It's hard to believe that Newsom's Have One On Me managed to do great in Europe and only 17 in America. I really thought she was inside at least of the top 15. But number 3 is awesome, and very impressed about gorillaz debuting at the top, i'm liking that record and although someone actually predicted it would debut at the top, i really didn't see that coming!
Does anyone knows if there's any critically acclaimed bands releasing albums or returning in April ? With the exception of the mgmt album, most of the bands i like are only coming back from May. The new Coco Rosie album leaked two weeks ago, i listened and i deleted... more of the same. Some of my friends can't believe i adore Joanna Newsom and hate CocoRosie... they believe they're on the same baby talk level. Take a look at their hideous new album cover and you'll see one of the reasons i hate them, listen to the new album and there's the last ultimate reason.
It would be worth it to mention that the switch from Observer Music Monthly to The Fly possibly boosted Gorillaz over Newsom and Beach House. The Fly gave Plastic Beach a 5/5 but, as far as I know, has not even reviewed Teen Dream or Have One On Me yet.
Still, I'm happy about the top 3 and they already have some competition come next month: the new Erykah Badu, and maybe more.
@ HRS: Slant, Popmatters and Rolling Stone were lukewarm about Have One On Me. Just so happens they are all US sources.
Really? I'm surprised nobody picked Gorillaz higher than 6. I haven't won this since Bon Iver.
Can it be any three on the list I want now? If so:
Laura Marling
Gonjasufi
Titus Andronicus
Should I email you my mailing address? (It's changed since last time.)
My pick for April: MGMT #5
April's a light month compared to March and May, and that's the only one on the MC list that stands out to me. In May there's New Pornos, The National and LCD Soundsystem (According to MC which has been known to be wrong).
I saw the reviews of Slant and PopMatters, disagree a lot with them, but at least they wrote 2 reviews, it wasn't the 3 lines negative review Rolling Stone gave to Ys in 2006. This time they gave 3.5 to Joanna. Allmusic also gave that rating, and Chicago Tribune and AV Club something similar. I don't know why i was surprised about the album being placed at 17, cause seeing the grades of these reviews, the europeans and british were the ones who build that 86 Metascore!
Laura Marling! This chick better jump next month, her album is GOOD STUFF.
I don't know why she makes me think about Rickie Lee Jones (love this girl), they don't have almost nothing in common!
Next time i'll predict Badu inside the top 10 and maybe MGMT, although it received good reviews, i wanna see the overall first!
BillAdama, yes, please mail me your new mail-adress, as I wasn´t able to reach you with the old one.
Another thing to keep in mind about this list compared to the metascore is that this list is based on three regional components weighted equally. So if US critics ignore an album that UK critics love, or vice versa, it will drag it's rank way down.
Stefan, did you get my mail? I haven't gotten an acknowledgment.
