Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Nassim
If Henrik or somebody else can post the formula used for the top artist in AM I would be thankful. I will use it to make my premilinary list based on my songs and albums lists !

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

I agree with having a sharper decline in points.

I don't think this formula is good for artist poll, because it puts a lot weight to number of votes. I prefer the formula Moonbeam used for the first poll.

What was that formula?

I think the formula was similar to this:

Points = [100/sqrt(position)] + [101-position] / 2

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

When is this starting? Most of the major polls have finished by now.

Sorry that I've neglected this thread!

Oh, I'm happy to accept lists now!

I just want to sort out the deadline and maximum number of artists that will count.

So far, it seems like 100 artists is the way to go.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Yikes, I just gave the formula for the 2008 Song Poll, not the Artist Poll!

We eventually settled on a formula I came up with. It's not a pretty formula, but it seemed to serve the purpose last time. Of course, I'm open to recommendations for changing it.

The formula I used was:

12.28344771/TAN((position+10)/90)

Here are the points allocated for each of the top 100 positions:

1 100
2 91.58

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

I guess I need to make this clear as the lists are coming in:

If you are in doubt about whether to count an artist and its offshoots, alter egos, etc. as multiple entires or as one, check AM!

So, Parliament/Funkadelic counts as one artist, but George Clinton is counted separately. Gary Numan/Tubeway Army counts as one artist, as does Jonathan Richman/The Modern Lovers. But Eric Clapton, Cream and Derek and the Dominos count as 3 separate artists.

I'd also prefer submitted bands with prefixes to include those prefixes- so "The Cure" would be preferable to "Cure, The" or "Cure".

Absolutely!

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Stone and Mindrocker, I need corrections to your list before I can accept them! Some of the artists you've combined as one actually count as multiple artists.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Sorry about the confusion, Moonbeam. You can count the following artists:

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Mindrocker
Sorry about the confusion, Moonbeam. You can count the following artists:
Stooges
Underground Resistance
Wu-Tang Clan
Julian Cope
Nick Cave
Basic Channel productions
Van Der Graaf Generator
Josh Homme
Will Oldham
Arthur Collins
Mike Patton
Juan Atkins.

Thanks! Just to be clear, you could count these duplicates as 2 artists within the list. For instance, it'd be fine to submit a list with, say, Nick Cave and The Birthday Party.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Seven lists have come in so far, and there are only five artists who have been nominated on each list!

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Out of curiosity Frank, why is there no Springsteen on your list? I would say with some of the names on there that he'd be near the top--or at least make the top 100.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

I don't love Springsteen (or the Beach Boys, for that matter). That said, it's a fair call out that Springsteen is more deserving than KISS. But there is no Springsteen album that I ever reach for - just not my thing.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Frank

26 The Modern Lovers
50 Jonathan Richman

These count as 1 artist according to AM! This gives you room for another artist on your list.

88 Charlatans UK

This brings up something important that I hadn't mentioned. Artists sometimes share names with other, completely separate artists (often from different countries). It would help me greatly if people who submit lists include your favorite album/song by any artist who does not appear in AM's artist list.

To my knowledge, the only artist in my top 100 not listed on AM is Michael Penn. He is the younger brother of Sean Penn. My favorite album by him is March, his debut, and my favorite track is "No Myth."

Re: Listyguy's List

Was there a decision if this would go until the end of May? I can turn one in but it would probably have to be in a few weeks...

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

How many lists have come in? Any clues? I am really excited!

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Only 9 lists so far, but they've been quite interesting. I think this poll will be a bit different to last poll!

I think we should formalize the deadline. How about the end of May?

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

End of May sounds good. Almost everybody gets out of school sometime in May, so there should be solid participation.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

I haven't gotten any lists for weeks. Let's get them together, people!

'Grand Prix' has always been my favourite, but you can't wrong with 'Bandwagonesque' or 'Songs From Northern Britain' either...

