
8. The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica
9. Jacques Brel - Olympia 64
10. Monica Zetterlund & Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby

Yes, Henrik, why not? Anything that could push Jacques to the Top 5 of 1964 is good enough. Although maybe there’s too much competition for that partiocular year. I don’t want to advance it but maybe his chances are bigger for 1962...

First results soon...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1962, 1963 and 1964

Yep, that's great.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1962

First results at last. The participation increased this time a little, with 3 new voters (a big big welcome to Harold Wexler, Chris and Beans!). And of course many thanks to the regulars for your (again) superb lists.

The best albums of 1962 according to Acclaimed Music Forum were:
1. Howlin' Wolf - Howlin' Wolf
2. Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music
3. Jacques Brel - Jacques Brel
4. Booker T. & the M.G.s - Green Onions
5. Françoise Hardy - Tous les garçons et les filles

The fierce bluesman Chester Arthur Burnett heads a black & white list, with two black American singers, two white French singers and a black & white instrumental band. Yes, believe it, two French artists. And none of them was voted by Romain, one of the two French voters of the Forum!

The rest (not qualified) of the Top 10:
6. Charlie Mingus - Tijuana Moods
7. John Coltrane - 'Live' at the Village Vanguard
8. Duke Ellington - Money Jungle
9. Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba
10. Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan

Yes, I know, of course. I should've said French-singing artists.

nicolas
Françoise Hardy is really a surprise !

Well, Charlie Driggs put her at #1 of the whole three-year period and she was highly placed on other lists (Henrik, Miguel and mine).

Honorio
from now on a month per year as the previous polls

I obviously meant "a year per month", otherwise it would be obssesive: "list your favourite songs of April of 1965"

Honorio

For a year as awesome as 1965 (quite possibly my favorite year in music regarding songs) that wouldn't be a bad idea actually.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1962

It seems from Slick's answer in the 1965 thread that his lists are based on a combination of record sales, radio airplay, critical acclaim, longevity and respected opinions, rather than his personal preferences, and should therefore not be counted for the final top 10.

Slick, I hope you agree with me about this. And of course you should correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1963

Time now for the best albums of 1963 according to Acclaimed Music Forum:
1. Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
2. Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
3. James Brown - 'Live' at the Apollo
4. The Beatles - With the Beatles
5. Various - A Christmas Gift for You From Philles Records

Bob Dylan got the top spot with more than 100 points of difference with Charles Mingus, being voted for (almost) every participant on the poll. The rest of the top 10:

6. The Beatles - Please Please Me
7. Sam Cooke - Night Beat
8. John Coltrane - Impressions
9. The Beach Boys - Surfer Girl
10. Donald Byrd - A New Perspective

As you can see, a Beatles album not going to the final round. This forum is different than the others, that’s for sure. And what do you think? Will the recent object of a thread “Beatles for Sale” pass to the second round? The answer soon…

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1964

Let’s go with the best albums of 1964:
1. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
2. Bob Dylan - Another Side of Bob Dylan
3. Stan Getz & João Gilberto (Featuring Antônio Carlos Jobim) - Getz/Gilberto
4. Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
5. Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'

The Beatles won the 1964 battle with more that 200 points of difference but it seems that Bob Dylan may win the 1960s war, with 3 albums so far in the final round against only two by the Fab Four (yes, "Beatles for Sale" accompanied "Please Please Me" to the "almost" group). And the introspective Dylan won his own battle against the political Dylan. The rest of the Top 10 (this time is really painful to leave out these wonderful albums):

6. Jacques Brel - Olympia 64
7. The Beatles - Beatles for Sale
8. The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones
9. Ennio Morricone - Per un pugno di dollari
10. The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica

After presenting a fabulous Top 10 featuring some surprises that’s all for today. In a couple of days the best songs of 1962.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1962

Time for the best songs of 1962:
1. Booker T. & the MG’s - Green Onions
2. Dick Dale and the Del-Tones - Miserlou
3. Sam Cooke - Bring It on Home to Me
4. The John Barry Seven & Orchestra - The James Bond Theme
5. The Beatles - Love Me Do
6. Gene Chandler - Duke of Earl
7. Little Eva - The Loco-Motion
8. Elvis Presley - Return to Sender
9. Quincy Jones - Soul Bossa Nova
10. The Crystals - He's a Rebel

As Henrik perfectly pointed, 1962 was "the year when vocals were unnecessary". Four out of ten songs were instrumental tracks, and three of them on the Top five. An the vocal tracks were no less terrific.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1962

Nice list!

Interesting that "Love Me Do" was immediately voted out of the Beatles survivor game and now it ranks as the 5th best song of 1962...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1963

Sorry for the tremendous delay but finally here they are, the best songs of 1963:
1. The Ronettes - Be My Baby
2. Roy Orbison - In Dreams
3. Bob Dylan - Blowin' in the Wind
4. Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
5. The Beatles - She Loves You
6. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie
7. Bob Dylan - Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
8. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
9. The Beatles - Please Please Me
10. The Beach Boys - In My Room

So we have 3 Dylans versus 2 Beatles, will Dylan won the battle? Humm, let’s wait for 1964. I didn’t voted for that Beach Boys tune but I’m delighted to see that introspective number entering the Top 10 instead their classic 1963 surf anthems like “Surfin’ USA” or “Surfer Girl”.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1963

"I Want to Hold Your Hand" didn't make the cut!?!

It is ranked as 23rd most acclaimed song of all time. I'm curious where it finished in this poll.

EDIT: It had 99 points by my count.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1963

Nope, Chris, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was included only on three Top 20s, and with the corrected lists by Slick (it was #1 on Slicknation lists but it dropped to #9 on his personal list) it “only” got a total of 64 points, finishing on #18 for the year. It was quite expected anyway, on other threads (I’m not sure if it was on Beatles Survivor or on the first edition of Bracketology) it was considered by some AMers as a widely overated song.

I still find that surprising given the placements of Love Me Do, She Loves You, and Please Please Me, which are generally not regarded as significantly better than I Want to Hold Your Hand around these parts. In my opinion, I Want To Hold Your Hand is the best song out of the four, though obviously overrated.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1963

Jackson
In my opinion, I Want To Hold Your Hand is the best song out of the four.

This is my feeling too.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1964

Sorry again for the delay, really busy lately. Time for the best songs of 1964:
1. The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun
2. The Kinks - You Really Got Me
3. The Beach Boys - I Get Around
4. Dionne Warwick - Walk on By
5. Stan Getz & João Gilberto - The Girl From Ipanema
6. The Zombies - She's Not There
7. The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby
8. The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'
9. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
10. Jacques Brel - Amsterdam

So no Dylan songs on 1964! And only one from The Beatles!! Anyway a balanced list with 4 British, 4 Americans, 1 Brazilian and 1 Belgian completing a Top 10 filled with immortal songs. Thanks everyone and see you in 1965.

The Excel file.
