Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

Brad
I simply love this song. It provides a beautiful, epic denouement (?) to (arguably) the Stones finest album.

Brad, you seem to like those epic album closers. Thanks again for your #1 vote on Fillmore Jive. I'm very happy to see it in the top-500.

Kinda surprised New Year's Day only got 5 votes, but I guess there is a faction who will not vote any U2, and the rest will split their votes among quite a number of their songs. I gotta keep reminding myself that top-500 is pretty impressive in this poll.

Also a little surprised no one had a higher vote than my 53 for Groove Is in the Heart. My first reaction was I must have had this sterling party song higher than that, until I realized how many great songs I had in my top-52. I wouldn't have been adverse to a flatter points system. There is really not a huge difference betwen my number 500 and my number 100.

With respect to Kim Carnes... well I'll save my ammo on that one. I've got an epic post planned that will have to wait until after I get back from my vacation in a couple of weeks, but Carnes will be examined. I hope Stephan and Midaso will still talk to me afterwards.

Bjork may be another who suffers from vote spread. I love a large portion of her work, but more than other artists who I love, she has an absolute stand-out track that I consider to be clearly her best... my #11 Hyper-Ballad. I know that others don't agree with me, but I also think Vespertine was a flat disappointment and Moonbeam thinks it is the greatest album of the decade. So even among fans of a given artist, taste is subjective.

Jackson, how did you handle votes for live versions of songs? I voted for the live Folsom Prison Blues, and am curious whether my vote was counted with the '56 single? (I would be just as happy if it were counted.)

I voted for 8 Stevie Wonder songs, but really dropped the ball by forgetting to vote for As.

I must admit I am disappointed that Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin) only got five votes. I've noticed before that the respect for that song on these forums is not particularly widespread, and that also goes for its outside the top-300 placement on the AM list. To me it is a clear top-100 single that I thought had wide consensus, but apparently I'm wrong.

I voted for both Suffragette City and Ziggy Stardust pretty high, but I find it hard to think of them as separate songs... the best part of both great songs is the end of one leading into the beginning of the other.

And finally... I did not vote for Steely Dan's "Doctor Wu," but I have recently fallen for Minutemen's cover from Double Nickles on the Dime. It got a top-200 vote from me. I'm curious if Fred has heard it and what he thinks of it.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

A few people cast votes for live versions of certain songs; I just counted them along with the studio singles.

I agree with you about the Sly & The Family Stone song "Thank You." I have no idea why that track isn't more hugely popular and acclaimed. The bassline is so immediately great that it instantly turns the song into perhaps the sonically definitive funk track. It was my number 109 song and it should have been much higher on the main list.

I salute their choice of a song to cover. However they turn the song upside down in a way that strips it of its emotional and melodic content. All in line with their style/aestethic. I have listened to the cover 0.75 times (plus one more time for this post) and immediately wanted to stop listening. So, I'm biased :)

I am only 20, but I still remember relegating this song to my guilty pleasures for being uncool.

And finally... I did not vote for Steely Dan's "Doctor Wu," but I have recently fallen for Minutemen's cover from Double Nickles on the Dime. It got a top-200 vote from me. I'm curious if Fred has heard it and what he thinks of it.

I definitely see where you are coming from. I had no particular attachment to the original (although I do for a number of other Steely Dan songs), so it is probably a lot easier for me to go for this cover. But, for example, I've heard way too many covers of my #4 song, "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," some from artists I respect. None of them get Dylan's shocking, subtle mixture of tenderness and cruelty, and that loss makes the covers feel inessential to me, even if they are clearly trying to go in a different direction.

As for the Minutemen's Dr. Wu, I particularly enjoy the interplay between their voices. (I've always loved when voices sing in octaves, although it is done so peculiarly here.) But you're right that they are excising a lot (and not just because they only do a single verse and chorus). Like you say, it's in line with their aesthetic.

One thing I was concerned was that you would think they were mocking the original. I don't think they are... although I can't say I'm entirely sure about that. I'd basically say that it sheds no light on the original, but I think it casts a light of its own.

The best part of this, though, is that I too played the Steely Dan original a few time in preparing this post, and realized I was missing some nice stuff in the lyrics and in Fagan's vocals, and have a newfound appreciation for the original. So thanks Fred!

Stephan
and Midaso thanks for helping me put Bette Davis Eyes in the top 500.

