AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Good morning, afternoon, evening, night everyone.

The votes have been counted so it's time to release them. I'll use almost same presentation Nassim did in the 70's album poll (by the way where are you Nassim?).

You're among the biggest fans if you have given at least ten points to a certain album. So if you notice any mistakes (you're (not) among the fans when you should (not) been) please report immediately.

195 different albums got points. 31 forum members voted.
Like Nassim I also introduce the participants.

I guess there's no question which one I voted for among those four albums.
They are The Very Best so they need a bigger picture.
The size of the rest of the pictures will be same. So no more big pictures.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

No as big surprises as Black Lips or Built to Spill in this section. But there's still big stunners left in the list.

Is there a mistake here? If Brad gave the album 25 points and 2 other people voted for it, wouldn't it have a minimum of 35 points?

Not with the extended rule with lists of 20 albums.
I gave it 5 points (I think), so I guess someone likes it "just a little bit".

Nassim gave the album 5 points and Rocky Raccoon 1 point. There was a chance to give albums from positions 11 to 20 only 1 point (1-5 points).

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Too bad Wild Beasts didn't make the top 10 (incredibly close to both its AM and its MEGACRITIC ranking, by the way) but yay! for The Antlers making it.

Thanks Petri!

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Ah! Two Suns inside the top 20. I just love that record, there's something mystical and poisoning about that girl. I just love her. Nice to see Florence on the list. I thought Actor and Embryonic would make the top 20 & 10 respectively (they came so close!), and the list started with a few albums that i heard of, but never listening to and Annie inside the top 20! Things that i wasn't expecting, which makes the list even cooler, so far!

Yeah it's included. Sorry I didn't notice your forum username in the title of your mail so you've introduced as your first name.

Next one is a really big stunner.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

uhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Wait that Rock Elton bastard gave 35 points to Jonas Bros. That's prohibited. And who are these guys anyway. You didn't mention a single one in the first post.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I hope this is a fuckin joke! kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

For God Sake, all i can say is... REALLY?

It's funny & sad at the same time! kkkkkkkkkkkkk

I'm confused!

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Love the reference to my old nickname as well as keeping the tradition alive that started with.. Anthony's New Kids On The Block I think? Good times.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

très bon

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

OK that was funny. By the way I guess Stephan's nickname was the hardest to recognize. All the rest are easy ones if you have been in this forum over a year.

Back to list.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

nicolas you're full of surprise ! I didn't expect you giving 18 pts to Raekwon.

But I love rap. The thing is I don't listen to a lot of post-1975 music, that's all, but rap has the energy and emotional delivery of early rock and soul.

It's a great Wu Tang album, it's full of energy, good lyrics (even if I didn't understand everything), great vocal performances. It's my number 2 of the year.

To me a good rap album is worth 5 indie-rock acclaimed albums, especially this year when I don't like any of the best acclaimed albums : Animal C, Yeah yeah yeahs, XX got 2 or 2.5 ratings at chez nicolas. Grizzly Bear is Ok but out of my top 10. Same for Fever Ray.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Yes, these jokes are almost obligatory in our polls! BTW, wasn't Stephan's old nickname "Neoptolemos"? I still didn't recognize the mention to it there.

Great to see Hold Time in the list, it would have been at least my 3rd highest vote if I had participated. That album is wonderful, specially those first six tracks!

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Stephan
Too bad Wild Beasts didn't make the top 10 (incredibly close to both its AM and its MEGACRITIC ranking, by the way) but yay! for The Antlers making it.

Thanks Petri!

I'm actually thinking the Antlers might have placed quite high, just because it seems the fans of this album are BIG fans (me included).

Toni

Yes, these jokes are almost obligatory in our polls! BTW, wasn't Stephan's old nickname "Neoptolemos"? I still didn't recognize the mention to it there.

Neoptolemus aka Pyrrhus

There's neither #8 nor #7. So we have three albums at #6.

Notes: There were only two albums which were in peak position during the poll. Hospice was the first one.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

wow, needless to say I'm a little shocked at this three way tie for 6th place. Anyways, we have five albums left for the top ten- anyone want to guess on their order?

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Aw, I had The Antlers at 25 points originally but I didn't want the bottom four all at 5 points. Oh well, even shared it's an excellent rank.

