14 Beach Boys - Smiley Smile
#1841, 1967, def 3 The Beatles - Let It Be
vs
11 Ennio Morricone - Once Upon A Time In The West
#2851, 1968, def 6 Chuck Berry - Chuck Berry Is On Top
This could be an interesting matchup. Two generally ignored albums with a lot of big fans on this board.
Division 3:
2 Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues
#1387, 1983, def 15 They Might Be Giants - They Might Be Giants
vs
10 Madonna - Madonna
#1303, 1983, def 7 REM - Fables of the Reconstruction
Two 1983 albums very close in the AM rankings, one of which came later than all the act's most famous albums, and one of which came before.
Division 5:
1 Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
#512, 1998, def 16 Boredoms - Super AE
vs
8 Ben Folds Five - Whatever And Ever Amen
#2320, 1997, def 9 Pavement - Terror Twighlight
The obvious favorite to win the tournament against an album with a lot of fans on this board.
Division 7
4 Gorillaz - Demon Days
#866, 2006, def 13 Drive By Truckers - Decoration Day
vs
5 Spoon - Gimme Fiction
#1903, 2005, def 12 The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives
Spoon's last album in the tournament vs an album that fared very well in the AMF poll. But as history has shown doing well in the AMF poll doesn't necessarily mean you'll do well here.
Voting stays open one week and closes midnight board time on Tuesday.

Moonbeam
I can finally vote for one of these!
Madonna's self-titled gets my vote over Speaking in Tongues, although I absolutely adore both.
i literally felt your inner vader vs ani battle trembling inside this division..
edit: and thanks dog i logged out just on time.. smiley smile vs ouatitw... that's just too much guilty driven havoc vs cold blooded aesthetical supremacy on my behalf... nah, but, nah, kcuf uoy, syug.. mi ffo
Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 5

2 Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues
1 Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
4 Gorillaz - Demon Days

5 Spoon - Gimme Fiction
I was pretty divided! Who should i pick ? Gorillaz or Spoon ? I'm picking Spoon's Gimme Fiction cause i'm pretty sure most of the people out there will pick "Demon Days", which is one of the best releases of this decade. I didn't pick Gimme Fiction only because of that. The album is a kinda like a base for everything spoon did later, all the latter albums owe this little masterpiece and also cause is a very strong record. I absolute adore both records, and i guess the Gimme Fiction is more underrated than Demon Days (which is also very underrated). You guys should add Laura Nyro next round or week or game. That was a very underrated moderately critically acclaimed woman! Lot of love for this woman.

Qualifying was done earlier in the year, and from each block of 100 from 501-3000 on the AM list, five albums were nominated, plus three wild cards. The complete draw of the elimination round can be found here: http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=329857&tclass=
Laura Nyro didn't make the draw, but she's certainly on my list of stuff to check out.
All four matchups are very close for me this week. I may have to re-listen to all eight just to decide.

That;s too bad, but you checking her out is already enough and a great thing! =]
Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 5
ENNIO MORRICONE “Once Upon a Time in the West”
The second time I don’t vote for “Smiley Smile” (and that’s an album I love). It’s getting bad luck with the pairings, this time the masterpiece of atmosphere from maestro Morricone.
TA LKI N GHE ADS “SP EAK IN GI N TO NGU ES”
So sorry Her Madgesty (quoting your best fan ever) but my vote goes to “Speak in Gin Tongues”.
NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL “In the Aeroplane over the Sea”
Mainstream (but only in AM Forum terms).
SPOON “Gimme Fiction”
I’ve always been a sucker for good pop-rock, indie or not.
Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 5
My only votes this week go to Talking Heads and NMH.
Maybe I'm a bit too hard on NMH because of how high they get rated. It's a perfectly good album, but come on, among the best of all time? The songs come off to me like the idle ruminations of a life experience impoverished suburban teen, and the guitar strumming could be replicated after about three months' lessons. But in this matchup, it still wins on it's catchy melodies.
Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 5
I missed last week... I didn't think I got my last minute reminder from you? That's OK.
Division 1:
14 Beach Boys - Smiley Smile
Division 3:
2 Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues
Division 5:
1 Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Division 7
NO VOTE
I've listened to only 1-2 songs from each of these albums and those songs add up to a dead even matchup. If you had both of these bands earlier albums in this matchup, I'd probably give the edge to Gorillaz.
Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 5
Winners
14 Beach Boys - Smiley Smile
2 Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues
1 Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
5 Spoon - Gimme Fiction
The first band that started with three albums to be completely knocked out is Spoon. Our favorite cartoon band go on to face The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike in what will probably be a very close vote.
Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 5
I didn't mean the weakest in terms of my personal opinion, so much as in terms of lack of 'powerhouse' albums. Division 8 has Silent Shout. Division 7 is the only one that might be weaker than 1 just in terms of laying odds that the winner will come from that division.

You know how I feel about Comme a la Radio.
I'm not so sure. I think the older albums initially got fewer points because fewer people had heard them, but in this tournament part of the game I think that several people will fight hard for them.

I agree. Same votes from me.
I'm with these guys.
Edit: Even though I'm too late and they all already won. Figures, I participate in a game and I'm too late.