Haha - well it was partly because you had it so high in the last poll that made me give it another chance. I enjoyed the song somewhat at that stage, but it's become an all-time favourite.

Wow - 'Don't Stop Believin' in the top 500 is surprise - I think I was the only voter for it last time...

Some slightly disappointing placements from New Order and Joy Division but probably not all that surprising...

"As" is a great song. I never get tired of it. I wonder why it is so easily forgotten by so many. I am also surprised that it doesn't even get on the bubble for the AM 3000.

Doctor Wu barely missed my top 150 (167).

The top 500 of my list has plenty of Stevie Wonder (16) and Steely Dan (15).

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

NMH - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
3/4 time signature for ever (I have 3 on my top 10, 6 or 7 in my top 10, a dozen in my top 100 and a bit less after that)
I'm not much surprised that this album has no song on the top 400, that is exactly the kind of albums much people loves as a whole, not for some particular song (even though in my personal opinion, nothing comes close to that one)

Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Well, I guess we won't see much heavy metal in the list, that's one of the best songs of the genre and it ends that low !

Dirty Projectors - Stillness if the Move
Strange indie hit of the year, sort of indie-acoustic-prog-r'n'b. Fell in love at first listen but start getting tired of it

DJ Shadow - Building Steam With a Grain of Salt
Yippiiiie, one of my top 10 songs I did not expect to reach the top 500. I don't have much to say, just listen to it if you don't know it !

Beastie Boys - Sabotage
My second favourite band ever (and I think the 2nd most represented artist in my list). That's not their most representative song (but I doubt there really is one) but, like most of their best, sounds like nothing else anybody (including them) did before or after.

Modest Mouse - Float On
Dumb optimism is necessary sometimes !

Thanks for tip!!

I was also wondering whether you still had any of the following in your list this year.
Tish Hinojosa - Donde Voy (Where I Go) ( 1989 )
The Shins - Saint Simon ( 2003 )
Split Enz - Message To My Girl ( 1983 )
Tanita Tikaram - Twist In My Sobriety ( 1988 )

I am not familiar with any of these songs. If you didn't include them on your 2010 list, I wonder why not? Is there some characteristic about songs that appealed more to you in 2008 than today?

Agreed! I actually think I'm going to be quite disappointed in the overall list based on what has come up already. I hope to be wrong, though!

Fan: Nicolas (57)

I didn't vote for that song !! I never heard it. That must have been my froggie mate Nassim

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

A few further observations

- schwah : "Hyper Ballad" is my # 238 (and my favorite Björk song too)

- A song is a song, no matter the version. So I think that you were right Jackson to put various versions under the same songs. This is a song poll not a "recording" poll. Of course, that doesn't count covers.

- Journey that high in this forum ? I love surprises.

- "Tainted love" : I love this song. I'm not a big fan of 80's pop (had my share of it when I was a teen), but that one (and the whole album by the way) is a true killer. # 171 on my list

- "You Still Believe in Me" is my # 262 and IMO one of the highlights of Pet Sounds

-"Summertime Blues" : my 273 and a great rock and teen anthem that was brillantly covered by the Who. Props to Vgrd who always submits solid lists.

- "You Shook Me All Night Long" : damn good stupid song. Who said that rock had to be smart ?

-"Heart of Gold" : a classic (my #231)

-"As" : in the lower slots of my list. Great song from a great album.

- Songs I love that weren't on my list : "Straight Outta Compton", "Hammersmith Palais" (Brad, I love Clash's takes on reggae but I prefer the Guns of Brixton), and both U2 songs.

I was about to comment this as the biggest surprise of the poll (and very great choise). But actually it was my #57.
I sign Nassim's comments about this song. After first listen I was ready to announce it to the best song of the year. But I'm not sure will it age well (or has it already lost part of its glamour).

I don't like the trend of mediocre Beatles songs beating the best songs by other artists, but unfortunately it will continue.

"Leaf House," one of a few songs with three very high-placing votes, was a nice surprise. I listened to it for the first time and was impressed despite low expectations based on my feelings for MPP.

"Pale Blue Eyes," "Only Shallow," "Unsatisfied": why aren't these higher?

"Pale Blue Eyes," "Only Shallow," "Unsatisfied": why aren't these higher?