Nick
wow, needless to say I'm a little shocked at this three way tie for 6th place. Anyways, we have three albums left for the top ten- anyone want to guess on their order?
Don't you mean 5 albums? I'll venture a guess:

5. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
4. Fever Ray - Fever Ray
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz
2. The xx - xx
1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

We have still one tie left. Before the last posters the only tie was at #25 with Very Best and M. Ward. And then suddenly there were lots of ties especially in the top 10.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

oh damn, you're right. Once again, I fail to use basic reasoning. Hmmm I'd say

5. Fever Ray- Fever Ray
4. It's Blitz!- Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3. Bitte Orca- Dirty Projectors
2. xx- The xx
1. Merriweather Post Pavilion- Animal Collective

So cool the 6th position tie, and It's Blitz! inside the top 5 & Fever Ray inside the top 3 that's AWESOME!! What is next the xx placed higher than MPP?

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Does anyone want to guess the scores of XX and Animal Collective or do I release the results?

Edit: Fever Ray was in one point only two points behind the winner. So there might be a chance to a big surprise.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

OK, looks like it's time to release the top 2. Thanks for all who participated and/or commented. I'll release the individual lists tomorrow.
And here they are...

Great job Petri, top notch presentation as usual.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Yes, Petri, excellent job.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

That was great. I wish 2010 was gone so we could do another one of these. I really loved the xx's xx, nice to see others just love it as much as i, and sometimes even more! After knowing that at some point fever ray was 2 points behind of the winner, i thought "wow, maybe that album topped MPP", but no, last year was AC's year, and deservedly, it's a great band and a great album, and like i said when people were discussing that top 20xtop 10 stuff, i just loved the #1 album as much as the ones that were out of the top 20, it was hard to pick! kkkkkkkkk I still haven't listen to some albums of the list, so i'll sure check them out, and i guess the individual lists will contain even more new albums, and i'll sure check them out too. I guess the point of the poll is not top it, or win it, or finish inside the top 10, it's get to know other people tastes, how they feel about it, have fun (like the jonas joke that almost gave a heart attack at first), and discover new music, which is something i'm sure doing! Thanks to everyone who participate and made that possible, especially you Petri, who coordinate all that. And i can't wait for the next album poll, and the results of the 50's one, and i want to participate of the 60's too! So many things to do and listen to

Way to go Charlie! Only album to make it on with two votes

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Dammit, I didn't realize the deadline for this had passed already. Oh, well. For the record, I would have picked xx as my #1 album, which still would have kept it in second place. MPP would have been either #2 or 3, depending on where I ranked BITTE ORCA.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Great to see MPP far ahead of the others. 2009 will always be musically remembered as the Animal Collective year. This year was quite like 96: weak for albums, but with one strong classic to dominate it all the way!
I wish Wilco had entered the list. That is a great disc, underrated for coming from a band whose best period is already behind them.
And I must say I like seeing Grizzly Bear "only" at 6th. That's one of the most tedious records I heard last year, even if containing one of the two best 09's songs.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

great finish for prefab sprout! (high five honorio...dumbangel, we could've used your help!)

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Awesome job, Petri!

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Yes, dumbangel, Prefab Sprout could have entered the Top 20 with your votes

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

ok, sorry to play the wet blanket, but can someone explain me what 's so great with the XX ?

To me this records sounds like

1) the boy and the girl try to beat the world record of the most unexpressive vocals of all time

2) with his guitar, the boy tries every effect that's been recorded between 1981 and 1989 (except of course in hair metal)

3) stripped of their production, there's nothing left of the songs.

Honorio ? anyone ?

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

while I do like the XX, and yes, I did put them on my annual top ten list (at number 9) I also feel that they are way overhyped/ overrated. I mean, second greatest album of the year? come on...it's a good album, but not a masterpiece.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

It's definitely not a masterpiece, but then again, nothing this year was. It was an okay year, but there were no real classics (MPP might be for some, but I somewhat hope it'll face some backlash in the next few years) although for me Hospice comes close.

That said, I think xx is the third-best album of the year because it sounds friggin good. I don't hear the "unexpressive", I just hear a bunch of excellent pop songs.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I don't even remember voting in this...show's how many lists I've been doing lately.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Your personal list also doesn't show up, so maybe you didn't..