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

I love that we're recruiting new fans to the Fanclub. I originally favored Bandwagonesque, but Grand Prix is perhaps my favorite now. Bandwagonesque is edgier. Grand Prix is prettier.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

I'd also go with Grand Prix, definitely better than Bandwagonesque in my opinion. As for The Beta Band, I guess Hot Shots II is okay, but I don't think anything they ever did came close to "The Three E.P.'s" (or actually just Dry The Rain).

I've expanded my list to a top 100 but I'm gonna tinker with it a little more before posting it.

Yeah, I was worried about that, but some people seem to really like Hot Shots II, so I guess I'll try it at some point. Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I was going to go with Bandwagonesque, but now I'll get Grand Prix first.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Just sent you mine, 'beam. Let me know if you don't get it.

I won't post the whole thing here, but the top 10, in order, are: R.E.M., Beatles, Radiohead, Clash, VU, Pixies, Talking Heads, Bowie, X and Prince.

Usual caveat with schleuse lists: I spin these off the top of my head quickly...I'm not maintaining/updating a big spreadsheet. Any resemblance between this list and the one I submitted for the last poll might be almost entirely coincidental.

Easily my favorite Dutch artist. Where's your list?

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Still working on it, I'm using a formula similar to what Henrik is using for artists but on my own album/song lists, and I'm just perfecting it a little bit.

Boudewijn will feature somewhere around the 70th place, I love his work (the album "Voor de Overlevenden" in particular) but he's not among the top 50 because I'm not such a big fan of the Dutch language (strange for someone from the Netherlands, I know).

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Jackson
Stephan
As for The Beta Band, I guess Hot Shots II is okay, but I don't think anything they ever did came close to "The Three E.P.'s" (or actually just Dry The Rain).

Yeah, I was worried about that, but some people seem to really like Hot Shots II, so I guess I'll try it at some point. Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I was going to go with Bandwagonesque, but now I'll get Grand Prix first.

In my opinion, "The Three E.P.'s" is their best by far but "Hot Shots II" is really good and "Heroes to Zeros" is not bad.
I also recommend the 2 EP's of King Biscuit Time (Steve Mason as a solo artist): "Sings Nelly Foggit's Blues in Me and the Pharoahs" and "No Style".

No Timberlake on your list? Oh thats disappointing.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Finally done with my list. I'm using the same formula Henrik uses on the website because I find it incredibly hard to list artists, and this is the most objective way I could come up with. I changed the formula a little to penalize people with only one album very high up the list, but otherwise it's pretty much the same.

1) Bob Dylan

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

I will post my list before the deadline. I have no time for comments, but I could probably add my favourite song next to each artist. Since quite a few voters have done that, how about a favourite songs feature when you post the final results, Moonbeam?

I was going to post the top few songs from the results of the recent song poll for each artist. I'm open to changing that, though! Let's see what everybody has to say. The only thing I can think of that detracts from this is that not everyone will submit a favorite song for each artist. Then again, not everyone who participates in this poll will have participated in the song poll...

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

Depeche Mode
No Timberlake on your list? Oh thats disappointing.

I've never listened to a whole JT album, only his songs (and the many featuring him) that play in the radio. And I must say, I love almost all of them. What Goes Around Comes Around is one of the best pop things made in the noughties (all time #39 in last poll). Summer Love, Rock Your Body, Cry Me a River and LoveStoned are other great ones (and I don't get all that hype for My Love, such a boring song). I think he surely would appear in my list if I knew his albums also, being probably near Nelly Furtado in the rank.

Nassim
I can not choose between I Don't Know, Intergalactic, Sure Shot, A Year and a Day, Eggman, Looking Down the Barrell of a Gun, The Negociation Limerick File and Sabotage.

It happened to me exactly with the Beasties! I coudn't choose between Sabotage, Fight for Your Right (To Party), Eggman, High Plains Drifter, The Sounds of Science, and Hey Ladies. But almost randomly chose Fight for Your Right.

That has to be one of the best band names, ever.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

OK, I think I have things under control now for the moment. Why don't we set the deadline for 11:59 PM on June 3rd? That gives everyone around 44 hours to finish their lists.

Re: 2010 AMF Artist Poll: Let's get this thing going!

So can I post the same list of the previous poll?