I don't get the acclaim on those 3 songs, so I would not answer to that ^^

Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows : Take that Anthony !
4th QOTSA song on my list (and 3rd from its album). If I could learn instantaneously how to play one song, I would learn to play this one on drums ; but don't take that as a "technical" point of view, and I don't care if it's hard to play (it is, but there is much worse I think), it's just that I think I could not get more pleasure (musically speaking of course) than by playing exactly that and having all the band playing with me.

Jeff Buckley - Grace : 5th 3/4 time signature song on my list. I'm glad other people realize that it is Buckley's greatest achievement, raw and intense.

Animal Collective - Leaf House : another 3/4 song (more or less) and my favourite AC song ; that's when they first realized what they were able to do and paved the way for their following albums, especially Feels which shared the same hypnotic feeling. That's clearly not a common and classic song, but it remains very welcoming and warm, even fun.

The Beatles are The Beatles. No one dominates like them.

The first point that I would make is that the mediocrity of the Beatles songs that have made the top 500 so far is ripe for discussion and clarification.

I would challenge those who object the dominance by the Beatles to indicate which other performers merit consideration as peers to the Beatles in terms of such dominance. I expect that many cogent discussions and positions can be made regarding such candidate peers and look forward to such discussions.

As a starting point, one would possibly look at the top 5 performers from each decade since the 1970's, e.g., David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Prince, Smiths, U2, R.E.M, Nirvana, Beck, White Stripes, OutKast, LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire and Bruce Springsteen.

Please, no discussion about the Beatles or it will ruin this thread !

explanation : We've already had a 1000 discussions like that and everytime it turns bad, it attracts weirdos who write this huge posts and who never go away. I'm not saying that about any of you, but i don't know why there are maniacs at large who always appear when such a discussion starts, then you can't make them go away, insults fly, somebody mentions Hitler and Henrik closes the thread

Or please do it in another thread.

This section contains what is for me the saddest casualty of the list. "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" is a track I first learned about from its high placing in the `05 poll and was quick to become a favorite. A drop-off is natural for such an unacclaimed track, but it's sad to see it this low. For anybody that hasn't heard this beautiful track, check it out here.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

The first song to garner 10 votes (as far as I can tell). Let's see which is the first to get 15 votes.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

I would like to note the real lack of 50s early Rock and Roll in this list so far. Maybe its just because I've been relistening to my Time Life collections, but there are alot of great songs that I should of put on my list. I know this is a bad example because it is an instrumental with a Hawaiian thing, but "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny is a song that everyone here probably knows but does not know the name. I left it off my list. Not do mention all the doo-wop groups like The Cadillacs, The Diamonds, or The Midnighters.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

I'm noticing a lot of these songs did not rank in the previous polls.

This is an interesting observation and I wonder how a song that is 44 years old, such as:

[361] The Beatles – Got To Get You Into My Life
[1966] Revolver
[1016.0 Points, 5 Votes, 203 Pts./Vote]
Other Placements:
2005: N/A
2008: N/A
AM 3000: N/A

Fans: 42david42 (23), Sven (42)

moves from nowhere up to 361.

My conjecture is that a key contributing factor is that there are different folks in this poll (such as myself) that did not participate in the earlier polls that are more disposed to vote for this song (and others similarly situated), than those who participated in the earlier polls.

I think that is almost certainly true - the cohort of submitters changes pretty drastically, with one core group consistent across.

At least it makes for more unpredictable results!

"Warszawa" was a late riser for me. I didn't have it included in my list until the last week or two (it placed around 250), but I expect it to only go up next time around.

Many probably find this song boring (as well as the rest of the instrumental side of Low), but I find it to be an incredibly elegant, epic composition. Those who dislike it or haven't given it a chance should give it some good listens and see if their opinion changes.

Agreed 100% on "Warszawa" -- my favorite Bowie song these days. (Though my appreciation of Eno over the last few years has likely enhanced this.)

Also, totally unrelated, but 3 cheers for "Paint America Love" getting back in the 500!

Some are missing because Rhapsody doesn't have rights to the artist. Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, Bruce Springsteen and Metallica are all going to be missing. But, 80-90 percent of the songs will be here. Anybody can listen to 25 songs on Rhapsody, you need a subscription to listen to more. I have it on my iPhone, so that's why I'm compiling it on Rhapsody.