That's true. I guess everything matches in that record: the vocals, the lyrics, the playing. It's sounds terrific in my opinion. I thought that in 3 weeks i would get sick of it but it's the album released in 2009 that i listen the most right now, it's truly my second personal favorite from start to finish. Everybody was doing something and thinking Big in 2009: big productions, big synths, big harmonies, big experiments. xx was a simple record, they did genius pop songs and that's it. It could've been more sophisticated like Veckatimest or have a bigger production like It's Blitz, Merriweather & Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, big harmonies like Lungs or big concepts like Two Suns or big experiments like Bitte Orca, Fever Ray & Embryonic, but no. They only did simple catchy timeless pop songs, and that was enough to make them Big and my second favorite 2009 record. Everything was simple and worked, and it was very expressive. It was a breath of fresh air when i listened for the first time, i guess music critics and others agree. They were not ambitious, and it worked. Ioved all the other albums i cited, but you know sometimes all you need is a guitar, a keyboard & two vocalists to make magic

Ouch catched. I made up half of the voters to help XX and rest of my favorites.
No seriously it's Jonathan not Jonathon and it should be VanillaFire1000.

Interesting to see which XX song(s) (if any) will get votes in the songs poll. For me The XX album is one dreamlike flow and it's hard to pick any songs. The songs are also very similar but in this case it's very good thing.
I'm also wondering how long the magic of the album will last (in a way it's way too easy listening album). But after 6 months it's still sounds good.

Couldn't agree more - 2009 just wasn't a great year (but "Hospice" is a great album). Love your personal list, by the way; we seem to have pretty similar tastes in music.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Indeed we do, and listening to Passion Pit again, which was just outside my top 10, I think I'll move it up into the top 10 along with The Low Anthem.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

"Broadcast And The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults Of The Radio Age" in sonni's and me lists only? tss/tss, for shame, Charlie Demme and Mindrocker, for shame..

belated kneel down @pop petri; that notjedi monicker is simply jadesome..

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

nicolas, I'll bite on xx. I actually adore the vocals. These kids are like 20 years old or something, and it sounds like they've just discovered love for the first time and are confessing it in a hush as if it's some sacred secret. The minimal instrumentation just adds to the vulnerability, and I find it rather disarming. I think this song encapsulates what I'm talking about best:

That guitar solo that ends the song is just gorgeous!

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I just love Basic Space!! After the first 5 tracks, i thought "this can't get better", i was wrong, the rest is just equally terrific. Even the You've Got The Love remix they made with Florence + The Machine is awesome.

Different strokes for different folks. I thought this was an incredible year for music, and I would take the collected T20 of this year over any other year this past decade except for 2000 and 2007. Also, I doubt classic status will be withheld from MPP; if Is This It can endure, certainly MPP can.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

About the XX, I guess it's a question of genre and esthetics. I just can't stand the idea of a group that willingly calls themselves the XX.

I get your point about "simple" pop songs, but they sound way too clean, unspontaneous and terribly 80's cold-wave-post-punk to me. The guitar sounds, the vocal styles (aesthetics choices), their use of machines, the black and grey cover art, all these things don't appeal to me at all.

I guess the same would happen if you asked Moonbeam to review the Levon Helm album

And i do hope you don't find my comments about some indie music offensive or judgmental, because that's not my intention. Not at all.

PS : like Stephan, I don't consider 2009 as a good year. Too experimental, too much technology. 2009 was the 1981 of the 2000s.

2008 was great to me (Fleet Foxes, Drive By Truckers, Hold Steady, Diabaté, The Tallest Man On Earth, Ron Sexsmith, Femi Kuti....), but I heard more records in general that year. In 2009 sometimes I think I just didn't get the right ones.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I would regard 2009 as a good musical year, not an astonishing one for sure but with tons of good album.
I would rank my favourite album of 2009 at the same level as the one of 2008, but my top 20 of 2009 looks much better (I'm not even sure to be able to make a decent top 20 of 2008).

So sure, it lacks a really great album (for this decade, only in 2001 wasn't there an album I like more than Fever Ray for 2009 and the Dodos for 2008), but there really was a lot to love. The only major issue is that there only has been one great rap album and it sounds totally 90s (which in that case is a great thing).

1981 was great!

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I do think there were a lot of just very solid albums this year, and I agree that it's probably easier to come up with 20 good albums this year than it would be for 2008, but that doesn't make it a great year. That said, I don't think 2008 was that great either.

By the way, for me the crown for worst year of the decade goes to 2003—easily.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Stephan

By the way, for me the crown for worst year of the decade goes to 2003—easily.