If you do happen to subscribe, a user named Spysquirrel has 15 playlists posted you might be interested in.

AM 3000

By the way, this is US only... sorry. Maybe somebody can make a Spotify list for non-US AM'ers? We don't have access to Spotify in the US.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

John- This is great... thanks for putting these lists together.
Are Rhapsody and Spotify pretty much the same thing (just different regions with slightly different usability)?

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

Pretty much. Rhapsody has a huge library though, much larger than Spotify I think. But you do have to pay a fee for it. $12.99 for computer streaming per month, $14.99 for Rhapsody to Go which streams on portable devices like the iPhone.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

I'm one of the aforementioned folks who are first timers, and I'm sure I've contributed my fair share to some of the random results of the poll. I'm having a great time comparing my favs to the more sophisticated fans in this forum, and uncovering and re-discovering songs I didn't know about or had forgotten about.

I'm know I'm late to this thread, but regarding a few previous conversations...
Yeah, I was the guy who voted Jason Mraz #9. I realize it may not have staying power, but how can you tell until you're 10-20 years down the road? I like to believe that just because a song is popular doesn't mean that it ISN'T good.

I will also grant that my musical experience/tastes are way more mainstream than most people here, and I accept that. :)

However, in my defense, I'm an 80s guy, and even I didn't vote for Bette Davis Eyes, Take On Me, or Time After Time. Great songs, but I've heard them so many times that I never seek them out. One of my main criteria in compiling my list was "how many times in the past year have I actively sought out this song?" - as opposed to happening across it in a random music session, or even stuck in a playlist with other songs I like more.

Anyway, thanks for putting up with me. :)

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

I've been keeping track of where my picks end up in the final tally...

1000-501: 30
500-361: 9

Anyone else keeping track?

Thanks to Jackson for compiling this data...love the detailed format for top 500. Looking forward to seeing the master list...and thanks to everyone posting links from rhapsody, youtube etc!

I'm surprised to see In The Ghetto so high. I think that's the song Public Enemy was talking about.

Hey Jackson, what constitutes a fan? Top fifth of your ballot? Because there are a bunch of songs I know I put pretty high and am not listed as a fan.

I'm surprised no one's asked that yet. At this point of the list, it's a top 50 placement (or if there is none, whoever placed it the highest). At some point, I'll switch to top 20.

16. Entertaining Angels
110. The Orphan
178. Where You Belong/Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
250. Forever Man
400. Beautiful Sound
432. Lost the Plot

Some other CCM picks I included in my top 500:
213. dc Talk - Colored People
232. dc Talk - Day by Day
294. TobyMac - Made to Love
307. dc Talk - Between You and Me
422. Jars of Clay - Liquid
430. dc Talk - In the Light
460. dc Talk - What If I Stumble?

What CCM songs did you all include? I'm trying to get into more music (I only know a little Petra, but I enjoy what I've heard), but I would like to get into more CCM music.

I'm glad Moondance placed. Even though I didn't vote for it, that one should always be up there.

Nice debut for "Since I Left You," one of the most joyous tracks ever put to record.

The Beach Boys cleaned up in this section, with three selections, including one that surprised me (I didn't know Sloop John B was this liked). I wouldn't have minded if Til I Die placed top 100 like it did last time, but post-Good Vibrations Beach Boys votes went another way.

Fred - I am not sure, but I guess that you are even more disappointed than I am that this song only received 4 votes (less than 10%). It should be in the AM top 3000 in my opinion. I rated it at 167, but probably should have placed it higher.

What CCM songs did you all include? I'm trying to get into more music (I only know a little Petra, but I enjoy what I've heard), but I would like to get into more CCM music.

Daniel,

300 Sarah Masen - Kissing Tree
301 Newsboys - Breathe
314 Brooke Fraser - Shadowfeet

Some highlights...
Heavy on 1990s CCM, not too much from the last decade.