2003 was definitely the worst album year of the decade (3 or 4 albums in the decade top 100). But paradoxically it was maybe the best year in songs.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I really liked 2009. People experimented more, everything sounded so unique. Not only unique in comparison to other bands in other years (although we can all cite influences), but comparing them among themselves, they all sound different. There was a bunch of great albums, and i guess is sad that in the future people will only remember it as the Animal Collective year, since i've heard other terrific albums this year and it would be cool if they received credit too. It's weird, cause every album that i listened from 2009 doesn't sound out of time, it looks like 2009 was the only year they could have been released, they fit this year very well. We had everything this year: Simple, Big, Experimentation, Sophisticated, Synths, Indie Pop, Indie Rock, Psychedelic, etc. 2009 was a very diverse and a great year, even if in a near future people will only talk about Animal Collective ruling it.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I loved 2009- definitely the best of the later half of the 00's. I disagree that it was experimental because in my opinion that was the past three years, and this year that sound merged with a more accessible classic indie rock sound.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

2009 - Meh. I liked 2008 better (though it wasn't great) and I think 2007 was the best year of this half of the decade. No particular year of this decade stands out way above the others IMO, though if I had to pick one it would be '01 I guess.

2010 - From what I can tell now, it looks like it's gonna be awesome. The lineup of artists releasing albums is just stacked.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I really liked 09, there were a lot of good albums and I think I think that cause I have more 09 albums than any other year in the 00s. I thought 08 was rather weak, 07 was maybe the best and I think 05 is way underrated.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

Moonbeam

1981 was great!

hey!! that was me who copyrighted that line... but you said it you paid it... nine ckuffin billion euros to this very day!

(just ask my last big opponent who still has to endure a "damnnn... i did mess with nj so that's why i'm now/still/again living in a ColecoVision cartridge so far" brick career.. 2 years later, he's most probably dishwashing some muller's lingerie rite now..)

tee hee, ooooh, the hubris..

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

can someone explain me what 's so great with the XX ?

Honorio ? anyone ?

Sorry for the delay of the answer, Nicolas.
Well, my initial list on the first week of January included The Flaming Lips’ “Embryonic” and Madness’ “The Liberty of Norton Folgate” too. So when I was going to send it to Petri I though: “Aaargh, a list from a forty-something filled with forty-something artists!!”. Paddy McAloon (52), M. Ward (35), Antony Hegarty (38), David Sylvian (51), Vic Chesnutt (44), Jeff Tweedy (42), Wayne Coyne (48) or Suggs McPherson (48) were part of the initial (elderly) line-up.
Realizing that I was losing my edge (paraphrasing James Murphy), I went looking for young blood and I did the listening that I should’ve done during 2009 (I was into the 70s during 2009, you know why). Firmly decided to not believe the hype, I’ve listened to some good albums that didn’t make the cut into my list. “The Pains of Being Pure at Heart” or “Don’t Stop” were serious candidates while others like “It’s Blitz”, “Album”, “Bite Orca” or “Two Dancers” never had a real chance for me. Finally “Veckatimest” clicked on me and displaced Madness but the biggest surprise for me was the xxs debut album that finally reached the #3 on my list.
I couldn’t describe it better that Moonbeam (well, no one could): "it sounds like they've just discovered love for the first time and are confessing it in a hush as if it's some sacred secret”. I don’t find the vocals unexpressive too, in fact I find specially Romy’s voice mesmerizing and infused by (yes, Moonbeam again) vulnerability. And they succeeded in evoking so precisely the 4AD 80s flavour with the minimum amount of ornaments, creating an almost narcotic ambiance that creates a new style (synth-bedroom music maybe?) and it’s completely addictive. At least for me.
About the cyclic discussion of every end of year, I’ve never said that any given year was a bad year for music (and I never will). Of course there are years better than others but all I can say is that the music acclaimed by the critics is better or worse (in that aspect it seems that 2009 was not a good year, in other words the indie-rock harvest was worse than other years). But I give as a fact that there are so many music out there of so many different styles that I haven’t listened that probably they are always unknown masterpieces waiting to be discovered.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

09 was easily one of the best years of the decade especially with the revival shoegaze and dreampop which you see throughout the top 50 albums of the year. Any year that gives us shoegaze in favor of synthpop is a terrific year in my opinion. Au Revoir 80s revivalists, long live noise.

Re: AMF Poll: Favourite albums of 2009: RESULTS

I regret not to have taken part in this poll.
Prefab Sprout was my #1 for 2009, so the album would have finished in the top 20...
I'm sorry Honorio...