Pop/Rock
-- I love Geoff Moore & the Distance, as evidenced by the 8 entries
-- Rich Mullins is one of the greatest musicians CCM has ever produced. Sadly, like Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, and many others, he died tragically before his time

"Alternative"
-- Burlap to Cashmere
-- Vigilantes of Love
-- sixpence none the richer (pre-"Kiss Me")
-- Steve Taylor
-- plumb

Unplugged
-- Jennifer Knapp

Punk
-- MxPx (esp. albums Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo, The Ever Passing Moment)

Other great albums:
-- Jennifer Knapp, Kansas
-- Jars of Clay, Jars of Clay
-- Switchfoot, Beautiful Letdown
-- Newsboys, going public
-- Sarah Masen, Sarah Masen
-- dc Talk, Jesus Freak
-- Burlap to Cashmere, Anybody Out There?
-- Steve Taylor, Squint
-- Third Day, Third Day

I could have listed lots more Geoff Moore, dc Talk and Newsboys, but I tried to keep it to a reasonable number. :)

Other favorite CCM artists of yours?

I love "In The Ghetto"! My favorite Elvis song, at #77. This song taught me compassion at a very young age (ok, a bit of a stretch to give it that much credit, but it helped). This one's all about the lyrics for me, but the music is appropriately somber.

In the next AM poll, in the next...maybe even more shocking was Deacon Blues at no. 350...possibly their "greatest" song together with "Do It Again" which I don't hold too high.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

Deacon Blues is fantastic.

But, I prefer Reelin' In the Years, Kid Charlemagne, Caves of Altimira, Don't Take me Alive, Doctor Wu, and My Old School.

I can see why you prefer Deacon Blues over Do It Again.

Plenty of great Steely Dan songs to enjoy.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

I never liked Steely Dan before this year but I've really opened up to them over the past few months.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

This next group contains some of my favorite results of the poll. "Shangri-La" and "Modes D, E, and F..." show that you don't need poplarity or lots of votes to make an impact in the poll. I hope songs like that can win over more people because of their high placement and do even better next time.

Don Henley had a decent body of work post-Eagles, but for some reason this song far outlived the rest. Possibly because the baseball reference caused the song to be adopted by some Major League Baseball teams for stadium music. At any rate, I much prefer The End of the Innocence, The Heart of the Matter, and All She Wants to Do is Dance (which taught me what a Molotov Cocktail was).

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

The song just evokes such strong emotions for me, even though it's hard to really say why. Lost love and sadness but also optimism and somehow a feeling of summer even during winter. To me this would be the perfect soundtrack to driving a convertible along the boulevard (perhaps with the girlfriend/fiancee/wife/mistress). The song always cheers me up.

Henry
Deacon Blues is fantastic.

But, I prefer Reelin' In the Years, Kid Charlemagne, Caves of Altimira, Don't Take me Alive, Doctor Wu, and My Old School.

I can see why you prefer Deacon Blues over Do It Again.

Plenty of great Steely Dan songs to enjoy.

Plus it's hard to find fillers on a Steely Dan album! One of my strongest musical experiences was listening to the second side of "Pretzel Logic" when I was 24. Especially the medley of With a Gun, Charlie Freak and Monkey in Your Soul.

I didn't find much filler on their albums prior to 1985. I found some songs that I didn't care for on the Royal Scam album, especially "Everything You Did" - but perhaps others enjoy that song.

Other songs which I consider less noteworthy include: The Royal Scam (this song has some good moments) and Daddy Don't Live in that NYC No More,

Whew! Ended a bit of a drought there (from #330 Everybody Hurts to #294) with my highest ranking Beatles tune (#87). Also, I must say that seeing the "Air Band" episode of TV sitcom "Scrubs" gave me a whole new level of appreciation for "More Than A Feeling".

And I apologize for those I offend, but "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" gets my vote for most pretentious album title ever. :) The only thing good about Smashing Pumpkins, IMHO, is that you can then make pumpkin pie. Not a fan (ducks)

Don't know how that got left out. Oh well...

1174.6 Points, 7 Votes, 168 Pts./Vote. You and Stone (58) were the only ones that had it in the top 100. For the record, Otis Redding is currently on my short lists of artists I really need an album by (all I have is "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay," my number 33 song).

Oh, and also, "All Apologies" should have 1141.7 points, I had a typo on that one.

Just like Rhapsody I couldn't find eg the beatles, so that's like 50 gone :D

More to come...
Also, some big hits went early on, like Outkast's Roses, Umbrella by Rihanna and a couple of NMHs (which has now lost all of it tracks).
Oh yeah another thing, what's CCM?

Yeah, it should be much, much higher.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist : the real highlight of Since I Left You for me, base on a wacky idea but ending so irresistable it's almost ridiculous, so I'm pretty happy it beats the title song

Radiohead - Let Down : for me it still is one of the weakest song of OK Computer (not that anything really is weak on this album) so I did not get the ranking of last poll, I'm glad it is back to a more "normal" position. On the other hand I'm deceived Jesus, Etc lost that much places.

Spotify List -

1000-901

900-801
Just like Rhapsody I couldn't find eg the beatles, so that's like 50 gone :D

More to come...
Also, some big hits went early on, like Outkast's Roses, Umbrella by Rihanna and a couple of NMHs (which has now lost all of it tracks).
Oh yeah another thing, what's CCM?

CCM = Christian Contemporary Music, often used generally to refer to any modern (Rock Era?) music with Christian thematic elements, other than gospel music.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

240-221: great set! I'd forgotten about Elton John's "Your Song"...might have voted for that one if I'd gotten my list up to 500.

231: Solisbury Hill - love this song...surprised it isn't a bit higher in the all-time list. Took a big leap forward from the 2008 list, and once again Daniel, we're matching pretty closely!

So far, I'm at 46 entries in the top 1000, and 16 in the top 500. I'm curious what the average overlap between lists is, and it will be interesting to see the two most similar and two most dissimilar lists.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

Nick
interesting to see Dylan's version of Mr. Tambourine man place higher than The Byrd's version. I personally voted for both, but I placed the Dylan version around number 400, while The Byrd's version placed around number 115.

I preffer the Dylan version.

For me, 36 of my top 500 have placed between 501 and 1000 and another 23 have popped up since.

Re: 2010 AMF All-Time Songs Poll: Results

I have projected out that I have 25 remaining songs that will crack the top 220, based on the results I have seen so far (but not based on previous years' lists). Looking forward to seeing if there are any surprise entries...

Looking through my list, I think I'll have 20 songs remaining. I, too, would love some surprises!

More about "Can't Get You Out of My Head":

This song single-handedly resurrected my interest in current music, as I trudged through the 90s only listening to new music recorded by established favorites. I watched a lot of music videos, but nothing really grabbed me. Then I happened upon a video that had already started and was completely transfixed by the shimmering metallic skyline which served as a perfect backdrop for the hypnotic, chugging synth pulse and alluring vocal seduction. Not knowing who the performer was but seeing her hair, I thought, "Wow- Sheryl Crow just got really cool all of a sudden!" When the credits rolled, I saw that it was Kylie Minogue... Kylie Minogue?! The "Locomotion" girl? I was shocked, as I didn't like "Locomotion" at all, but this... this was so different! Ice cold synth pop/electro served up in a freezing neon blue tube in the studio- so perfect for the new millenium (or "Millenium fresh" as my brother and I would say at the time). I felt like I was seeing the future, much like Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" must have seemed to have given birth to a new era. And in a sense, I was correct, given the return of more synth-oriented, dance-oriented pop that would emerge.

I rushed out and bought Fever when it was released, and it was a perfect album for a road trip I took with a friend. Curious about the fact that someone who had performed such perfunctory, by-the-numbers bubblegum in the late 80s had suddenly released this cracking, forward-thinking single and whirlwind album, I asked about it on a Prince forum where I had just begun to post regularly. I was answered by a girl from Australia, who actually sent me a copy of one of Kylie's other albums (Impossible Princess). This girl would go on to become my wife, and the rest is history.

This section is amazing in my opinion. Plenty of great advances for great songs (how did some of these not place last time around?). I find it amusing that considering the minute level of separation between these songs, the two big TV on the Radio tracks ended up 2 points away from each other.

Yeah, it was a bad showing for Daft Punk overall. "Digital Love" should be an automatic top-200 placement, but it couldn't even crack top-400.

By the way, the top 200 begins within the next 24 hours. Once it starts, I promise it'll go quickly.

Here's a link to what's available on Rhapsody in the first 100. I'll keep updating.

Finally getting a chance to listen to songs on the top 1000 that I don't have yet. Thanks for providing the Rhapsody playlist.

I started with the Tindersticks tune and I'm working my way up the list. It's great to hear interesting and often excellent music that is new to me.

I am sure that there are many new gems for me to uncover.

I have listened to two versions of:

[626] The Replacements | Answering Machine | 1984

and still don't understand why this song rates in the top 1000. Please help me understand why some of you like this song.
